His background is in athletics, not music. He got a track scholarship from TCU as a triple jumper, and his college degree is in marketing. Where the hell did he find the time to be such an accomplished player? As a Division 1 college prospect, in high school you know he spent his time training and going to track & field meets. If you’ve never seen a div 1 college athlete compete in high school, believe me the talent jumps out and it’s obvious they are in a different universe than the “normal” kids. My point starting out was he must be a dedicated and fast learner at least in college when he had no time to work on guitar. Well, he found it somehow.

@Augusto Lopez Mark visited TIM PIERCE (search on YT), he shares some details there. At the beginning of practice, the bassist ALWAYS walked away or didn't come at all. Instead of getting angry, he started playing that part as well.

With fine music videos such as this one, there's sometimes the "moment", when there's something you've never quite heard before, an approach to music and the moment that makes you go, "oh! the universe is one notch bigger than I thought." Or maybe, "this music thing is connected to that other music thing", and when it's really special you'll see the musicians themselves reacting, even briefly, like whoa we're in the zone. So here it's Shaun Martin topping out his solo, forgoing the usual climactic cascade of notes, for an intense, melting harmonic layer which harnesses instead the energy of the riff when it comes back in hard to be his own energy amplifier, bending up into an unexpected and bold reharmonization of sorts until his eyes roll up and Herbie's face practically morphs out of his for a Sunlight second. So, yeah, I'd never seen or heard that before (around 4:00 - 4:20)

from a classically trained musician - how the do they all remember the track and not scared to up the recording with a single wrong note? Amazed.
@joshjet2oo3 ай бұрын
The muscle of remembering long form, complicated music is VERY similar to the muscle of being able sight read without thinking. If you do it as often as these guys do, coming from the backgrounds of playing in church, high end jazz/fusion orchestras/bands, and crazy intricate gigs, they just have incredible short term memory and recall from all the reps on that muscle. When people ask you “how do you sight read such complicated music without messing up?” It’s the same way that you’re reading my sentences without thinking about reading them, it’s just built in from repetition of learning/doing so much.
