It's a bit strange really. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard "Sultans". I was 1978 and I was driving to work to do a night shift at Paddington fire station in London. The track and Knopfler's guitar blew me away so obviously I bought the album. When "Communique" came out I bought that as well, I loved it and had no complaints. I never understood why people criticised the music. But then "Making Movies" was released and I'll never forget the day I bought it, took it back to my girlfriend's flat and played it. From the very first note I just thought "Mark Knopfler's playing guitar again!" and I knew instantly why people had been less than delighted with Communique. For the record I still love that album.

I can listen to this man talk, endlessly. When he talks about a song and how he came to create and write it and them when it;s breaks away into the actual recording. OH MY FRIGGIN HEAD! Chills and amazement to see and hear it materialize like that! Good Gawd! how TASTY this is! Mark is truly a treasure to behold. We are ALL blessed to have him in our time, producing his music! God bless you Mark and keep you safe, healthy and happy! You can't be thanked enough

The world is a much better place not only for Mark Knopfler's creativity, skill, artistry & musical genius.......we must also be grateful that he was able to dial it all in and focus it without self destructing like many musical artists. As a funny aside, after traveling the world for 20 years making wildlife films (my ex a cinematographer and I the sound recordist/camera assistant and general minion), In 2001 I gutted & remodled a 100+ year old building and created a Bistro at the age of 45. I was a Chef/owner (which means non-stop work) every nite as my staff and I cleaned the kitchen and mopped the floors I played 'The Sultan's of Swing' with the volume cranked. It gave me that last energetic boost at the end of the night. My tiny staff never saw it like that.....hahaha! Though one nite a new dishwasher said, after the song ended. Wow! that guy can really play the guitar. Can we hear that again? I said.....you sure can! Then said, I think you're gonna fit in here really well! All these years later I always make sure I have lots of Mark's music in the car while moving about. When in doubt......pop in a MK CD.

Making Movies is one of the best albums ever made. It knocked me out when I first heard it in 1980. It's tough for a band to best their debut album but Mark did it.

Hi Mark, I am a fan of yours since 1979, I saw you twice live in Zagreb and Milan many years ago, I have been playing guitar for many years but I am still a beginner, I'm always trying to learn your Tunnel of Love solo, my favorite solo , but with many difficulties. I love you and I always follow you, you are the best among the guitarists I love the most.

A great narrator, excellent songwriter and an allround nice guy :-) I love the comment about the Junkyard!.....and the reference that everything has a price. Clever fellow! Mark is one of the few who, despite fame and fortune, has kept his feet firmly on the ground. I also hail from the Banks of the Tyne - I´ve been to the places he sings about in "Down to the Waterline" or "Tunnel of love" :-)

ELEKSON KURBAH it was seen that way back then by some of the critics, but as we know that opinion has changed within years and now it's regarded as its as great as Knopfler's debut

The narrator is John Illsley, the bass player for Dire Straits. He also produced Guitar Stories, chronicling some of Mark's favorite guitars. I'm quite certain he was aware of what the critics were saying at the time. Just goes to prove, those who can write songs, write songs. Those who can't...critique.

1978...hmm 23..yes around about then and before hanging around those old time pubs right there London S.E.8... Sultans...so vivid mentally then and always. Wonderful irony in the lyrics and so appealing to my consciousness. Now add in the amazing licks and the narrative vocals. Loved it then and always THANK YOU. Romeo and Juliet so wistful with those magic chords. Two desert island discs c'mon that's not fair sir. Respect to the late Charlie Gillett so ahead of his time. Some smart alec music snob might say Mark Knopfler "isn't such a great singer" just like elsewhere some squarehead compared Nina Simone detrimentally with Ella. Kind of missed the soul of the performance (From a little person)
