Great review. Loved the comment about sinking in a comfortable leather armchair. The film does have that high caliber of fantastic writing, cast, directing... It's quasi-perfect!

cinematic film... a lesson to all of the contemporary filmmakers who seem to think that cinema is just large-scale TV. the first couple of scenes alone are more cinematic than half of the golden globe nominees this year.

I thought it was wonderful. A great way of telling what is already a fascinating story. Maybe it was middle of the road, but that's fine as long as the characters and the storyline are engaging, and this certainly had all that.

Just watched it now, haven't before because didn't think it was my 'thing', after 2 minutes was hooked until the end Also never new it was co-written by the Cohen brothers (love 'em) or based on a true story, made it all the better, very pleasantly suprised!

Interesting: I loved The Lives of Others but disliked Schindler's List as "a gimmicky attempt at horror and genocide". I haven't seen it since it appeared on screen. I expect I should watch it again! It's well reviewed. Must give it another chance. Well aware I'll be screamed at. Go right ahead.

I watched this recently and fully agreed with Kermode's comments. It was a film I didn't fancy watching, but was so glad I did and felt greatly rewarded for doing so. Funny though how those clowns on Film 2015, primarily the guest member gave a very sniffy review. I'm old enough to remember when THAT show was as worth watching as much as the good doctors excellent reviews.

Terrific movie. Love the comic edge of it as well. The Coens are mostly responsible for that, but there's some witty editing choices which I found very interesting as well. Top class filmmaking, and the performances are perfect

I don't think the film is about the importance of the constitution or civil rights. That's only one scene. If Donovan had won the case, and defeated the show trial, then Abel would have been freed and the rest of the film wouldn't have happened at all. To me the film is actually more about the importance of sticking to your conscience even if you have to defy the people around you. It's not about what the cause is, or why you should stick to it. The film shows that the people around you don't necessarily know what they want.

I'm not sure if you guy have covered the topic, but could you explain a good way of getting over anxiety of going to the movies by yourself.

Before I started going to the movies by myself, I was so nervous and uneasy. We've all gone to countless movies with friends, family, and dates, won't it be super lonely and intimidating? In the past year, I have now gone to probably close to 100 films by myself, and I can tell you that, if you're a big fan of movies, it is an extremely relaxing, extremely rewarding way to spend a day treating yourself. And if you keep going to the same theater, it starts to feel like home.

Very Spielberg that Abel and Donovan are from two different worlds but they find commonality.
@rorybriggs31869 жыл бұрын
Although at times gripping and able to create a sense of pathos for the characters, the film could've done with more suspense, a greater sense of peril. It just felt too safe overall with only a smattering of flash points. For a director who made Jaws this was overall a little too comfy. The 'Would it help?' quip falls awkwardly flat after the first chuckle. Most importantly, however, the sinking into an 'armchair' description is bang on but for frustrating reasons. I wanted to be at the edge of my seat, not firmly sunken in.

Very good film. But hugely let down by an appalling soundtrack. Never has John Williams been missed more. Also, I found the optimistic ending immensely jarring, including Mark Rylance's "would it help?" uttered for a third, predictable time.

I personally felt this film was not to my taste. I went in expecting a nice meaty courtroom drama. Turned out it was something else entirely. Something bereft of any drama at all, really. This film is about a man who faces numerous obstacles that he needs to overcome in order to do the right thing. The problem is that each time he comes across an obstacle turns out all he has to do is simply ask someone to remove it for him! And for some reason they do it for him! Every single time! He does this over and over again throughout the film. It's ridiculous. If he can simply ask for whatever wants then there is nothing at stake. There is never any tension. I wish I had not wasted my money. And I wish I had instead sat at home watching a tin of beans heat up in a microwave. And because everyone knows you can't put metal things in a microwave, it would have at least provided more drama and more tension than the entirety of this very long and very boring film.

Saw it tonight, perfectly pleasant viewing but nothing more for me. Nothing particularly interesting or engaging, everything felt too perfectly lit, too glossy, and too manufactured.
@Zipacna1009 жыл бұрын
+Karl Karlos I'm sorry but for me a film based on a true cold war story shouldn't be lit in such a way that in every shot each actor has a perfect twinkle of light in their eyes. There is a glossy sheen over the whole film which makes the it feel completely unreal. I direct you to the most recent Kermode's Uncut blog where he talks about the great 'tactility' of 'This Filthy Earth', of how the recent Far From the Madding Crowd adaptation 'didn't feel dirty enough'. To me, this was exactly the problem with Bridge of Spies; it had zero grit.
@dantheman48389 жыл бұрын
This looks as unteresting as Lincoln. If Spielberg wants to make historical movies, I wish he wouldn't choose ones that center around people sitting around talking to each other. That is what historical documentaries do and they usually do it twice as good and in half the time.

Karl Karlos Mark Kermode said in this review that was what the movie was for the most part and Lincoln was a similar set up too. So that's why I said that. However you have said it was good, so has Mark, so maybe I should have reserved my judgement. My bad.
