After studying the lyrics, I'm fairly sure this song is a tribute to Mark's first wife, Kathy White. They split shortly before Mark left for London to start the band which became Dire Straits. Lovely song, and unusually direct for Knopfler. He has of course written about his personal life before (Romeo and Juliet, Love Over Gold, It Never Rains) but they are very abstract, so it's unusual (IMO!) to see such a direct lyric.
