Wabi sabi... I've been thinking in terms of this philosophy lately, wandering the sidewalks and streets of my city, collecting broken glass and cigarettes, and not knowing that there was a way to define my line of thinking. I really want this book now.

Wabi-Sabi is such an amazing concept. It captures something of the spirit of the Buddhist aesthetic for life. Nice video. I like the comment above about how peaceful and warm this notion feels. Such a relief from the perfection of Western notions of beauty, which I find so oppressive in comparison to Wabi-Sabi.

One reason for the existence of Wabi Sabi pottery is because somethings can not be expressed through words as words in themselves are Wabi Sabi. I think maybe instead of asking someone in Japan to explain what Wabi Sabi is, maybe better to ask them to SHOW you what it is. You cannot be TOLD what it is.

You can find it in objects that is mass produced, but just if they pass the test of time. In alot of ways wabi-sabi is " the estetics of time passing" . And time passes in all things, even the unorganic and mechanic

Wabi-Sabi: Take a moment to observe your world and see if you notice the interesting and oft overlooked details of existence. Find peace and beauty in the notion that these details do provide contradictory meanings to the same object or image. Nature provides us with a seemingly timeless-space to reconnect with the wabi-sabiness of the world; we oft lose this way of looking at the world if we become to absorbed in our ego and egotistical notions of personal importance or power in society. The story of existence is told by contradictions and imperfections.

We need to think of wabi-sabi as being of a similar concept of the influential Taoist yin-yang. While not the same concept as yin-yang, though wabi-sabi grew from the Tao and Buddhist philosophies prevalent in China, there is a certain duality which is inherent in the logic of both. The duality logic, I guess which can be generalized as: meaning / understanding through the mutual dependence of opposites, is difficult to explain in English and in the "West" I think because we do not often appreciate the contradictions and rhythms of existence in our general philosophies and religion.

+B. Levin Though now that I think of it, I am sure yin-yang is difficult to understand and is not the best way for understanding wabi-sabi. Maybe good to think of wabi-sabi as finding the beauty in the unique mistakes we make in our pursuit of the aesthetic. It is a humbling and meditative way of observing and interpreting the world, Coming to the understanding that the contradiction of the imperfection provides its own unique aesthetic and becomes like "it's own type of perfection."
