Imagine the treasure of a heart that this man has, that in these tormented times he can go right ahead and craft such a gentle, peaceful, loving and moving piece of music. The kind of music we need right now. Such a beautiful album. One of his greatest.

Edit: I should add that though we live in the Cotswolds UK, my husband is a Geordie from South Shields, he was so impressed with the artwork of the Tyne bridge etc. He said that you can travel the world, but a Geordie will always remain so at heart, just like Mark. Hubby is 51. My husband bought me the vinyl and cd box set for the ‘One Deep River’ album, including the bonus tracks, super high quality photos, a badge and the Mark Knopfler picks inside the adorable little plectrum tin. I was thrilled. It’s been playing on our record player pretty much constantly since I received it for my 35th birthday yesterday. What a treat.

@@annetteturner5972 fantastic! 40 years of loving MK for you and long may it continue. My late father who passed 3 years ago was a prolific guitar player and among others, directed me to Mark’s music from a young age (I’m talking about age 3). I’m so blessed and count my blessings daily. Sending love and light from me and my family to you and yours.

You may or may not know, Mark was actually born in Glasgow. His mother returned to the Newcastle area when he was about 7 years old. But yes, he was brought up in Geordieland. Seen him about 5 times.

@@tommckeraghan6520 I did know this, and thank you for the information regardless because I love Mark’s interesting childhood and younger years. It makes me feel so happy to know he found somewhere that his heart could truly call home. And please continue to tell everyone facts like these, as some people don’t know and there is power in knowledge. All the best to you and yours, from me and my family 😊

Thank you for your reply. My 2 heroes in music are Mark and Gerry Rafferty. Imagine my delight when Mark penned a track on the soundtrack of Local Hero and asked Gerry to sing the vocals on “That’s The Way It Always Starts” If you don’t know it, check it out.

Cantor, compositor, e Guitarrista fantatisco . PARABENS!!!!

Now the highway is sleeping The plains are still The steel rails are silent Sun's going down behind the hills And the night comes falling With the evening star Wherever you're going Wherever you are You are one deep river, old friend One deep river, amen You're one deep river, old friend One deep river, amen The wild geese are flying Into the west And your soul is heading To its rest But your light will keep on burning Like that evening star And your song will keep returning Wherever you are You are one deep river, old friend One deep river, amen You're one deep river, old friend

I love this song. It's well written, and we recognize Mr Mark Knopfker's style from the first notes. A very light Overdrive or blues-driver, and a very fine, very subtle solo. A nugget, like why whorry, or even ride across the river, you and your friend and many others. I have the album in mp3 version on 🍏music, but I'm going to buy it on 33rpm vinyl as soon as it's released. Thank you Mark for all these pieces, which are a bit like bandages that we put on our soul and heart wounds.

Pure magic once again . Mark has the knack of fondling the strings of a guitar , of caressing the instrument , sort of . It's sheer musical impressionism , in which very little is enough to trigger a huge emotional earthquake ! A beautiful tribute to the Tyne river , so dear to his heart ! A very moving piece of music indeed !🤩🤩🤩

brilliant. On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

I've listened to this track repeatedly since it was released, and it just occurred to me now that it is, or at least could be, an ode to Bob Dylan. The opening chord changes immediately reminded me of Stuck Inside of Mobile, and now when I read the lyrics, I noticed references to "steel rails" (Workingman's Blues #2 and perhaps also Slow Train Coming) and "night comes falling" (When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky). The second verse also seems to capture the mood of Not Dark Yet. Mark and Bob have worked and toured together over the years, and "One Deep River" certainly is a great way to describe him. Who else thinks that the albums Mark produced for Bob (and played on) are still the sweetest to listen to?
