@braziliantexatlantis74855 ай бұрын
Love the conversation here about Norm. Mark misquoted Norm's Sarah Silverman joke, Norm said "Who's funnier than Sarah Silverman, except dudes," which is a wittier -- and more defensible -- joke than what Mark said. (Norm was friends with Sarah, and his implied observation in that joke that all the comedians who were funnier than her, Steve Martin, Dave Chappelle, etc. were dudes would be accurate, if she was Norm's favorite female comic and he liked them even better, so Norm's joke was... clever. And since Harland brought up Joan Rivers, Norm mentioned on Norm Macdonald Live that he thought she was great. Harland and Norm had a falling out roughly 20 years before Norm died and never hung out again, so the Norm Harland hung out with may have been a somewhat different guy regarding casual sexism than Norm later.)
@edgeheadxCOD5 ай бұрын
@@braziliantexatlantis7485 I'm not sure that's true about the "falling out" 20 years ago, because Harland has told some Norm stories that seemed more recent than that. I think what Normand and Harland missed here is that Norm was always a provocateur, and always about the joke. He knew how people would respond to saying women aren't funny, which he clearly didn't believe to be true given the respect shown to Joan, Silverman, and of course Roseanne.
@braziliantexatlantis74855 ай бұрын
@@edgeheadxCOD Harland has said "falling out" about 20 years before Norm died (Harland dropped Norm and won't say why), and mentioned that they ran into each other once long after that and were friendly, agreed to hang out, and never did. I think Harland knows quite well how Norm talked in the 1990s privately and would hear him be sincerely sexist then (I've ever heard Norm lean into the women aren't funny with one of those hey they don't get the chance because standup is a male art form by its nature type arguments) and, knowing that Norm changed a lot during the 1990s to 2010s, I think he changed his mind some about women and comedy. Norm said in 2016 about his women making cookies joke, "If you took that serious, that doesn't mean I'm sexist, that means you're fucking retarded."
