Dont see enough of Mark these days , he was good friends with 2 of my favourite comics Jeremy Hardy and Linda Smith both gone now, hope we see more of Mark soon but these talks are a reminder of how good, informative and funny he is.

Still hear him on Radio 4 sometimes. He does a programme where he tours the country lecturing about the local history of whichever town he's in this time with his usual cheeky humour.

Thomas Paine is definitely one of the greatest Britons. A man so far ahead of his time he'd still be shunned today.

A great man but also a traitor to this country. In a pamphlet he supported Napoleon invading Britain; this would have set liberty back years. We abolished slavery twenty years before France did.

Milk before tea? Messah Steel is a heathen like myself.
@WORKERS.DREADNOUGHT10 жыл бұрын
Working class people had cheap earthenware cups which would break if you put the boiling water in first which is why we used to put in cold milk first. However posh people had porcelain (like Lucy Worsley who said this on TV which is how I know) so they could put the milk in last. I don't actually take milk anymore but I put it in second for my wife so you can tell how brown you want it & mugs these days are more classless.

Mark Steel referred to it in the episode but not by name. Read 'Agrarian Justice' by Tom Paine. He pretty much argues for basic income on the basis that the Earth is the common property of all. A real trailblazing, uncompromising, thinker. The only 'Founding Father' worth respecting today.

Paine's father was a "stay-maker" which isn't making corsets, but mooring ropes! The story about him being a corset-maker was put about by his enemies.

At 13:22 I remember this repitile coming on Have I Got News For You and making the same point, only to have the hypocritical snobbery of it all summed by Ian Hislop with the following remark 'there's nothing like a socialist who despises his own class is there?'
@markpaul1205 жыл бұрын
Not a fan then ? Ian hislop did not say that though, he said working class didn't he. Why hypocritical?

Mark was ridiculing working class people who suck up to royalty. Not the working class in general. Hislop’s criticism was unfair.
