Building a Land Navigation Kit.

In this video I thought I would share the items of kit that I like to carry in my land navigation kits. I thought this could be of interest to those who might be thinking of venturing further afield or deeper into the woods and are looking to build your own kit. This is ideal for the hiker, hunter, wild camper, angler and woodsman alike.

A good choice of items for the kit for navigation purposes. Not too much and not to little! The fresnel lens was interesting. Never thought of it. As you age seeing the details on a map is toughie! Thanks for the video!

I love those little Suunto button compasses. So reliable, I mostly use it as my main compass as it hangs on my shoulder strap. Either they were not selling them enough and slowed production on these, or they just realized theirs was the only button compass that actually works, because the price has risen dramatically. (bought mine for 5$ some years ago, would cost around 20$ to get a second one at the same place)

Very cool Mark, going through your archives will teach one a lot of useful things! I've never seen one of those fresnel lenses but hopped online and ordered right away! Navigation is first thing on my list of skills to learn one day properly. I guess your being ex-serviceman means you got some pro experience/ training in the past Cheers Chris

Hi Chris, many thanks for watching and for the comment mate, It is always great to hear from you :) I agree, having navigation skills is important if you want to leave the paths. I learnt most of my navigation skills when I became a guide. It was one of the best things I learnt. But the key is practice. Something I should do more of myself at times. The Fresnel lenses are great. I use them for both map reading and fire lighting. I think I picked half a dozen up for a couple of pounds, or they a free from the Opticians lol. I usually have one in my rucksack as a spare somewhere :) Thanks again Chris and have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

That was a great video Mark, Normally when I'm out in the woods shooting videos I have a field above me the slope I film on and then a river which makes navigation quite easy, so I never really get to use the techniques, Keep up the good work - Josh

It isn't very often that I need to use any form of navigation other than memory as I am very familiar with the location. I couldn't get to grips with it and wouldn't know where to start with using a map or compass. I stopped getting lost when the sat nav came out lol. I should learn though.

Anyone know the name or brand of the small white red light showed? Did I hear it correctly that a small charge was created when pushing the two ends together? Meaning you got some small amount of electricity generated each time you do that just by the pressing itself? Never seen that before. Sound a bit to good to be true.

Hi Ghanaboyz, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍. You can actually buy the lights from fishing tackle shops. They are designed to fix on a sea fishing rod tip for night fishing. I think you can get them green, blue or red. I have had it for years, so unfortunately don't know the name of the light or manufacturer, I picked it up when i was working in a tackle shop. I have seen similar on Amazon,so it could be worth a look on there. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)

As it happens, I have thought a bit on tiny light sticks, beta lights and such used for fishing, but with other potentials (very much those you mention here). Just never saw something like what you showed and it seems better. Up to now I have only seen green beta lights with no off switch. My general feeling on one-time usage lights sticks is that they are not worth it and tiny tools in the field is an emergency thing. I really appreciate the video and your reply. You do solid stuff.

For a damn cool Land Nav smartphone app, go to Google Play Store and find Land Nav for Dummies by Ranger Ron. He has several apps (you may have to scroll down on that page) that will calculate range and bearing from your present GPS position to a known GPS location and some of them autocorrect for changes, especially one called TRAILBLAZER. You can practice your Land Nav skills and use this app to check yourself. Works Great!

That app only works with lat-long, no option for UTM.
