Mark, thanks so much for your time in making this excellent video. I have followed your instructions and replaced a knackered and rusty bathroom radiator and old valves with a new towel radiator and new valves. As you say, there's no need to drain down if your instructions are followed. I have saved loads of time and hassle by not draining down. Thank you 😀👍🏼

Thanks Mark great video. Helped me replace the lockshield on my lounge rad with a TRV body (seemed to have been setup as the pass-thru radiator so always overheated the room in winter - I swapped this to my bathroom radiator). I needed a stepped spanner to get teh rad tail off and fit the new 15mm tail (like the key you show you had made at about 42:00). I couldnt make one as didnt have the parts or time so bought a stepped spanner from my local plumbers merchants and the tail turned out to need the 16mm hex.

Thanks for this video Mark, it was really insightful and gave me the confidence to tackle the job. One small issue I ran into was I couldn't get the old olive off the radiator tail/spigot so was unable to reuse it, forcing me to replace it and the new one I got in the pack with the TRV was a few millimeters too short to provide a good seating into the valve. In your video you mentioned you can get longer tails/spigots and cut them down to size, which is a good solution but I also found a telescopic tail (Screwfix 10954) which can be adjusted to be just the right length. This allowed me to get a good seating between radiator tail and value! Not sure if you've covered it in previous Q&As but I'd like to know if the process is any different in a downstairs radiator on a combi boiler system?

Does it make sense to drain the system if I want to change a few TRVs? It sounds like it might be less hassle in the long run. We have just moved house and there are a number of sticking Drayton TRV3s. I have managed to loosen a couple but one is stubbornly stuck shut now and the pin won't budge.

Great video Mark, thanks. I did come across one problem which I didn't see in the video. My radiators have the larger flange-connector (no olive) into the radiator. I managed to source some of these but it was only when I started to tighten the larger nut onto the new valve that I realised that the new valve has a differnt thread from the old one. The new valve's thread was much coarser. I've had to put the old valve back on temporarily, and I guess I may have to change the spigot, assuming the new spigot has the same thread as the old one! I didn't realise that there were different threads available. The radiators have been in situ for probably 30-40 years though so I suspect that standards may have changed.

Looks like the valves are 3/4inch (not 1/2in) to the rad. I.e. 10mm to 3/4in to the rad. Also the it's a sealed system - i.e. with a system boiler and a megaflow cylinder. Question 2 if there are 7 radiators above the one I’m working on can I use your system if I isolate those radiators ? Thank you 👍I’m glad I found your channel I’ve found it very informative 🤔
@MarkBallardLTD
@MarkBallardLTD 3 жыл бұрын
I would say yes. I've done that for sure in the past. in the end it's just down to how the water flows in your system. isolating both radiator valves on every radiator above. would definitely stop the water from coming out but then even then this is no guarantee that water won't come out. just do one pipe at a time. Keep the other one capped /isolated. And with any luck you'll be able to do it. No guarantee. What have you got to lose you try it if water comes out and you just have to drain.

Enjoying your content, but have a question, i have 2 pipes quite close together which have blanking caps on them, i know they were inlet and return for a radiator that was in place a good few years ago, i am going to install a little radiator on the wall, above these two pipes, the main boiler worcester 28i is upstairs, the little room downstairs, how could i test to see which was the inlet and which one was the return without draining the system if possible, if i turned all the valves to off on the other downstairs rads would that stop water coming out the inlet, i am guessing before all that i should put the heating on and one pipe should get hot, any advice appreciated.
@MarkBallardLTD
@MarkBallardLTD 3 жыл бұрын
That is a tricky one, you can do all sorts of things to try and work this out and still have conclusive result. My question would be. why you need to know no. the flow and return on most radiators and radiator valves it doesn't matter. unless you are putting in a straight trv then sometimes they only have one direction. The way I would do this is just a fit it and then you have a 50/50 chance which way round it is. if it's wrong just turn the valve over and then it'll be the right way round. you should know it doesn't matter which side you put the thermostat on the flow or return makes no difference these days. Hope that helps anyone else who's got this problem
@MarkBallardLTD
@MarkBallardLTD 3 жыл бұрын
If you definitely need to know. the one of the best ways is just to put two isolation valves on the two pipes connected together with a length of hose . Turn on your central heating get the heating nice and hot then open both isolation valves see which one gets hot first. That's your flow

Hi Mark. I must confess, I am a little puzzled. When "releasing pressure" from the rad, why did you not close the valves first? This is really going to show my ignorance...Wouldn't water within the pipework continue to flow into the radiator as you were releasing water through the bleed valve at the top of the rad? Especially, if the radiator was on the ground floor with lots of radiators and pipework above it it throughout the 1st floor. Doesn't all that water in the above pipework flow downwards to nearest open point in the system, in this case the radiator you are working on? I know that you said that you you prefer to not adjust other valves within the home whilst undertaking this type of job, because of the risk of creating further leaks. Hope that make sense. 😄
