My first ever album...tape :) was 'Dire Straits'.Memories. A Saturday outing to Spanish City, the funfair at Whitley Bay, me and my sisters taken out for the afternoon by my father...a very 'proper' gentleman, quietly disgusted because the 'Wolf Man', caged, and probably bored sick by then of growling at everyone who went into his tent, had asked his daughter for a snog. Same as it ever was, Mark Knopfler was and is a musical constant, a troubadour of visionary stature.

What's amazing is the absolute passion Mark and the crew have for recording, in spite of the fact that most people are going to listen to an MP3 version of the songs, through their iPhones, on a cheap set of buds.

The 5.1 remix on the 20th anniversary SACD of Brothers in Arms was done in British Grove by Chuck Ainlay and Mark Knopfler. It is stupendous. I own three copies, two unopened. I bought the extras after I heard it on my BlueSky 5.1 system. If you want to know what all the fuss is about regarding SACD and 5.1, this is the benchmark.

Chuck Ainlay: Beatles this, Beatles that . . . George Harrison: "Without The Shadows there where no Beatles". The REDD-console with Malcolm Addey behind it has far more influence on music compared to The Beatles/mr Martin. In many things Addey and The Shads where ahead of The Beatles in studio techniques like using a studio monitor instead of the bass amp (1961) was later on copied by George Martin for McCartney's bass sound. Also combining orchestra, using effect and tone/volume pedals even on bass guitar, the list goes on . . .
