I have. I am almost exclusively using a 256 GB ipad mini 6. I’m not a power user at all so the iPad is just enough and if I have any needs that the iPad can’t meet I just use my work laptop. So far it’s working great but I just wish it could eject hard drives and SSDs.

@@phillipbanes5484 for normal flash drives and stuff, I do that too. However, I have heard online that sometimes SSDs have issues when we do that using iPads and need to get reformatted and I have a 2Tera SSD that has everything that’s dear to me so I kinda don’t want to take the chance with it. Having a traditional eject option will make me more comfortable using it at least.

For me, I’m a lite user. Out office software is cloud based so, nothing I do is taxing or heavy like video editing. Until now, I never used iOS on anything but my iPhone. I have always been purely Windows. On a fluke I purchased a renewed iPad Pro 12.9 with the keyboard and it’s been an easy transition, a pleasant transition. Magnetic cover when traveling, Brydge Max+ makes it a laptop and a dock makes it a PC in the office. Again, documents, files etc, all on the cloud. 1 device replaced 3. All settings, places, favorites and else on 1 device in the same place I left them. Although I loved watching your prospective… I don’t feel you’re the typical user. You’re a power user and for most of us, we aren’t. Thanks to cloud software and storage, we don’t need the power but we do need the convenience, built quality, experience… and even a renewed iPad Pro 12.9 provides one hell of a great experience. 1 week in and I don’t miss windows for anything but office.

Circa 4:20 - Hmm... My iPad Pro 3rd Generation works fine from SSD's with the correct interface or adaptor. So does my iPad Air 5th Generation. In fact that capability is quite important for the Air because it doesn't have a lot of onboard storage.

This year, I invested in an iMac and iPad Air with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, this all replaced my old MacBook Pro. My needs aren’t complicated and don’t usually involved very heavy apps. I haven’t regretted my decision. My iPad is lighter and more convenient to carry around and takes up less space. Agreed ‘Files’ can be awkward, but that’s OK.

@@lameloball7644 I’d developed ‘laptop neck’ and it needed replacing anyway. I had had an iPad but replaced that when it was too old for updates. Mobility is restored by the iPad with keyboard; yes, the pencil is a toy. I’m not sure how lusting after Apple products has anything to do with intuition anyway!

I’ve been iPad only since 2014. When the big iPad Pro and the current Magic Keyboard came out and I got the pair, I’ve hardly ever thought about needing a Mac, or any lap/kesktop for that matter. And the IPad Mini is pretty damn handy also.

Hmm, interesting video. I suppose I’d put myself in the iPad only category, but for quite a different reason than you mentioned. For my work I have a Windows laptop issued to me by the company I work for and I do not want to use this for personal use. For many years I had a Windows desktop PC (yes, I liked to tinker a little), but in recent years I have found the iPad such a versatile and portable machine it really is my go-to device for pretty much anything! Since stage manager was introduced I can use it for personal admin tasks a lot more easily, play games, watch films, read books, draw things and take notes using the Apple Pencil, etc. Put me on a desert island where I wouldn’t need my laptop for work, I would definitely opt for the iPad!

Oh man Mark, what a timely video! I have been iPad out the door and Mac at my desk guy for 2 years. I work in an outside sales roll. I really love the iPad for a lot of reasons but it also frustrated me for the dumb downed apps and file management. No smart mailboxes to name one beef. My Mac book is a MBP 16" and I tried it as a mobile device but it was just too cumbersome (I do a lot of work in the vehicle). Considered trading both in and getting a 14" MBP. Then I went to our local Best Buy and while checking the 14"MBP out ended up checking out the 13" Air. Went home and pondered what I wanted to do and discovered the Air was on sale for $150 off. I now own the Air and I'm madly in love with it. It's going to make my work life so much simpler. That said, my iPad still has a place (working the floor at conventions) and won't be going anywhere. Cheers!

Before I obtained the replacement parts...new power switch and some upgrades...I rocked an iPad...alone... for months. My needs are too few and simple for even an iPad, to be honest. My 8th gen iPad and Magic Keyboard are all I need most of the time. Your videos got me using the Paperlike screen protector and my 1st gen Apple Pencil to great advantage. A laptop...even my cheap Linux laptop...is just too much for me to lug about with me. The iPad suffices. I'm glad to see you enjoying your one. Aloha.

I’m in a 4th category: iMac + iPad ! When I want to work, I use my 27 inches intel iMac. When I need portability, I use my 1st gen iPad Pro (they are both still working !) The MacBook is the worst of both world to me: screen AND keyboard way to small for work and no touch screen when I’m on the go.

Good point and one that doesn’t get mentioned enough. The keyboard on a MacBook (or any other laptop) is no match for a full sized keyboard that isn’t connected directly to the screen. Similarly an external mouse is easier to use than the trackpad. In many senses the most ergonomic method of using a MacBook is in clamshell mode with separate external keyboard, mouse & screen all adjusted on a desk to be ergonomically optimal.

I looked long a hard at a mini. I even bought a 256gb one in the Black Friday deal last year. I didn’t open it whilst pondering. Then I went into the Apple shop to play with one. About half on display had screen damage from the hot circuits, a few had white spots where little thumbs had been gripping them for gaming, the screen appearance wasn’t as well laid out - tiny icons and fonts. Finally the jelly scrolling was so obvious and annoying I decided to send my purchase back unopened. My idea was for taking notes with the pencil. I’m a lefty and somehow it didn’t work for me. My solution? Use a nice rollerball (black, red, and blue) on the fantastic Oxford polished paper, take a PDF and file it into my system for when I don’t have my loose leaf file system available. I’m a ‘printer’ rather than joined up writer and an engineer. My notes are very neat and everyone can read them, which is what really matters. For me the extra size, screen quality and pro motion of the iPad Pro beats the mini to a pulp. I also use an iPhone 13 Pro for filming and dictating rough drafts too. That’s a brilliant tool.

I could have almost wrote the script for this video. I spend 90% of my time on an iPad Pro, but Some things are just easier on a Mac like file management, multi tasking, and creating new spreadsheets in Numbers. BTW making movies with the pencil in Luma Fusion is pretty intuitive and you can work off an external drive if you can plug into power at the same time.

I’m a ‘both camps’ user. I use my Mac and iPad for all sorts if things but the one thing keeping me from going iPad only is how Lightroom manages files. If I could store locally (external SSD) and not have to default to cloud, then I’d probably only use Lightroom Classic for a few specific edits. However, I’m using the MBP for importing and storing photos, then syncing smart previews to the cloud to edit on the iPad. Then it’s back to the MBP to export - what a faff. If you could have local file management in Lr CC (I know - the clue is in the name!) then I’d be iPad editing all the way……

This year I bought an iPad Mini and went back to thinking of the iPad as a tablet and not a “laptop replacement”. I tried for a couple of years to move away from my MacBook. I even put the MB in a drawer, added a Magic Keyboard and used an iPad Pro 2018 as my daily driver, but in the end I just couldn’t take the undercurrent of frustration and disconnect. Now I am much happier using the iPad Mini for email, calendaring, watching videos, reading books, listening to audiobooks, drawing, journaling, and some on the go content editing / creating. And when I want to work efficiently and effectively, I reach for the MB, get the job done and get on with life. I want and wanted the iPad to be my all-in-one, but as you said, “It’s not there yet.”

I used a IPad mini 4 cellular under the $20 AT&T unlimited tablet plan for a year. I used Google voice and the IPad could easily receive texting as well. I used ear pods when I wanted a private conversation, however texting was used mostly. Under that plan, 10gb hotspot came with it and that was handy. It’s really an inexpensive setup, so good that my daughter is using the IPad with the same plan while at college. The whole bill comes to $23.46 after taxes/fees and she can easily afford that.

I fall into camp Ellis. Currently using a nearly 10 yr old MacBook Pro. The battery started swelling a few years ago which killed the built in trackpad. I have primarily used it as desktop only for the last few years with a separate keyboard and trackpad. I also have a second generation 12.9” iPad Pro that I occasionally use for work, filling out Adobe forms and creating damage diagrams to note condition problems for damaged artwork. I’m debating about getting a Mac Studio vs a new MacBook Pro. I can get more bang for my buck if I go with a true desktop system that has a better port selection and continue to use the old iPad as I have been. Will also use it to check email and for simple word docs. Can always upgrade on a future iPad. NOTE: I often forget to charge my iPad!

But. now all singing and dancing with the whole setup but still rely on my Wacom tablet and trackpad as I have each tool en either hand, I am left handed with the Wacom pen and right handed with the trackpad. All the kit now working together Mac, monitor, iPad and iPhone. Use the iPad only when out and about seeing clients and on the move. Took me a wile to set up a file and folder system on my iPad that I can work with, got there in the end, client folders and examples of there work in them, then folders for other private information.

Went on a trip a number of months back. Found that I absolutely can not go iPad-only. However, a lighter MacBook might help...thus shopping for a MacBook Air. And also considering a downsize of my iPad Air to a Mini. For my use, making travel arrangements and the like, I find the iPad is still limited. Time and again, I would pull out the 16" MacBook M1 Pro that I had with me. Yet, I really did not need its full power on my trip either.

There’s another category that for understandable reasons, content creators forget: you’re someone who is given a laptop by work, but need a personal device. That’s me: I have a heavily managed Thinkpad from work, and that’s where work related stuff lives. For me, an iPad is perfect because I can use it for personal documents, email, notes, bills, anything I want to keep distinct and it’s not so much that throwing it in a bag with my laptop feels excessive. The iPad is versatile enough that if I need to do something “serious” I don’t feel hobbled, and I can even plug into the same docking station I use for work if I need a larger screen for some reason. For those of us where work means a corporate device, iPad is amazing as a larger screen for our personal stuff.

Hi Mark. Big fan of your content! I have been a Mac user since just before my oldest child was born 22 years ago (my first Apple goes back to the IIe). Those first Macs were desktops. I didn't try my first MacBook until 3-4 years ago when I used a hand-me-down MacBook Air which I used to supplement my desktop Mac. I loved that experience so much I convinced myself that I could switch to a MacBook only lifestyle. I have owned iPads in the past, and from time to time I consider buying a new one, but all I could really do with it (for my use cases personally) would be to consume content. I have recently considered what it might be like to switch from my 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro back to an M3 powered desktop for my work and use an iPad for my leisure activities. But, my trusty M1 powered MacBook does everything I could ask of it from my work as a project manager in my home office or on the go. It handles a bit of gaming and of course just sitting on the sofa enjoying the work of my favorite KZbinrs. So to borrow an old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!". But, I still can't help thinking about it. haha

Excellent video, as always, mate! I, too, tried iPad Pro + magic keyboard as my sole mobile computing platform and just couldn't make it work. The hardware is great, but like you said, pro apps ain't there. Even Office apps like Word and Excel are just slimmed down versions of the MacOS/Windows versions. I'm in category 3. My M2 Air is my daily mobile machine while my M1 iPad Pro 12.9" has been demoted to content consumption. Until Apple beefs up their pro apps -- something about which I grow increasingly skeptical -- I expect my situation to continue as is.

I find Microsoft Office almost unusable on the iPad. Sure you can read files you’ve been sent but not edit them. Especially if (like me) you’re a “power-user” of Microsoft Office, I develop macros and toolbar extensions to Word and Excel, the full version on a Mac is essential. For some steps in developing User Interface enhancements it’s necessary to use a Windows PC. Even fairly intensive every day editing, formatting and proof reading is too much for the iPad - the full (Mac or Windows) versions of Office are essential. Also it’s worth noting that Microsoft’s own “web based” versions of Office are so parred back as to be both difficult & frustrating to use).

I use my iPad as a laptop since I use an iMac. It’s only times I need to do something ultra serious do I rely on the Mac. Everything else is done on iPad quite comfortably. iPads are just in this weird transition stage for now. On the one hand a 64gb entry level iPad is a great casual machine, while the M1 variants have the power to do more. But often apps are designed to run on both types of iPad

I have an iPad Pro and I love having it with goodnotes, procreate, watching movies and if I didn't see the differnce between 60 and 120 hz - An iPad Air would be more than enough for me, too. But sometimes I wish a had a MacBook, too, for things like Powerpoint or Word, which are much more functional than the iPads version 😅.

Definitely in the iPad & iMac camp. I use the Intel 27” 5k iMac for photo editing and storage (1TB internal SSD plus larger external SSD). Compared to this my 11” iPad Pro has too small a screen. Plus the Lightroom interface is nowhere near as good on the iPad as LrC is on the iMac. I agree with you on both file system and multitasking the iMac wins there hands down. The iPad wins in portability, reading emails, content consumption (KZbin), note taking, web browsing. But I’d rather respond to emails (especially where attachments are involved) on the iMac. I use Microsoft Office extensively here too the iPad version is poor compared to the Mac version so no contest there. Note I do not have a MacBook. Controversial thought - with a decent iPad and a good desktop who needs a laptop?

I feel validated after this video! I’m 2k in on a cellular 1TB 12.9 pro with pencil and Magic Keyboard etc. 1. Files was awful, I couldn’t even copy files from iCloud Drive to iPad hard drive. 2. Excel had terrible lag on basic spreadsheets 3. External support was also pretty awful and had loads of issues doing the basics like movie and resizing windows etc. I’ve gifted it to my wife on basis she lets me get a new 14 inch pro.. I bought a studio display for this iPad so I’ve really given it a try and I’m just massively disappointed and out of pocket 🤦‍♂️

I have just bought a Magic Keyboard and paired it to my 2018 iPad Pro which is still going strong. By complete chance I got a deal on a slightly damaged one(was only £60). The full price however is insane!! A M1 iPad Pro and a Magic Keyboard was going to be something ridiculous… I completely agree with you though. For years i had the Smart Folio case. My iPad Pro has almost replaced my MacBook Pro but for some things the Mac is where I go. I have used OS X since I was given my first mac in 2003. Writing documents for example, power point etc are unfortunately a big part of my job. It will be interesting to see how I go with a Magic Keyboard setup. If I can make it work for support and remote access it will be a game changer for me because the iPad equivalent until recently have sucked. I think I will always have both. I do feel no need to upgrade my 2016 MacBook Pro now because I feel like it can act as a desktop and my iPad can be my portable device.

🤔My journey to push iPad as a computer started two days ago. To be honest - 90% of my work could be done on iPad - with more or less compromises, but still. The problem is 10% of my work - comercially audio and video projects. The biggest gap is audio plugins - no iZotope for example. As for video editors, i don't know yet - for my hobby projects they are great (I assume), but for commercial projects? I probably could use iPad only, but for 90% of work (10% is for Mac / PC only). Switching for 100% would not be easy (not without sacrifices).

I‘m category 3, so macbook air m1 + ipad air 5 m1. BUT I just had my very first iPad for about 6 weeks now and I don‘t edit videos, only photos, images and do music, and I LOVE doing lots of stuff by hand. So at the moment I would say: I actually need both for my different work flows, but if I could only have one of those two devices, I would actually tend towards the iPad and I would try to make it work somehow. But then I would need another version of the iPad with at least 512 gb storage and a magic keyboard. And the iPad air with 512 gb + apple pencil + magic keyboard is actually quite a bit more expensive than my macbook air m1. Which is quite ridiculous. Just make macOS available on iPad. It can‘t be that difficult, I mean both devices in front of me use the same chipset. Best case: make it dual boot so you can choose between ipadOS and macOS. Or with the even more powerful chipsets that are available in the new ipads, let it run both OS at the same time.

Fact is, I don’t need it for work, I don’t need it for hobbies. So my iPad is my perfect companion for all the regular normal guy things I need it for (mainly entertainment). I could do that all with a macbook, but then i dont have the ipad (i use the 5th gen Air) for reading or surfing or light games. Its entertainment and portable work. Then i have my mac mini (m2 16gb 512) for anything more in depth. Handles any media i need to develop, can use it for more in depth research (when i need 20 to 30 tabs of research paperwork at a touch) and works perfect for that. Both good devices but since I have to use in Belgium eID for signatures with the government websites, no better solution than the OSX system. There is really no option to do this with an Ipad … (so hopefully somebody fixes this). But to the point again, using the OSX system is more a homecoming. The Ipad .. well since I’m more in meetings during day, this is my companion for creating notes and reading emails … so best of both worlds but every world has his device …

I just discovered using stage manager with an external monitor with Logitech K380 & Triathlon mouse on my iPad Pro. I am blown away at how powerful it is. It feels very capable with that combination. I was already using iPad Pro 95% of the time and cringing when I had to use a PC. The iPad Pro lead to me purchase my first Mac Mini this week. So you could say Apple lead me down the path with iPhone then iPad eventually iPad Pro. Then the light bulb moment why am I still using a windows PC? Had my Mac Mini for less than a week and it feels very much like the iPad Pro. In closing the iPad changed the way I do business to the point I was finally open to making the switch. Honestly with the set up I mentioned above the average user could use an iPad full time and be happy. The problem is the average user has no idea how capable an iPad Pro can be with the right peripherals.

The Mac (currently a new M2 Air 15), the iPad (currently Pro 11 (M2)) with magic keyboard and and iPhone (currently the 15 Pro Max) are so good together. Each is indispensable in its own right. The iPhone as the pocket device, the iPad as my all-rounder (reader - newspaper, magazine apps, books, papers, the best browser experience, email responder, annotater, small daily driver for on the go...) and the exquisite Macbook air 15 (longform writing, research,...)... what an excellent time for tech.. and yes..
