I was at that Lurkers gig. It was just something you accepted back then. But if you were sussed you could avoid trouble like at football. I remember seeing a Jam secret gig at the Marquee at that time I came out early and there were 100 skins waiting outside. They smashed the front of the place in and ran down the road towards me. Ive never run so fast !!

I moved to Florida almost forty years ago, if I went back to my hometown of Southend I probably wouldn’t recognize a lot of things except maybe the sea front. I bet a lot of the same pubs are still there but maybe under new management.

HOODY! He was the teacher everyone liked, with his infections "ho ho ho" laugh. When I was in 6th form we put on a comedy pantomime and managed to get him in a tutu; we was always up for sending himself up. Swanley didn't seem that overtly violent when I was there (compared to areas of real poverty and crime), it was just a culture of putting other people down and acting like you were cock of the walk, certainly among schoolkids. As Mark says, there was simply nothing to do and nowhere to go and only two pubs... well one really, leading to a stifled atmosphere with little to aspire to. I don't remember a single occasion at school when anyone got us together and talked about our options, university etc.
