How to Replace a Radiator with out draining the system

If you want to replace an old radiator with a new convector radiator and you want detailed step by step instructions. Then I have made this video for you.
I will explain in detailed, what's needed so you can replace the radiator with little fuss or mess.

First vid I've found that actually shows a combi system depressurised! I've changed a radiator and valves in my house before but on a gravity system, got 2 rads and valves to do at my mums which is pressurised and wondered what will happen once the valves are disconnected from the pipes- ie do they constantly weep and is it a frantic race against time lol. It's 8mm microbore too so have bit the bullet and bought the Monument olive cutter pliers as these crappy pipes won't be as robust as 15mm for pliers or hacksaw. Very thorough video... I'm definitely a convert to using jointing paste on compression fittings now too!

just bought two rads too replace the heat only 1974 rads and parts and going to use this guide as its the most methodical one I've seen, your the tommy ball of plumbers , edit I've just fit my first rad replacing the old round top type even after the system was flushed black still come out on left side but not right , serious rust there , helped me allot this guide got another to change but i think its best too replace the other two also so upstairs are all done

I prefer to use an RTV sealant on threads going into radiator, because the radiator tails are chrome plated and the threads in the radiator are normally quite rough, so the rough metal just peels the PTFE tape off, where the RTV will still stay in place and cure - once had to unscrew 14 radiator fittings that I used PTFE tape on, they were all leaking and the tape had been scraped off. Replaced with RTV silicone and no more leaks ( the RTV is cured by moisture so cures very quickly ) - for threaded connections that seal on the tread Loctite 55 PTFE + nylon cord forms an instant pressure tight seal, had to use it on a thermostat housing into a pressurised hot water cylinder system that had been dripping for a while, it sealed instantly and I could pressurise system straight away.

Your instructions are superb. Many thanks. A couple of questions if I may. 1. Do I have to change the olives if I'm installing new valves? 2. If I replace more than one radiator. Do I refill each radiator individually or reopen the valves on all (I've replaced four in a bungalow) and refill.

Just pop some compression cap end on the tails or a 15mm service valve. Lift it off full of water and drain it outside.

Wow Mark, first class instruction gave me the confidence to replace an old rad, lock-shield and TRV. Everything that I experienced along the way had been expertly covered by your tutorial and so I was able to address and complete everything as it presented. I had recently over clad a plasterboard wall so the distance from wall to valve was changed, so when refitting the new rad I had already expected the difference and planned accordingly. Super Super stuff, Thanks. Now considering a flush for my other radiators as I've had issues with blocked heat exchanger on my combi.

Great video, I have replaced a rad before but some years ago and this is a good reminder of correct procedures. Only thing is, the pipe centres on the new rad I'm looking at buying are 50mm from wall and on the old they are 70mm, so am wondering how to get around this, am hoping the existing pipes will push back .. but 20mm is a lot to move back..

Good video, and info about bracket position. One thing is, my pipes are approx 70mm from the wall and the new brackets set the radiator tail centres of the new rad at 50mm. I'm hoping I can turn the bracket around so would bring the rad out more from the wall but 20mm is a lot to lose. I can't use the old brackets as they are the clamp type which are unsuitable for the type 11 convector with grills.. 🤔

I have a couple of questions: 1. for an open-vented system would closing off all the other radiators in the system improve the chances of getting and keeping a vacuum? 2. unless I missed it, I didn't hear you suggest we add inhibitor to the radiator when filling the new radiator for the first time.
