British pianist Solomon's rarely issued August 19, 1952 recording of Haydn's Sonata No.48 in C Major, Hob.XVI/35.
Issued on a British Columbia LP soon after it was recorded and only once later in a German Da Capo LP box set compilation (and as far as I can tell, never on CD), this performance has long been overlooked, yet it is a marvellous example of the great pianist's artistry. Solomon had set down an earlier recording of another Haydn Sonata in 1946 before making this one six years later, but recorded no other works by this composer.
This performance is, like so many Solomon recordings, notable for the luminous tone, articulation that is deftly defined even in legato passages, magnificently refined dynamic shadings, and spritely rhythmic pulse, all of which help the pianist bring this centuries-old score to life.
