Wonderful Video Mark! Very informative and its really helping me with my story! Also, I have an idea for maybe your next or one of your future videos. In your mastering manga book 1 I believe, not sure if it was 2, but you went over briefly the differences between wet and dry hair. I think maybe in one of your next videos you might want to show us how to apply the wetted hair effect to a few different hairstyles. I know I would find it very helpful, so maybe you'll consider it. Best of luck Mark! ------Sam

I found this video both super helpful and inspiring. I've actually been struggling a bit with my motivation for art in general. I've recently started taking a college drawing course and while drawing glass bottles and reflective metal surfaces and experimenting with every drawing material on the face of the earth (except white gouache, you'd be sad to hear) is both useful and interesting to me, it slowly started to drain me of my enthusiasm and felt more and more like a chore than a passion. I started second-guessing both myself and my passion for art. Then this video came out and like proverbial clouds parting to reveal the sunlight, I found inspiration again. This really helped, Mark. Thank you.

Mark, I want to thank you for making these amazingly helpful videos. I remember when I first stumbled across your videos.. Probably around 2010/2011, I loved to draw, but I wasn't great at it. When I started watching your videos, my art skills improved greatly. You were a big influence on my art and I used to want to send you a video of me drawing and I'd have this story on the drawing and it would be AWESOME. (As you have probably noticed, it never happened. But I thought about doing it multiple times.) I have kept all of your tips tucked away in the corner of my brain. Recently, I have decided I want to write my own comic,and lo and behold, you have just what I'm looking for. It never fails. Thank you for doing what you do. Hey, maybe one day we will be competitors in the manga industry! (Probably not.. I still have a lot to learn. But it's a cool thought. )

I like any video you post. They are helpful and informative. I'm getting into creating manga and these videos help me out a lot. Recently I sat down and drawn a long with your videos. It is amazing how much I improved by doing so. For me watching, hearing, and doing is the way I learn. You provide different ways to tackle how to draw something whether if there are guidelines or not. At work when I was bored I took scrap piece a paper and start out drawing male manga eyes. From there I could draw facial features. Finally found the right facial features for a character and it helped me figure out a great way to design facial features for a character. One thing about art in general it is all about trial and error. Finding what works. Thank you for all you do Mark. You are an inspiration! :)

One of the things I aim for in writing/ comics is time management, forgive me for I have never had the chance to get my paws on one of your books but from what I can see you do this perfectly. Over time (on the covers at least) Brody from training etc goes from being quite lanky to muscular, showing how throughout the books he slowly build up to that point, also another example being the changing of hair styles/ length. I love your work and that you willing to help others. Mark, your advise would also be appreciated; Currently I'm a high school senior with two years plus this current year until I finish, and as much as I love drawing I have that fear of the unknown, their are many talented artists out there much better than I who can't make a living as an Artist, even after having spending thousands on an Art school/ courses. I also have a problem with consistency, my style changes and my characters sometimes look unfamiliar, I don't want to rely on giving them all ludicrous features just so they can be recognised. Do you have an advice? How did you manage with anxiety like this?
@markcrilley9 жыл бұрын
Jenna South Thank you Jenna! If you're still in high school I'd say you shouldn't get too stressed about what your job is going to be right now. I didn't begin supporting myself from my art until I was 29. There's no shame in having a "day job" and doing something else when you're starting out.

Oh my god such a big help, you put things in a great prespective and clarity :) I myself make comics for fun and actually I do a lot of things that you mention in this video to establish effect or mood or drama, but for you to explain it so thoroughly and to add reasoning as to why this works the way it works is very enlightening to me and helps me think in advance for my next panel format and P.O.V. decision. Thanks a ton!

Hello, hello, Mark! I've been watching your videos for years now, and I've learned so much from you! I've been wanting to make a bit more of an array of my characters, since most of mine look like clones. I love freckles, but I can't ever seem to get them right? I've only found one video about freckles and anime, and it was simply someone drawing them- sped up, hand covering the view, not very useful. If you have time, could you do a video about it (if you're able to, of course, since I don't know many people that can draw anime freckles).
