How to Get Started with LONG EXPOSURE Photography

In this week’s episode, we discuss how to get started with long exposure photography. Perhaps the best part about long exposure photography is that you're able to create something that doesn't exist in real life as you cannot see the impact that long exposures has on moving objects with your naked eye. And, the best part is that you don't have to rely on post-processing wizardry in order to create this, it's all done in camera, which I think is super cool!
In this video, I discuss the three main types of filters used for long exposure landscape photography and how best to apply them. The three main filters are Circular Polarizers, Neutral Density filters, and Graduated Neutral Density filters, but before you go slapping filters on the end of your lenses, there's a few steps that need to be completed from a settings perspective beforehand. Once you have your composition set and camera settings dialed in, now you can begin adding filters to your lens and this is where the real fun begins. I enjoy experimenting with different shutter speeds searching for different effects especially when photographing long exposure seascape scenes or really any scene with moving water.

Getting started with long exposures may seem a bit intimidating at first, but once you begin you'll quickly realize that it's much easier than you originally had thought.

A couple of months ago I started using the 6 stop, 10 stop, a couple of Grad filters and a polarizer from LeeFilters. I'm absolutely in love with this type of photography. And you can use them not only for long exposures. But the grads and the polirizer really lower the amount spent on the PC post-procesing. Many things are accomplished in-camera which is absolutely cool.

I am a 72 year old photographer....started when I was 9 years old. I got my first camera at 9 by collecting soda bottles from people's trash and trading them in for 2 cents a bottle until I had $5.20 to buy a Kodak 620 box camera. Then I would repeat the process to buy film and then again to get it developed. It was a slow process. Much of my photography is self taught from taking photos to color development before the current megapixel system. I have some equipment but no filters maybe you can help me before I die or get too old to go out and take photos. In any case I have enjoyed the photography process for many years and have seen tremendous change and I hope to be around to enjoy even more.

Almost the same story with me, 620 and 127 film TLR's and Box Cameras until I got my first SLR around 1973. Film developing is expensive so I mostly do digital but I still have my film cameras in case Godzilla blows out all the electronics with his EMP breath!

Hey Mark, first of all, I want to say that I really enjoy viewing your channel and the videos that you post. I'm currently attending school for a degree in professional photography, after 8 years in the US Navy and 21 years as a firefighter. 15 years ago, I started doing photography as a hobby, but 10 years ago is when I started taking it seriously. I've learned quite a bit and still am and I enjoy every bit of it. Hey 👋 Mark , I’m just entering the field of Landscape photography after being involved with Wedding and Portrait photography for many years part time;while working at Eastman Kodak as a Lab tech . I’m at the stage in my life that Landscape photography is what I want to be part of . I really enjoy 😊 your youtube videos . The way you presented the information regarding the art 🖼 of landscape . photography. My love of photography stared at 13 . My Brother gave a camera when we visited Niagara Falls . I set the camera on a wall ( had no tripod) overlooking the Falls at nighttime with color lights were shining on the American Falls from Canada 🇨🇦 side. The best feeling in landscape photography is getting out and enjoying your surroundings and the exploring! I love the sensation of searching for a composition. I started landscape photography a few years back when travelling in northern Spain. The landscapes just drew me in! Long exposures are surely an art form and they can really boost a scene. Whenever I am on location I look for at least 1 good long exposure with it being clouds, water, people etc. Anyway, great video Mark! keep up the good work.

You could call me a senior citizen photographer. Retired in my late sixties and became disabled. No problem, aside from having to give up golf and hiking. That's when my youngest daughter said she could remember when she was young that I always had a camera in my hand; the film kind. Got back into the hobby full throttle, purchased a Canon 80D, a new laptop for my Lr post processing, for which I then knew nothing. The laptop was Windows driven, ouch, hard to operate after all the Apple products I used in the past. Got it done though. Learned the basics of the camera, and now shoot in raw, and now starting to look at the filter system, especially for landscape, which we have here, where I live. I can get close to much of it because of having a four wheel pickup truck, and lots of forests around us. In short my ambition is to take the best pictures that I can learn to take. I put hours in every day watching videos, tutorials, and playing with my camera. Your videos have helped to supply me with one of my learning resources, as well as insightful tips. Thanks again for being there for me and all who are in need of good teachers. If you choose me, the filters will be put to use. I have the cheap screw on type now, and they haven't worked out the best for me. Was impressed with your video and the filter system. Looks much easier to employ while learning to use, and for the post finishing process. That's important to me.

I chuckled out loud at your comment about thinking the next long exposure will be better than the last...that's EXACTLY what's happened to me on so many occasions! I really like your observation that these photographs generate images that can never be seen 'live' in nature, which I think is why I enjoy taking long exposures so much. I first began my photography journey probably sometime around 1990 when I was given a little disposable film camera. I don't think I have any of those photos anymore, and to be honest, they were probably all garbage, but it sparked something in me, and I've had a bit of a passion for it ever since, though it hasn't always been at the forefront. Having taken up guitar during my teen years I spent all my pocket money on musical equipment, so photography took a back seat until sometime around the mid 2000's when I was given an Olympus ~10MP digital point and shoot. I went crazy taking photos of anything and everything, and then my daughter came along and photography took a back seat again until a few years ago when a dear old friend who had just reignited their own passion for photography gave me an entry level fixed lens Pentax digital camera and reignited my passion for it, too. I've since upgraded a few times and recently started taking it a little more seriously, taking in as much info on the topic as I can, but also trying to put it in to practice as often as I can.

Hello Mark, been a subscriber for quite some time. I've been an amateur photographer for most of my whole life, which is a 'long' time. I inherited my first camera back in the late 1950's, a Kodak Brownie 620 Camera. I was immediately hooked on photography. Got my first DSLR in 1969, a Minolta SRT 101, which I kept until 2017, when I passed it down to a family member that never experienced a film camera. I had never been able to pursue my true passion of photography until about 5 years ago when I retired. Nature & wildlife photography is what I mainly shoot. I do not have a filter kit which I would very much love to acquire. Whether I win or lose, I will continue to look forward to your informative, no nonsense KZbin tutorials. As a 72 year old novice photographer, I am always trying to learn from pros as yourself. Your video on long exposure was excellent! I hope all of your videos are as precise and easy to follow as this particular vieo. I have always been interested in photography but never really had the chance to really delve into the art. Now as a retiree I cannot get enough information into how to take specific photos like long exposure tecniques. As a visually impaired "photographer", I rely heavily on autofocus, butr I seem to get excellent results with the equipment I use; but editing and (even reading) is a challenge. Hi Mark, I have been watching your KZbin videos and I have learned so much from your tutorial. Thanks. However, I got into photography right after I had my 2 beautiful daughters in 2001. My first Nikon camera was the Nikon N75 with a 70-300mm Nikkor AF. I'm sure you already know that the Nikon N75 was a film inserted camera which was so great at the time for an entry level guy like me. I had so many shots of my two daughters and I never has a chance to do a selfie of myself or be in the photos. I came back into photography last year 2018 and finally realized my passion for Landscape/Seascape photography. Now I have a Nikon D850 and as you'll have noticed I am a great fan of Nikon products and their lenses. I have the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 wide lens which I am learning how to use efficiently. I found my DoF sweet spot according to your tutorial right around f/9 - f/11. Thank you for the info. I also have 2 other lenses, the Nikkor 70-200mm f/4 VR still learning how to use it and my camera came in a kit with the 55mm f/2.8 which is great and I barely use it with the exception of shooting products like beverage etc. I'll be attending NYFA 1-year Conservatory program starting next fall to better gain more photography techniques as I explore my full potential that can enrich my practice.

I got into photography around 6 years ago on a trip to Italy. I stumbled into an incredible (albeit, by accident) shot inside St. Peter's and have been trying to recreate that magic ever since. My photographic interests have evolved into landscape photography, almost exclusively (Sony A7rii). Living in an area that lacks a lot of unique natural features, I've had to become more creative in my technical/artistic approach. Long exposure photography is a technique that I'm attempting to implement with greater regularity. As I prepare for a shoot tomorrow evening, I was excited to see you address this topic in today's video. I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos, especially those dealing with the challenges associated with working regular hours and still trying to find time to build a portfolio. Hi Mark, I've been seriously doing photography for about a month. Before that I've always just shot pictures on my phone camera. Eventually the manual modes on my phone camera weren't enough and I spent about 6 months deciding on what to buy as a camera. Now, I shoot with the Canon Rebel T7i, and I've been loving it so far. I live on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, so nature/landscape photography has been a strong focus. I've always loved hiking and getting out into nature, and adding photography was an obvious next step. Videos like yours (as well as other content creators which talk about photography) have been the main inspiration for me pursuing this passion. Been taking photos for more than 40 years, using rangefinder, SLR, digital, and mirrorless. First time I saw filters like this was when my father had a Conklin set on his Minolta SLR. There is less need for them now, with bracketing and stacking, but the ND and polarizing filter should still be in everyone’s bag. I am enjoying your videos.

I have been photographing since I was a kid having started with film. I am a semi-professional in the sense that some of my income comes via photography or photography related activities. When I shoot for myself its usually wildlife and landscapes. I used to own good filters in my film days, don't really own anything decent now and most of my long exposure shots now are therefore dusk or night shots. Hello Mark. First, I want you to know how much I love the straight forwardness of your videos without the silliness that others seem to think is important. I started taking my photography to a more serious level about 5 years ago. I have been shooting wildlife, mainly birds but want to branch out with more landscape. I have been using lightroom for the past 3 years and do fairly well but your videos are helping me with a better understanding of Lightroom and more of the features it offers. I am shooting with Nikon's D-750 and D-850. My lens include 400mm f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, and 70-200 f2.8. I also have a 16mm prime but have struggled with it alot. Your videos have spurred me to give it another shot and look at post edit options. I love to travel and I can't learn enough fast enough.....I am so hooked.....lol. You are one of a couple of talented landscape photographers that really inspire me to keep growing my skills. And while I only have a simple A6000 with the two kit lenses so far, I really enjoy getting out and seeing the world when everyone else is asleep or at home enjoying their evenings and capturing those moments that really exemplifies the beauty of this world we live in. I guess I never knew what I was missing before that. I'm a beginner photographer shooting landscape and still watching your videos to get some tips and tutorial to improve it. And I love doing long exposure shots, slowing down my shutter and enjoying it. I have some cheap filters but I can still shoot long exposure shots and that's my dream! the nisi filters and holder. I hope someday I have those filters

Hi Mark, I was inspired to take up photography after my parents bought a T3i as a family camera and the praise form family and friends knowing they enjoyed the pictures i took was heart warming. At the end of the day photography is just a hobby but being able to capture moments of my life in the way I want and being able to look back at those photos and say "wow i took those" is truly irreplaceable. Long exposure photography is without doubt my favourite form of photography. The sense of true creativity you get when the image pops up on your camera's screen after the shot has been taken is so totally satisfying. Really enjoying your no nonsense clear cut videos. :-)

Love your Channel and Style Mark. I got into photography as a kid photographing the pigeons I raised. My Dad was an amateur photographer so he got me my first kodak point and shoot camera with 127 film. Catch was, I had to pay for my own developing, so a paper route was a real necessity. I lived in a small town where everyone knew everyone. Wish I would have capture more pictures of the People I delivered papers to. They were such wonderful people who were so eager to help out a young lad, especially in the winter. I've had my fareshare of hot chocolate! The whole experience hooked me for life. Just wish there would have been u-tube channels like yours available back then. That was nearly 60 years ago. Have more sophisticated cameras now and love photographing Nightscapes and Landscapes. Hey Mark, just wanted to say I absolutely love your channel! Its great how you can cover so many important topics in such a intuitive and informative way. I always walk away from your videos with something new to think about! As for my photography, its a bit hard to put into words why I picked us up as a hobby but if I had to summarise it in some way I'll say that its down to 2 things. Initially I picked up photography because I loved the idea that it allowed me to capture moments in time to keep forever. The more photos I took however, I started becoming more interested in what the human mind sees as aesthetic or beautiful. This has pushed me to practice more, learn more about composition so that I am not just capturing moments but capturing them in a way that elicits a positive response or invokes a particular emotion. The fact that some of my photos can do that is just something that I find to be really cool, and it makes me glad that I picked this up as a hobby!

I used to work on video games but fell in love with photography when I was editing my girlfriends modeling photos ( I have been using photoshop since 1997) I wanted to try my hand at taking my own images of her and I never looked back. : ) I can shoot anything but I have always been a nature lover and hiker and I live next to some of the most beautiful mountains in the United States so Landscape photography is my niche. I also have a simple method of mirroring my images in order to create fractal sacred geometry and faces hidden in my work. I Love taking long exposures of rivers. The texture and movement the water creates and how it moves the eye around the composition is my favorite. I am very excited to upgrade my equipment to Full Frame and use quality glass and filters. I have only used kit lenses and a polarizer for 6 years but feel I'm ready to make the investment. I can't wait to see the progression of my work once this happens! I've been away from photography for more than a decade but this year everything finally lined up. New camera arrived yesterday. Lens 1 was a week earlier. The astrophotography workshop is in two weeks and the trip to Badlands, Glacier, and Yellowstone is set for July 2020. You're videos have given me so many tips to use. Photography for me has always been a lingering desire in the back of my brain. In middle school I got a few weeks of playing with film cameras, unfortunately, the budget ran out so none of the students got to see the final prints. Fast forward around 15 years, I started a job at a construction company that desperately needed more photographs of their ongoing jobs. I volunteered and with some of my graduation money went all-in on the Sony a7 iii. Needless to say, I fell head over heels in love with it all. As someone who tends to be shy landscape photography is therapeutic, and a nice change of pace from my job site photos. While my skills still need massive improvement, I have started seeing the creep of knowledge appear in my photos. Compositions are improving and overall I understand more of how my camera functions. Tutorials online have been my primary knowledge base, so thank you for all the videos!

Hi Mark, really like the idea of people discussing why they got into photography. For me it was a complete accident, from hiking and climbing in the mountains I was disappointed by the lack of justice my phone was giving to the beauty I was seeing. So I bought a starter dslr and it’s spiralled from there. I definitely love long exposure, took a ten second exposure of waterfall on the weekend. Like you I love creating something that ordinarily wouldn’t exist.

Just traded in my Nikon F5. Killed me but I got rid of my darkroom years ago - color head enlarger, Leedal Stainless steel Sink with temperature control- and I knew I would never use that camera again. My journey in photography began at age 12 in Flushing Meadows NY at the 1963 Worlds fair while sitting in front of the Unisphere, watching many asians pass by me with their shiny 35mm cameras. I just had to have one. My parents bought me for my 13th birthday a Minoltina AL-S and from then on I was hooked. I set up a modest B&W darkroom in a corner of the basement and recall many hours developing my "darkroom Tan". I was Chief Photographer for my 1969 High School Yearbook and recall processing hundreds of photos for that publication, my gift to my high school classmates. That year I also won 2 Scholastic Photography awards for the Northeast region. As my high school photography teacher told me then, (who now is 93 with severe senility)"Son, one day your "Prints" will come!" Indeed photography has been a good friend to me, indulging me in recording artistically most of the phases of my life from the college protests of the late 60's, to raising a family and shooting their sporting events, to the present where I teach my residents at Yale graduate hospital residency program the fundamentals of Intra-Oral photography. I suspect that in my retirement years, God Willing, Photography will be there, stirring that inner creativity that resides in my soul. Hi Mark. I thoroughly enjoy your channel and your passion for photography. I started out when my father gave me a Kodak Instamatic 104 camera for my eighth birthday which used those old square flash cubes (I guess I've aged myself). It took my entire weekly allowance when I bought film and flashcubes. I would plan my photos very carefully because you only had a limited amount of shots on 126 film. Then I had to wait a week for my next allowance to afford the processing, which usually took another week at the local drug store. And Kodak called it an "Instamatic". It didn't matter when I picked up the envelope of photos that some were out of focus, or the flash cube didn't fire. They were like magic to a child of the sixties. I can still remember how I felt during the week I would wait for the prints to get developed. I would imagine when I took each photo, and try to visualize what they would actually look like when developed. How times have changed in the photography world. It seems that anticipation is losing its mystique in the digital age. We can immediately chimp our photos and delete the ones we don't like. We can fire off hundreds of photos at little cost, in seconds, where in the days of film, hundreds of photos would cost hundreds of dollars, take hours to shoot and take days to develop. There was little chance for redos. You got it the first time or you didn't, there was usually no going back. You had to trust your skills, your equipment and your imagination. I am seeing a trend rising in the photography world. I sense a slowing down in advanced photography as a counterpoint to the "Instamatic" camera phones we all carry. Fujifilm is a prime example with their retro, tactile cameras especially the new X-Pro 3 with its anti-chimping LCD. Camera companies with their "film" simulations. The melding of mirrorless and vintage lenses. The increasing interest in long exposure photography to name a few. As you noticed, I've been a photography enthusiast for a long time, but at this point my in my photography I desire to slow down from the current digital methods and become more methodical again. As a wise old ketchup commercial once said "Anticipation, it's making me wait".

Completely agree with you regarding the lack of a color cast. I picked up the V5 system a few years ago and have no "real" complaints. Maybe I now have a couple. I like the way the new holder is edged to make filter addition and removal easier. The new locking mechanism is a nice feature. Thanks for sharing.

I got in to photography about a month ago. Since then I have done two boudoir shoots, captured a great shot of lightning, and took my newborns photo for the world to see him for the first time. I am still learning and I don't know what my style is but I have plenty of time to figure it out. I currently have a canon sl2 with a kit lens and a zoom lenses that I bought used. This camera is amazing and has allowed me to show the world how I see it. Never in a million years did I think I would be good at anything like this. I just wish I picked it up while I was in Iraq and while I was in Afghanistan. Then I could have shown the world the beauty I was able to witness there.

i have been experimenting with long exposure photography for the last few months. it helps me to create an ethereal, or other-worldly look. it's kind of chancy, because if you set up and compose a shot, for say, 3 minutes, and something goes wrong, i have wasted 3 minutes. sometimes, it's no big deal, but if i have great lighting conditions, and the light is rapidly changing, the wasted time can become a big deal.

I started over 50 years ago it so easy to do great photos today than when I started taking pictures with my 120 roll film then to a canon 35mm then to canon F-1. Did a lot of black and white cheaper to developed yourself than getting them processed . Took photos had to wait to see what you got and it cost money more than today . I have so much fun taking photos today can take all I want and delete the ones I don't like . I love working with filters have to look into the ones you were using . Love to take pictures in morning and at night . What I like about taking pictures today is what you can learn on KZbin trying new things . Thanks for the great tips on taking long exposures. The computer and color grading is so much fun.

Mark Denney I love your videos. I have been watching them for the last couple of months on a regular basis. The largest thing I have learned from you is to take a step by step thoughtful approach to getting my landscape photos to look the way I want them to look. In other words, thinking it all through calmly. You have helped me with that! I have been taking pictures for a long time but over the last 2 years I have been making efforts to improve my photography. Lately I have been photographing water falls. I have a filter and have encountered all that you mentioned the blue cast, but also an X pattern. So I am shopping. This NiSi system seems really neat! Thank you for the video as always!!

I found long expo photography is my favourite type, for some of the reasons you describe, especially in trying to achieve minimalist, fine art type images. I too use a NiSi V5 system, but with cheaper resin filters, while I save for the real deal, and have to correct colour casts in post by using a custom white balance, or set by usually shooting a frame into the sun, and selecting that. Hey Mark, George here. I'm one of the old farts that started photography way back some 60 years ago and quite by accident. My parents reminded me of this story before passing on. I was home around five years old playing with my toy cars one night and decided I needed a garage to put then in. The next day while going to school I found a box in a neighbor's trash can that looked about the size I wanted so I hid it until I returned home later. That night I looked at the box and disassembled then reassembled it and put it aside until later. When my dad came home he noticed the box and asked where I got the camera. "What's a camera" I asked. He explained a few basic things and I was hooked on photography. Not professionally but as a hobby. I have to thank my mom for assisting in the costs. Although not used anymore, I still have his camera, (Argus 35mm Range Finder), and my "trash" find, (Kodak No.2A Brownie), on a shelf. It brings back good memories recalling that time in my life. When did you get into photography? Almost forgot. Please add me to the list of possible filter winners.

Mark, you're amazing at explaining anything in your videos. I've been doing LE photography for a few years and 2 years ago I switched to square filters. Not knowing what to purchase, I have a mix of Haida and Nisi filters but nothing very elaborate as the price is a bit steep. I struggle w/ using them a lot since the setup can be daunting and even though I have a very patient and supportive spouse, I become very self conscious of the time it takes to setup a LE photo. All I have right now is 3 stop Graduated filter and a 11 stop Filter w/ a Nisi holder system. You along w/ Nigel Danson are my favorite when it comes to explaining things. Good job.

I have been interested in photography and about 3 or 4 years ago I started really getting into more in depth. I love shooting landscapes and nature images. I got a 10 stop ND filter (round screw in type) a few months ago and have loved experimenting with long exposures and have been amazed with the results. I'm a huge long exposure fan. I have done more nighttime long exposure shots but recently did some daytime LE shots of downtown Miami. I was quite impressed and will be doing more daytime LE.

My parents were portrait photographers for much of my childhood, from early on I was dragged along to help with their bigger wedding shoots, I typically did all the candid shots. I'm assuming the ones where I was like 12 years old were probably not that spectacular, but as time went on I got much, much better. In the end I decided I don't really care for photographing people, I much prefer landscape/nature shooting. I've been enjoying learning little tips and tricks from your videos, the more knowledge, the better.

Photography is my new hobby in retirement. Using a Nikon D3400 I’m just getting started. Recently took some 1 sec exposures of waterfalls in NH with just a polarizer filter and now I have the bug to do more with ND filters.
