Pensa Suhr is perhaps the most gorgeous guitar ever designed and built... with the main intent being combining the tones of a Fender Strat and a Gibson Les Paul. Rudy Pensa and John Suhr did a marvelous job. MK took it to the next level with his heavenly playing....I think he used the Pensa on the ending solo of "Feel Like Going Home" on the Notting Hillbillies album.

It is a great guitar. I have considered getting a Suhr built for some time, but it's not a guitar I could ever gig with. Like the Ibanez Jem (Steve Vai) the guitar is too associated with the artist, and would invite comparisons and criticism.

"Suhr standard carve top Knopfler deluxe" One of Mark Knoplfers main guitars from 1988 onwards. A beautiful instrument. Master builder John Suhr designed and built the instrument back in 88 whilst working for Rudy Pensa in NY USA. "Suhr standard carve top Knopfler." One of Mark Knoplfer's main guitars from 1988 onwards. A beautiful instrument. Master builder John Suhr designed and built the instrument back in 88 whilst working for Rudy Pensa in NY USA. Brief history of the guitar, Knopfler needed a guitar for gigging that would sound and play like his 58 Les Paul and his red Fender Stratocaster. It was becoming too much to take all his guitars on the road, some of which were priceless. MK needed a guitar that could give him the two very different sounds in one package. This is where his good friend Rudy Pensa came in. Rudy, a business man not a builder, had a little specialist guitar shop in NY USA where he employed master builder John Suhr. Pensa and Suhr would later team up around the time MK was looking for a new guitar. They became Pensa-Suhr. At the time John Suhr was building his own guitar and both Rudy and MK were so impressed that Rudy convinced Suhr to give it to MK for a set of gigs coming up. His busy schedule demanded a new Swiss army knife of a guitar. This was May 1988. The issue was knopfler needed this new guitar like now. He had a set of important gigs lined up the following month. The first being in the Eric Clapton band for the "The Prince's Trust Gala" on 5th & 6th June 1988, Then on 8th and 9th of June he would play warm-up gigs for the up-coming 11th June Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Concert at Wembley. Jack Sonni was unable to attend and so his place in the band was taken by someone who Mark tells the audience “has played before” - Eric Clapton. In September, Mark and Alan Clark join Eric Clapton for a US tour. On the 20th of October, Mark appears with Randy Newman on Saturday Night Live and a month later Randy appears with Mark on BBC TV’s Wogan. The Money For Nothing compilation album enters the UK album charts on the 29th of October John Suhr Surh had very little time to finish off the guitar. Painting, fret dressing and pickups collection was still needed. The pick up selection would cause some issues too, as noted below. The paint would have only just dried in time for the Prince's Trust gig on the 5th, less then a months time. John was surprised the paint had dried so fast. Cosmetics was another issue. MK wanted this guitar to he a show piece to gain even more stage presence, essentially pulling the attention of the audience more toward him. This was one of the reasons he requested there to be NO plastic humbucker mounting plate fitted. The large pickup next to the bridge would normally be fitted into a plastic housing visible from the top. The believed this would take away the beautify of the figured make top the show piece of the guitar. He liked the colour of the EMG active pickups and thought the pickup holder would look messy and out of place. This would cause Suhr a problem. How does he now house the pickup? The guitar body was too thin for it to be screwed down into the body from the top. So Suhr had to mount the humbucker from the rear of the guitar through the tremlow cavity, a unusual way of mounting pickups. If you look closely at MK's guitar you will see the two small fixings screws. The Floyd Rose: Suhr had already routed out for a Floyd Rose, after all the guitar was for him not Mk at that time. Mk didn't like the Floyd floating trem and asked for it to be fixed back to the body. This infact created better resonance and sound it more convenient for fine tuning. Mark liked to bend more then one string at a time. A floating trem, he felt would have an adverse affect on this technique. Then there was the tapered headstock. MK wanted a Gibson style tapered headstock, however it was too late as the neck along with the body had already been built. Suhr had redesigned and improving on the fender style headstock and preferred it. You will notice there are no string guides on Suhr guitars due to this improvements. It's thought MK didn't like the look of string guides on the headstock which suhr had already addressed. The other issue John had was fitting the 5 position selection switch. The body was too slim to house so he had to trim down the rear of the switch just enough for the rear control cover to cover it. One other request was the neck to be maple with a rosewood finger board, which John wasn't too keen on due to the body being mahogany like a Les Paul. Fender guitars don't usually use mahogany hence their use of maple necks. John believed, and many would agree that the frequency emitted from the mahogany gets cancelled out with the maple resulting in a damping of the sound. Hence why Suhr always offers the matching mahogany neck with his builds. It really does improve the sound. In 1991 Suhr and Pensa party company. Suhr had become in demand due to his skills and abilities in both the guitar and Amplifier world and wanted more control over the full building progress. He's since built some of the best guitars on the planet. Now labelled "Suhr" with this Knopfler Standard Carve top version being the jewel in the crown. Suhr re. leaving Pensa "Steve Marchione was trained to replace me when I moved to CA to work with Bradshaw in the beginning of 91. Suhr was now able to have full control over the whole guitar build and able to so it in house, unlike at Pensa they used to outside help. Suhr would do all only be doing the delicate work the rest was contracted out. A lovely instrument and if you can ever get your hands on one be sure to buy it as it's a sure investment. Regarding the Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster sounds needed. This created a problem for Suhr to solve and to solve it fast. The guitar was needed within weeks for the upcoming gigs. As we know a Les Paul guitar uses humbucker pick-ups which are two single coil pick-ups mounted together with reverse wiring on one of the pickups to reduce the HUM caused by high gain amplifiers. Single coil pickups, when plugged into a high gain guitar Amps will create a loud hum and the louder you go the louder the hum. It's a pain to control. This is why rock guitarist use humbuckers. Mark Knopfler was wanting this Les Paul humbucker sound for songs like "Money for Nothing" along with single coil Stratocaster sounds for songs like "Sultans of swing." For that twangy strat signature sound. So the guitar would need at least 1 x humbucker (Les Paul sound ) and 2 x single coil pickups (Fender Stratocaster sound) BUT with no hum on all pickups. A tall order. So John quickly fitted the Active EMG range of pickups that where new on the marked, designed to address this common HUM problem. Lace sensor At this time Fender was also addressing the same issue and had employed Don Lace to address this. You will see the likes of Eric Clapton using these Lace Sensor around this time. Lace Sensor is a guitar pickup designed by Don Lace and manufactured by AGI (Actodyne General International) since 1985. This line of electric guitar pickups was used exclusively by Fender from 1987 to 1996. What was the issue? Pick-up Humming. The issue he was with the large number of wired windings around the magnet poles of a single coil pick-up. It was found that by reducing the number of winding (loops) the HUM would reduce to a unnoticed level, however the drawback was a massive reduction in the pick-up out puts levels. Making the sound output really low. To address this EMG designed a circuit board powered by a 9V battery located in the rear of the guitar to amplifier the sound. Bingo u have a stratocaster single coil sound with no hum at a standard volume level. Now there was one other draw back to this technology. The humbucker pickup, as noted above consists of 2 x single coil pickups wired together in series, so the sound is NOT fender Strat like when the selection switch is in the second position. Bridge and neck pickups on together. A lot of Fender Stratocaster players use the bridge and middle combination a lot. It's a common strat sound. Normally a humbucker can have the two pickups split at the wiring loom as there are 4 wires. 2 for each pickup, however the EMG humbucker just has the 2 wires and NO way to split the coil to give a single coil strat sound. This is where John Suhr's electronic knowledge comes in. He had to quickly design a wiring mod to reduce the output of the humbucker to take away some of the bass, bottom end of the sound to give it the Stratocaster high range twang. This is what he did The idea was to put a resistor and capacitor in series on the wiring harness (switch) where the 'humbucker meets switch position 2 (bridge + middle). Suhr used a 22k / .033uf. This drops the volume of the humbucker (the large bridge pickup) a bit and reduces some of the bass. This new sound gives you the fender Stratocaster sound you find in position 2. When the selector is in position 1 you get full bridge humbucker (Les Paul sound) and in position 2 Bridge and middle, the signal passes via cap and resistor to reduce the humbuckers output to balance and "quack" better with the middle and bingo you have the famous Stratocaster sound. (Resistence : metal film 22Kohms 0.25 Watt capacitor : 33 nF (0.033) 63 volts remove the original shunt beetween 1 and 2 move the orange cable from 2 to 1 you have to soldering the 2 components in serial (no polarity) and soldering them beetween 1 and 2)

This is a really useful comparison - Thanks. And your playing is fantastic. I just bought a Schecter Nick Johnston Diamond Series HSS, and I like it, but I am really curious as to how a similarly priced Fender Strat would sound by comparison. I tried several Professional series Strats in a store and I was not very impressed byy their tone and playability. They were fine, but nothing to get excited about. The Schecter Nick Johnston is half the price of a Fender Professional, and it comes with lockking tuners, a roasted maple neck and a truss rod wheel, none of which you get in the most expensive Fenders (outside of custom shop. models). Seemed like a no-brainer to me....

The only issue I have with the Suhr is the Floyd. I am just not a fan of locking trems. Otherwise, a very fine instrument. Mark also played some Suhrs that had 3 EMG single coils and TOM bridges which were very nice. I think he still plays them time to time.

Hello Ingo. I follow you work since always... Today I just want to tell you that all you do is really great...really interesting...and all guitar parts you're selling on your website are amazing. I dream to get a second "Drean Machine". In mid '80 I bought a real Shecter who sounded awsome... One day I let this heauty 5 minuts in my car...and a bastard's gone with my beauty... She was Candy apple red, neck without inlays...the pure copy of the Mark's Alchemy guitar. Woods were amazing. I got this DM from an old Tom Anderson partner. The great difference for me with Fender Strat are that Shecter are perfect for long time Tour because these guitars are really solid and robust...but they are still a lot heavier. I wanted asking you, what do you thinck about the new Shecter Tribute Guitar "The Sultan Model" ? I don't know if you played one of these...like I live in France a guy sold his own and I'm gonna to try it. Honnestly the quality of the fabrication...the parts used to built this guitar are strictly the same than old Shecter...sounds are really really good, I really wanted to buy it...BUT the headstock is not the original...even if it is a really nice shape. The Fender headstock is the only one I want on a Shecter DM...It's really a shame that the copyright won't be used to built this legendary copy...without this ENOURMOUS difference I'd came back home with the guitar... I listened to your 3 guitars... I nearly have the same Strat, I have the same Suhr MK1... The only différence is that I ordered directly at JS workshop during a travel in California. I talcked with John Suhr because like Mark don't use anymore Floyd Rose he told me that ii should be more logical that this guitar sounds really like a Strat with the strings free to resonate freely like with a Fender Strat or Shecter with a classi nuts and vibrato. So he advised me to put on a classic nut and a model Strat type vibrato SSV bridge. He told me that 90% of customers who are MK fans and want this guitar choose this bridge because it's the same that Mark use on his Pensa MK Custom. But I didn't talck more about R Pensa than these few words...it's better for Mr Suhr's mood... And I'm really enjoyed of this advice...there's nearly 10 years that I play my MK and it's really a perfect Dream Machine too... I did me too these sounds comparaisons and I get the same styles of sounds...for the Shecter I have mp3 with différents "Dire Straits" songs played with her at the time when I had mine. For me I feel the Fender more sweet...a round sound...the Shecter is more powerfull with a sound more bright...and easyer to make distored just with fingers...and for my MK1 it's a mix beetween Fender and Shecter...she has a round sound more powerfull...and with EMG pickups it's possible to get this saturated sound as easyer with the Shecter...it will be distorded but sweet more like if the Fender had powerfull pickups... But honnestly the 3 guitars are magic for me. Now I don't know what to do to recover the Shecter. I could do just like you did. Or to buy the Original Shecter Sultan and to modify the headstock to get the same than old Shecter... Wait and see...I thinck of that and I will choose after looking at all positives and negatives point of each solution. Sorry for this so long message Ingo. I'd like really to meet u to talk about this shared passion for MK, his sound, guitars etc... I really love all your work and research. I wish you a very good new year, all the best and the most important healthy for you and yours. I hope to see you soon with a new video... Cheers 😊...

Wow, a very long comment :) To your question for the Schecter 'Sultan', I must say that I do not like that (a) it does not have a mahogani body but alder, (b) the tremolo was not from heavy brass, (c) the pickguard was plastic instead of white aluminium, and (d) the pickups are not Seymour Duncans. I was on a music fair where it was presented when it came out. I asked the Schecter employee about these wrong 'details' but he did not know about the old Dream Machines, about exotic woods, brass hardware, and metal pickguards :(

@@IngoRaven Hello Ingo 😊. Thanck you so much for your answers, it's very kind. About the Shecter Sultan I believe it's a pure commercial idea... MK has so many Signature guitars...Fender, Gibson, Martin, National, Suhr, Pensa...Shecter was strangly missing... You're right the pickguard is made on plastic...and when I remember the neck of my old Shecter and that I look at your they're really similar both. You made a real great job. I met John Suhr 3 times. Twice in NY...first time in 1987 and in 1990 when he worked at "Rudy's Music Stop"...in 1987 he worked on the Black MK1...the prototype... I could tried and playing on this fabulous guitar and it's a great memory. And I remember he told me that Mark bought all his Shecter Guitars in this shop and it's JS who made the mounting of all the Mark's Shecter parts...but I believe he told me that he used Tom Anderson bodies for the body curves... He made the MK1 just after because Mark wanted really the guitar for the "Prince's Trust" concert ans the Nelson Mandela's Tribute on june 11th 1988. But are you a professionnal guitar maker or it's a passion ? Is it you who's builting all the fantastic loaded pickguards ? When I will buy you a loaded pickguard it will be the "Alchemy" one. But do there's differences beetween the "Alchemy" pickguard and the "On every street" one ? Just a last question Ingo... I had a Dobro DM-33 that I sold when I knew that National made the Style O 14 Fret. I tried this model at Thomann's Shop, this one is really really nice and sounds great...but...I coudn't tried the MK Replica with relic effect... Did you try this one ? Because she looks great too...do you have one of this model...or both ?😉. I really hope that I don't bother you with my long messages and questions... Thanck you so much Ingo. Cheers...take care.😉.

'Suhr is simulair to the Pensa Suhr Mark played'. Well, it isn't. I have an early Pensa Suhr Mk and I've played these Suhrs and the Pensa Suhr is a completely different guitar, much better, far more vintage and way better sounding. If you would have used a PS that would have been the easy winner.
