he didn't even mention, the basingstoke navigation canal which ran all the way to london, to transport locally grown produce to london. i lived on an original wooden barge, converted to a houseboat, called the basing, at pyrford lock. no engine, it was towed by horses on the towpath. it was opposite a market garden. now a golf course. apparently golf is more important, than food these days. and don't talk to me, about how new is better, when the world is becoming a giant rubbish tip

You can follow the Basingstoke Canal all the way to London, where you can join other canals that cover almost the entire country - as long as you don't mind carrying your barge around the Greywell tunnel, which is closed now because some bats are nesting in it - well, and because it has partly collapsed. But the canal is good from Odiham.

Ah yes, there has been a book written about that, by Bob Clarke. You've probably read it? I haven't yet, but I'm sure I'll get round to it.
