This is an edited version (due to copyright claims) of a great TV special released by Granada (ITV) around the time the 40th anniversary Fender Stratocaster was released circa 1994. MK's part is only 1 minute but this is a great docu about a great guitar.

Ive finally realized, its the Stratocaster for life. I have a 1972 American Stratocaster that sounds incredible and a recently acquired Fender blues Jr. Wow! The blues jr is such a fun amp.

It's amazing to think that thing's started off in a tiny place with three girls on the 'assembly line.' These early 50s bolt together Telecasters were conceived as a working musician's instrument, something that now changes hands for between 15/20 thousand dollars; a friend said to me, 'Leo was a big electronics fan. He'd be able to power the neighbourhood's lights now with all the spinning he does in his grave.'

My Les Paul gave me an achy back once after playing it for a long time on stage :) never changed guitars the whole time :) that guy stuck on me :) loved playing it and still do! but saying that, I was not in the best of health at the time

It's so damn sad, that Leo felt he had to sell out to CBS. I have several Fender Guitars, Strats, a Tele and even a P Bass, I also own a 1964 Pre CBS Strat. To me, it is priceless. Most Fender Guitars do, in fact, possess magic. Somehow, it's built in them, like Leo's Soul.

I read that Leo was diagnosed with cancer so decided to sell the company . After CBS bought him out , he was informed that the original diagnosis was in fact wrong , and it was a stomach virus he had , but by that time it was too late .

Eric Clapton was the first artist to have a signature Stratocaster, Yngwie was the second, but same year, 1988.

The Stratocaster was literally made because the telecaster didn't balance well and was uncomfortable to a lot of session players.

I remember watching this documentary when it was first broadcast in Britain back in the early 90's I believe. I expected to see the likes of Clapton, Marvin, Hendrix, Richards etc discussing the Stratocaster. I recall the thrill - which I got again while watching this after 20 something years - of seeing my own personal guitar hero included within this documentary - Nils Lofgren. If you don't know his work, take the time to check him out. There's a reason he's included here.

Yes. I believe MK was influenced by JJ Cale and also by Chet Atkins. Singing style from Bob Dylan. Everybody gets influences from somebody, and the music evolves.

***** en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibrato Gary Moore and Tony Iommi are famed for they're vibrato, and both mainly use/used guitars with fixed bridges, unless you mean vibrato in a untraditional way ? Again, i totally understand what you mean, but we seem to disagree on one specific thing, my opinion is that the fingers mainly dictate someone's sound, and yours is that the guitar does, i understand that different guitars will give different sounds, one is low with a growl, the other high thin sounding, but with any player with their own voice you will still recongnize their sound on different guitars, because of their way of playing, wich is in the fingers.

Ironic, Hendrix played Keith Richards 1965 Stratocaster when Jimi arrived in London England in 1966. That 1965 Olympic white Stratocaster was gifted to Jimi by Keith Richards girlfriend Linda Keith...Keith Richards only found out later that his white Stratocaster was MIA...Keith and Linda's relationship soured soon there after..

it also has alot to do with the specific guitar you get. don't think because you spend 10 -20 gs on a vintage strat that it's gonna be a player. even the new custom shops can end up not being players. advice i got from a wise seasoned player was look for the guitars with wear from being played because you know it was well suited and was loved and if you see a vintage instrument in mint condition often times its in mint condition for a reason.

Mark was playing Schecter guitars for years, in the Alchemy tour video I think there are no Fender guitars that were used. Am I right? Telegraph road is played with a Schecter guitar. and i think i am right to say that "once upon a time " is played with a Schecter too.

Alright, it´s not the most important thing in this world. BUT it drives me CRAZY when anyone, and be it Mark Knopfler, tells you Hendrix didn´t actually play with his teeth. Well. ANYONE with a bit of patience can learn how to pluck the strings with their teeth. I, being a gigantic Jimi fan, did it with my first band at 15. And HE didn´t fool his audience. I know the sound.

On 1984 Harrison pick a CBS stratocaster for jamming with Deep Purple ( Ritchie Blackmore guitar ) . Keith Richards he play more tele than Stratocaster and Gilmour play Tele and Strat .
