I could watch equipment operators for hours. My husband would have loved recovery work like this. He had extraordinarily good vision and depth perception. He could get every ounce of work out of a tractor without breaking down. He definately liked being the cause of the sound of destruction. 😊

Great video Mark! All railroad workers are damn good at what they do. They get this stuff cleaned up safely and very quickly in some very interesting locations. I'm impressed with these guys and girls! I really enjoy your channel Mark. I love the Tahachapi region. I'd love to visit it someday, in the mean time your videos take me there. Thanks!

Never know where anything is going to go while moving derailed cars or things in the way . I've seen rail cars flip and/or roll when it's unexpected . I saw a boxcar load of coil springs bust open and coil springs flew every which way scaring everyone on site even officials standing up on a hill thinking they were safe but they got the closest near misses than everyone else . Glad you and Randi were any to dive for cover and not get hit by the tree . Awesome video Mark . Hope your still enjoying retirement .

One would suspect some restoration work needs to be done on the slope below the tracks; erosion over the winter could prove problematic. Interesting video, Mark. Thanks for the post.

Agree. Those trees provided stability to a fairly steep embakment. Remedial work is a necessity!

Mark, What will that do for erosion control as all the vegetation was lost dragging those cars down the hill?
@MarkClayMcGowan Жыл бұрын
As I said in the video, I don't know. We don't get a lot of rain in this area, but this is forecast to be another wet year. It could be in the text of the permitting process. No one I've spoken with at the RR seems to know, but it does seem like something that should be done. Thanks for checking it out!

Is this derailment near west end Cable or is it between west end Cable and the loop? It looks like the road above could be Interstate 10.

It was one mile below the CP of Cable, just west of tunnel 14

A month ago, was able to see something like this live action. The CN Track is behind the house. Had to walk up the valley a bit to view the wreck but it was worth it. It is truly amazing how they remove, clean the area & lay new track in such a short period of time. To get the trains moving once again. The derailment were containers as well. I was wondering? Did you ever find out if they caught the people who stole/took the wrecked Autos they pulled out of the Auto-racks? Great video. 🍁♂🏳🌈🌟✨🌟✨🌟✨🌟

so the owners of the cars damaged; do they have insurance or does the RR who hauls them pay for the damaged cars?
@MarkClayMcGowan Жыл бұрын
shippers can insure loads, the railroads are bonded. Sometimes it depends on the cause of the derailment as to who pay. In this case, it will definitely be the railroad!

@MarkClayMcGowan Жыл бұрын
This happened January 21, 2023. Since most of the cars were on private property and land managed by the state, the permitting process took months! A rail broke under a train as it backed down the hill due to a stall. Ten cars went on the ground. Thanks for checking it out!
@truckerkevthepaidtourist Жыл бұрын
What caused that derailment? The one from months ago they're just getting too or is that a new one?
@MarkClayMcGowan Жыл бұрын
This was the one in January, which was caused by a rail breaking under the train. Permitting took five months, then the contractors equipment was vandalized in July. It's been quite the show!

@@MarkClayMcGowan wow that's crazy It makes you wonder be in tehachapi and where it's at Place how the hell did they get in to vandalize it that's I thought they had some like web cameras around there I know someone does that you know like virtual railfan you can watch the loop I had no idea permitting took that long either you're right that is one heck of a show

This is why you should watch ALL my videos! This happened in January. Permitting processes took nearly five months. Hulcher started cleanup then, but their equipment was vandalized, so they left. They just returned. There has only been one derailment on the Tehachapi since this one.

OK, if those things are loaded, particularly with bags of powder, then that box weighs somewhere a little over 50,000 pounds. But when you work and get paid by the hour, Then why not work harder instead of smarter?

You can have $100, or what’s in the box
@rogerpenske2411 Жыл бұрын
I don’t know why they would try to pull them out hooked together? Empty, those boxes are a little over 1000 pounds each. That is exactly what I do, Magoo. I used to pull those containers from Korean Mafia HQ orders in Los Angeles to the Korean mafia in Phoenix. Occasionally I would go to the port. For the last year,I have been doing local pick ups and deliveries around Phoenix
@rogerpenske2411 Жыл бұрын
I am also surprised that the containers were not rigged at all four corners! I’ve seen enough heavy equipment moved by Crane, and that is how it is always done. It probably would’ve eliminated all this monkey business
@MarkClayMcGowan Жыл бұрын
Because they're not using cranes to actually lift them up because they can't get a crane in there. They have to drag them from the ends and hooking up on the bottom makes them easier to drag through the dirt. The hooks, swivels, clevises, and cables are VERY heavy and someone would have to get them up there, which is dangerous and time consuming. Separating the containers is difficult and time consuming, as you saw. It also creates more safety issues.
@rogerpenske2411 Жыл бұрын
@@MarkClayMcGowan Sky Crane. In a different life back in Chicago, I was on several jobs that used to sky crane to drop heating and air conditioning units and the roofs of buildings. But that’s probably far more expensive than the insurance company I guess makes the decisions
@MarkClayMcGowan Жыл бұрын
The contractors bid on these jobs. Once that is done, the railroad is out of the loop. It would be impossible to use a helicopter in this terrain, or on damaged cars with shifted loads and doors that cannot be secured. The containers could buckle at any time, which I have seen happen when cranes were able to get to the site.
@sptraxide Жыл бұрын
I hope they have 24 hour security on site now.
@MarkClayMcGowan Жыл бұрын
They do not. With things stacked the way they are now, the vandals would have a hard time getting to the powdered milk! The Hulcher guys finished their job that evening. Now it's the scrappers' turn!
