Having heard this bass solo for years and seen it live many times I've always thought it was astronomically good. Now though I'm even more blown away by it as when played like this it seems even more ridiculous! And so fast! Awesome work.

Thanks James! I love this solo too and had been meaning to learn it for years. Finally got around to it - lots of fun!

I'm now trying to work out if you've based this on a particular live bass solo he's done or if you've combined a few together?! Obviously having gone back and watched a few of the classic ones it's clear there's a lot of improvisation every time he does one. I'm not sure- I have a few in mind- but I'd love to know if it's based on one in particular. This obviously isn't a criticism! Just me being a bit of a MK nerd!

It's based on the solo from 'The Antwerp Medley' from the Living It Up box set - to my mind, one of the best versions of this solo. Like you said, he changes the structure quite a lot each time, but usually with most of the same ingredients.

Thanks for your answer. The jam at the start of the Antwerp Medley has long been my favourite live Level 42 recording due to it's length, the fact that all the band join in and the wonderful, wonderful Alembic sound . Yep now I've listened to it you really nail the solo in The Chinese way. Total respect to your work- as good as it gets! @@StuartClayton

Looks like your bass have a very low action set up. Is that correct?
@StuartClayton

Yes, this bass has a low action, and I usually use it for slap/tap

Yeah, it's not one for a P-bass and a pick I'm afraid. Loads of cool things you can do with those though - just ask Carol Kaye, Bobby Vega etc...! I love playing with a pick.
