About This Video
I had the privilege to talk to Professor Mark Solms. He is the Director of the Neuroscience Institute at the University of Cape Town. He is credited for discovering the brain mechanism for dreaming and bringing Freudian psychoanalytic thought to modern neuroscience. However, dreams aren't the sole reason Mark trained as a neuropsychologist. He was out for the heart of the discipline - consciousness itself. What is a mind? How does the self, the thing that experiences, arise from the pink matter that is the brain? Listen to Mark tackle these questions head on.

Thanks. Dr Solms is tragically underappreciated

Agreed. But you know, getting to do the work is the ultimate prize.

@@theidealisticman also agreed. I think what's happening is the people with an affinity for hard science don't agree with him for taking first person experience seriously, and people that start by taking first person experience seriously aren't appreciative of his work in the hard science of the brain. I think he's right in that focusing too much on either is going to miss something.

@@uninspired3583 That is an interesting diagnosis. I think people will have no choice but to take him seriously if and when he demonstrates the theory as he explains towards the end.

@theidealisticman which theory did you have in mind specifically? I watched this in pieces over the last few days trying to absorb it all

@@uninspired3583 his entire theory of consciousness. We currently do not have a generally accepted/credible theory of how consciousness arises in the brain. In his book, and in this video, he attempts to explain how. I recall that I asked him what he thinks of Donald Hoffman's lamentations that none of our current theories (IIT, Orchestrated collapse of micro tubules, global workspace etc.) can explain how one comes to smell coffee, taste chocolate etc. His response was that Hoffman must read his book. When I say towards the end, I mean the part where he says they are currently working towards building a conscious artificial agent to demo his work.
