As a young girl she ran wild - freely gave herself to men who understood. She lay naked in the sun giving birth to what was clear and strong and good. Oh Lord to hear her laugh was to know a joy that drove a soul insane. And she'd lead you down a path through her river valleys etched in summer rain. Do you miss America? miss America? miss America ? I know I do. She was offered jewels and fame and she wore the furs of souls who once she loved. She was driven to the site of a marble grave where lay a dying dove. Rage exploded 'cross her face and make up melted on the cemetery lawn. And she cried for an embrace and she wrapped her fingers 'round the deep rose dawn. Do you miss America? miss America? miss America ? I know I do. I've seen her in the forest and she's singin' peaceful songs for you and me, And I've heard her in the hills and I'm glad to say she's still alive and free. Oh Lord her lovin' eyes casting ripples 'neath the sun without a sound. And she mirrors a clearing sky as her children dance along the rain washed ground.

I met Mark in Reno,in the early 80's when I worked at Harrah's casino. I was off work,and went in to talk with Paul Revere,who I was friends with,and they were doing a sound check,so I stood up at the entrance to the big room. I was watching when someone walked up and stood next to me. After a moment he asked if i thought the sound was alright. I knew that voice as well as my own,from when I was a kid and had all their records. I looked up,and he smiled,with the question still on his face. I said yes,sounds great to me. He replied he thought so too. And then he walked down the aisle to the stage. A cherished moment in my life. :}

This was a minor hit in the Lincoln, NE market ; it got airplay for only a few weeks (1970? 1971?). "Miss America" was a hair-raising juxtaposition of easy-listening pop and far-out lyrics. Years later I found a copy of the 45 in a used-record store; I think the flip side was called "Small Town Woman" - very mellow track. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols says that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a piss stain I have to agree because they put the Sex Pistols in there! When Paul Revere died a couple of years ago the obituary in Rolling Stone magazine they interviewed little Steven Van Zandt and he said the reason the writers would not be ever inducted was because they were too entertaining I spoke with him a couple of months ago when he was here in Dallas and mentioned the obituary and he said they would never be inducted simply because they wore those costume uniforms. @1962drob You're right about sports, in particular. I'd quit being a big sports fan in my 20s. But I've gotten back into it, just because TV is so bad. Also, like you said, TV Land, too. Barney Fyfe is forever. (No need to respond back. Thx).

This was the better song. It's about Lady Liberty in New York Harbor.

@bcrnfan - Not exactly. The liner notes from Mark's 'Complete Columbia Singles' cd quoted him as saying that it was "...a commentary on a country in turmoil." (Vietnam war). Mark added, "1967 was one of the kindest, gentlest years but in 1968 things started turning nasty. Even in Haight-Ashbury there wasn't much love on the streets. I liked the song and I liked the message...." ("Do you miss America?") Many stations wouldn't play 'Miss America' because they didn't understand that it was a patriotic, not sexual song.

The lyrics are so clever. From my first listen I assumed it was about a real Miss America. But I soon realized it was saying he misses America. These really are some of my favourite lyrics

@@60s70sVintageRock For some reason, I always thought the lines "Rage exploded 'cross her face, her make-up melted on the cemetery lawn" referred to the Revolutionary War.

@@basilmarasco1975 There's no info on the songwriter (James Jerome Kelly III), so I guess it's open for any interpretation. I just assumed it was inspired by the turbulent late 60's. (See more info in Jude Pathrose's thread pinned at the top.)

@wouldntyoulike2know And to continue from where I left off, having lived in 3 major cities in my lifetime, each city has been a meca for celebrities and TV shows. For example, New York City had The Ed Sullivan Show; Hollywood, California had The Carol Burnett Show (used to watch that all the time), and Las Vegas has the newest version of "Let's Make A Deal", with Wayne Brady as host. Personally I like Monty Hall way better. Just thought you'd like to know. Peace, Dean

This is about Vietnam vets ?

I think it has something to do with Vietnam and the anti-war protest of that period. There were certain anti-war songs during the war, such as "War" by Edwin Starr, "Bring The Boys Home" by Candi Staton, "Sweet Cherry Wine" by Tommy James & The Shondells, and a few others.
