This Film is still one of the "go to films" when work becomes stressful.Everything will be OK in the end . Mark Kermode's review is spot on.

The action scenes in this film were so well done it almost makes me wish there had been more, but I know it wasn't the point. Those truck mounted steadycam tracking shots on the freeway are just beautiful.

For some reason this film has not been grabbing my attention compared to all the quality titles we have now in awards season. But I´m interested now. Mark is one of the most reliable critics out there. I agree with him 90% of the time.

Just finished watching it, couldn't agree with you more. Really enjoyed this film. It relied more on character, script and atmosphere then pure action, very commendable.

The "leaking container" scene was amazing. How the main character keeps his cool while the worst monstrosity happens in front of him.

Other than Birdman, Enemy and Whiplash (which I was lucky enough to have seen last year) this is my favourite film of the year so far. I saw Ex Machina too this week and enjoyed it, but nowhere nearly as much as this film. Chandor impresses with every step he takes. Along with his performance as Llewyn Davis, Isaac is transforming into one of the most exciting male actors of his generation (Chastain already confirmed that with The Tree Of Life, Take Shelter and Zero Dark Thirty). Exciting to see them both together, and I do hope to see them work together at least once again. Brilliant supporting cast including David Oyelowo, Albert Brooks, and a possible stealth-comeback for Alessandro Nivola (who's also in the upcoming Selma alongside Oyelowo). The most mature film from Chandor to date, and a great change of pace from the usual affair this genre seems to encourage. This is the kind of post-noir auteurs like Lumet and Frankenheimer would be proud of, and somehow avoids having that pulpy self-awareness about it (popular in the 90's and early 00's), nor does it overdo the period setting. Just the right amount of style, and plenty of substance. Possibly my favourite reluctant criminal story since Scorsese's Casino.

It would have been better with snappy film noir pacing. You could cut a half hour by trimming scenes where people are driving alone and nothing happens, or staring into space. That said, Oscar, Jessica, and the supporting actors are fantastic.

This is one of those movies where “nothing happens” is the point of the movie.

I rate this close to what I felt when i saw The Insider. I thought that film was going to be a lot different to what it turned out to be. A Most Violent Year was much better in my view than The Insider though harbouring a general feeling of being very much a voyeur to the inner workings of the subject matter. Also, crucially for me, a lot less boring than The Insider.

I really liked this but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone simply because you need patience and not much really happens. If it wasn't for the two leads maybe I wouldn't like it.

I think that was intentional and to act as a red herring. We expect him to resort to violence and be like every stereotypical gangster in what was expected to be a stereotypical gangster film. But he managed to stay clean and legitimate. Even though his work and home environment compelled him to do it.

This film has been hyped beyond, which has spoiled what is otherwise a good movie. The title of the film and the endless stories about how violent that year was has done everyone involved in the film a disservice. Some strong acting especially by Jessica and Oscar make the weak storyline bearable for me. Jessica is mesmerising as the Tough Cookie who will defend her Family till it hurts. Oscar's portrayal of a Hispanic who is not a Criminal or a Pauper is refreshing to say the least. Preferred him in Ex Machina where he and his dancing were incredible. Enjoy.
@coolman9499 жыл бұрын
Let me start off by saying this is a damn good movie. However it does mislead the audience in the sense that when you read the title, A Most Violent Year, you expect it to be a film reminiscent of the Godfather or more recently, The Drop. In the trailer you are given the idea that Oscar Isaac's character is the head of a mafia family who is feuding with the head of another family or common street thugs, whoever that enemy might be. But what you get is a story more centered on the dynamic between he and Jessica Chastain's character
@PauLtus_B8 жыл бұрын
Is that misleading? I bet the trailers are but I suppose people should try to get some better judgement. Or even better: get a bit more open minded.

The title of the movie and the story are disconnected. The movie is boring and aside from Jessica Chastain the acting is average.

One of the most disappointing cinema experiences I've ever had. I can not understand the positive reviews for this film. I was looking forward to it so much and it is painfully boring. Every time you think the film is going to move into second gear it doesn't. I love the New York crime films of the 70s and I love that type of New York nostalgia but this a stink bomb. Avoid like the plague!

It was a breath of fresh air. The implication of violence rather than an explicit portrayal of violence made it much more engaging and ultimately more mature than your average drama-thriller. Possibly Chandor's best to date...I've liked all of this films so far.

Please tell me what movie has "use"? You didn't find it entertaining and I get that. All movies are useless though. Movies are people playing make believe in front of a camera for your entertainment.
