We played this beautiful song yesterday during the funeral of my dad. He passed away way to early. During the last months of his life, he daily watched the liveshows of Harris & Knopfler. And said to me: "I want 'If this is goodbye' to be played at my funeral". This song will always move me to tears.

This is a song that is crystallized in our memories on that horrific day when we all lost our innocence. For those of us closest to the scene, we will NEVER forget the sub base here in Groton closing and all subs sent to sea, the children of these brave men and women ending up in our house as they feared for their lives, the sirens sounding off as Armageddon was upon us, and how we all looked at life a little differently after this day. It was not goodbye for us, as the song suggests for those on the planes, but we all felt the sorrow, horror, and no tomorrow on the 11th of September, 2001. Let’s hope we NEVER forget this time in our life.

Awesome!! is not the word to describe this song and the feeling that this song gives me. Maybe the word "overwhelming" is a better word to describe it because it just brings tears to my eyes. Emmylou Harris has always been one of my favorite singers,. I must admit I had never heard of Mark Knopfler but this guy is awesome for writing a song like this and the guitar playing just had a lot of soul in it. Thank you Mark and Emmylou for writing and and singing this beautiful song and for sharing your beautiful gift with your fans. Heidy and the band "Optimus"

Danny Cummings, Mark & Emmylou, Glenn Worf, Richard Bennet and Guy Fletcher..... Such a beautiful song about the worst atrocity ever since Pearl Harbour in the USA, I see people already know what inspired this song, but not what happened when Mark and Emmylou had rehearsed it 30+ times, he didn't tell her what the song was about........ when he finally told her "its about the phone calls made from the Fateful Planes from the passengers on 9/11 to their loved ones"..... the week before their 1st gig........ she broke her heart crying...... and in the few gigs of the Tour you could see the tears rolling from her eyes, you can hear the passion in her voice, for me Its 1 of the most Beautifully sad songs ever, and only a man that is MK could write such a song.....Emmylou also said about the album All the Roadrunning, which took 7 years to finish, "When you combine two unique voices it creates a third, phantom voice" and the live harmonies still make me shed a tear or two......God Bless all the Broken Hearted people on that awful day :(
