That tiny sink above the water tank is a way for us Asians helped in water conservation. The idea is, after you did your thing in the toilet, wash your hands in that tiny sink and the 'used" water goes into the tank to be use for flashing the next time you use the toilet again.

How Japanese take a bath: you first wash yourself sitting on the stool in front of the mirror and using the shower. If you are completely clean, you go into the bathtub to relax. After you finished relaxing, you cover the hot water in the tub with a sheet or kind of plastic blanket to keep it warm, because the next person will use the same water to relax. That is why you have to be clean before you enter the bath tub. I was in Japan for a traineeship and stayed three months with a Japanese family, that is where I learned how to use the bathroom.

My daughter and family lived in Shibuya for two years. We saw such a contrast. We went to a beautiful park and I had to go to the bathroom and it was just a hole in the ground. We went to a pretty hotel for dinner and the bathroom was ultra modern. The toilet had several buttons, seat warmer, warm water spigot to cleanse and music played. Their home was unusual for Japan , quite large and pretty. My husband and I really enjoyed Japan. Tokyo was fun and fascinating. We went to Kyoto to get the old world flavor. The "bullet train" was awesome. They have dispenser machines for everything. Great experience.

This apt seems to be about 30 years old; more modern buildings are much bigger, with even more "hi-tech" stuff built in. The actual size of a unit can be as small as one room only and as big as 3 bedrooms, living room, etc. Still, at $60/night in the middle of Tokyo seems a good value for a family-oriented visit with a baby. This is not a "standard" by any means for a family of three or more:) for Tokyo "residents" in the upper/middle class segment. Fun video, though.

As far as I have found out the little sink in the bathroom is for washing your hands and then the "hand water" gets saved in the tank for next time you flush. For saving water. I know there was a larger one right there but that seemed a bit western style, perhaps they put it in just in case outsiders come for visit/live there for a while...and well it is a luxury thing. That bathroom was very big for such a small apartment in Japan as far as I have seen. Such a cutie petutie rolling on the his bed
