I'm still using my 2017, 27" iMac, and love the fact that it allows me to upgrade the RAM myself through a slot in the back. Apple will never bring that feature back, and since it's still going strong, I'm holding on to this model. I also like the classic design better than the newer generation. Same, I've made sure I bought the last iMac from the Intel Generation which you can bump to up to 128gb Ram. In my line of work RAM memory is essential, and even the fastest new iMac doesn't really cut it. It's mind boggling Apple is not thinking about us when making new iMacs, been using them for almost 20 years but in the future I will only be able to use the Studio or Pro, which comes with a pretty hefty tag.

Totally agree! I wasn't sold on the new design and certainly not the colours. I'm writing this on a classic 27" iMac like yours of which I still love the design. Mine has screen burn in. I am giving it away to family. It was great but it can't be slaved as a monitor. So it is useless at the end of its CPU life. I purchased a Samsung 5K monitor for about $400 USD and can link two computers to it (my laptop and PC). I would never buy the all in one again even though I loved it. I would prefer the M4 Mini at the price point, even with adding the $400 monitor and $200 for mouse and keyboard it comes in cheaper and you can use the monitor/mouse/keypad going forward. I also caught that comment when John T claimed it looked good on the Big screen, and I just laughed. For those of us who like the big layout, I just don't see parting with the iMac. I saw the M4 Mini and will have to look at the specs compared to the M4 iMac. I wondered if they were pushing us down the Studio Display pathway, but I don't think the Studio Display has some of the new features of the iMac screen (eg, camera that can readily display the table you are working on). If the specs on the Mac mini aren't as good as the most powerful iMac, well, I guess I will be waiting a while! At least I can still boot up Windows easily on the Intel iMac!

Nice to have 5K - but the 2.7K 1440 Asus 27 inch monitor works well for me and is Apple default monitor setting. Not a designer, not an editor - just consumer. If an upgrade is in order, just get another Mac Mini with more whatever . M2 works fine - btw 4K doesn't work well for accuracy in fonts. 5K or 2.7K, 1440, Display Port not HDMI.

An excellent assessment and very pertinent for me, so thanks for posting this review. I have a late 2014 iMac 27" with 5K retina display. It has worked faultlessly since I got it but can't update the OS any more, so I'm stuck on Mac OS Big Sur v.11.7.10. It has 16GB of RAM and a 3.2TB Fusion drive, and as we all know failure of the Fusion drive is a matter of when, not if. I didn't see a need to move to the new 24" iMac when it launched, as I really wanted the larger screen and a 5K display. Like an awful lot of Mac users, I was hoping Apple were going to announce something about a larger iMac ...... but sadly they didn't. I do need to replace my iMac so are considering either the M4 24" iMac, or the M4 Mac Mini and a 27" 5K Studio Display. I'm not sure if the extra £550 for the second option would really be worth it, so I'm going to have to visit an Apple retail outlet and compare the two side by side before making my final decision.

Great overview and video. It had been bugging me for a while that each time I wanted to replace the computer part of the iMac I had to scrap a good monitor., so when Apple decided to stop producing a 27 inch, well that firmed up my decision to go Mac mini. Still waiting to hear about an updated one, if only with the M4. The price reduction in Canada is only for the low end model, however if you want 4 ports and more cores then it's still the same price as before. So for me it's no to the iMac. It looks stunning though mine has its back to the wall, but a Mac mini will save me money in the long run and allow me to get either the same display with the studio display or try an ultra wide. Which is sad as my first Mac was the iBook but when it came to replace it, the iBook had been replaced by the MacBook Air at a high price. The iMac wasn't just the all in one, it was at first a good value computer. Now it's too expensive.

At Apple since i do some photo and video editing i was adviced to get a M4 mac mini and an external screen. The guy at the store even suggested i could use my old 27" as the external screen for the Mac mini...searching for details on the internet i discovered quickly that was not the case sadly for different reasons im sure you are aware of as well already ;) And now having both had suggestions for either a Macbook pro m4, or a M4 mac mini with a external screen, or an Imac M4 it seem i kind of end up at the same price whatever i DO get in the end. Around 2700-3300 EU here in Sweden. I do really love the idea of an imac though...and if it IS ok and totally fine for the editing i do in the next 10 years or so, it might be worth it for me to upgrade to one. If its stupid and il get more for my money buying a mac mini m4 and a good screen for the same price. That might be the way to go. What would you suggest :)? /Martin.

You guys all kill me. My 2011 21" iMac (with 32 GB Ram) is finally dying on me. I'm waiting on a Thunderbolt 2 cable so I can transfer out the last of my important files. Anytime I can get 14 years out of a computer, it was worth the investment. I'll get the M4 iMac, max it out on ram and processors, and away we go!

I'm waiting for a bigger model. I'll keep my current 27" for now.

What brand is that brown iPad cover? Is it leather? Does that brand have one for iPad mini 6? Can’t find one I like.

An M4 iMac Pro 27 inch with non reflective screen and upgradable memory/ram would be the holy grail

i've noticed than apple studio display has better quality screen than imac 24 (m3). it is especially visible when you look at both from the angle. apple sometimes make little improvements and dont say about them so maybe imac m4..
@hacorn962 ай бұрын
dude, iMac is so sleek, I had no idea it was 24 inch. damn. I'm not a customer or ever will be, but it sure is tempting.

for me i wish they would have a HDMI in so it can also be used as a monitor for a console as well... i also wish they had apple tv built in so it could be used as a tv... i know it has the app but from what I understand it doesn't work with the remote

Still got my 27" i7 (16gb video card)..... New one has no bootcamp and no 27" screen, so nope, not doing it. Just got a mint used M1 iMac today for the kid for $300 with 4 ports and touch id. Can't beat that! When they come out with a 27"+ imac again, I'll get one but otherwise, I already have my last imac :(

what year was your 27inch, and does it still run? I have a 2013 model , put Catalina on it, and it runs like crap. 8 gigs ram and can barely run safari. the os before works fine, but is insecure because apple stopped all security patches for it...

My only issue with the iMac is the size, just wish they'd do a 27 or even a 32in.

After the Mac Mini announcement it's interesting how the base model of the iMac has fewer cores by comparison.

The base 16gb model with 512gb storage (crap) in Aus will cost $2799 give or take, and the mac mini m4 with the same specs is $999. So if people want to go the apple route, you may as well save that $$1800 and buy a great big monitor to go with it and still have change. Yes the apple monitor is nice, but not large enough for that money. All base machines should be 1TB as well. I'm on the fence on getting one. If you're into gfx and video editing, then the M4 mini pro with 12 core cpu and 16gpu will still save you $600 toward a large monitor. Good to see they start at 16gb anyway, I never saw any imac in my Aus stores come with more than 8gb so I steered away.

The new iMac looks damn sexy BUT I'm still happy with my 2017, 27" iMac, which is still fast, reliable and allows me to upgrade the RAM myself via a slot in the back. If Apple ever brings out a larger screen iMac again, I will probably go for that to enjoy the much faster processors out there. Until then ......

Is the M4 IMac 60 Hz?
@Isengardtom2 ай бұрын
Yes - screen is 60Hz
@T101072 ай бұрын
@ I don’t mind 60 Hz as much on IMacs compared to touch devices, but I’d still rather get a Mac mini with a 120 Hz Oled monitor vs an iMac with a 60 Hz monitor. Especially at the price of the mac mini. Mac Mini - $599 + Apple Touch ID keyboard/mouse - $149/$79 = $827. $472 left over for a monitor.

I wish they'd do a 27" iMac, but mostly for my clients that want something bigger than 24 inches, and have only ever used iMacs, so they stuggle with Mac minis or laptops and monitor. I work with dozens of people don't understand that a monitor is not a computer that just happens to work with her laptop.

24 inch more than big enough , I’m stuck on a MacBook Pro 16 , 8 inches smaller is a LOT smaller , believe me !! ASD is £1500 alone and just a 27 inch .. iMac is an incredible bargain

It’s it worth spending the extra for a M4 or just get a M3 as the prices are dropping now and I can get a M3 for just over a grand now (£1049) is the M4 worth the extra £250ish quid???
@Jan961062 ай бұрын
I agree. I just got a Mac Air M3 15 inch at a reduced price because the M4's are coming soon. 16 RAM 512 SSD.

I think I will upgrade my Blue M1 to a green M4 with more memory and storage. I had 16GG of memory but made the mistake of only getting 256GB of storage and it’s starting to get a bit restrictive

I'm always amazed that folk regard the 16" macbook screen as absolutely fine, but completely lose it when asked to use a 24" iMac. Seriously, it's OK. You can work on it. You can also plug in a secondary display, or use an iPad. Yes, I'd buy a 27" version in a heartbeat, but it wouldn't be life changing. I think this M4 iMac lineup is broadly fine for 'normals'. * They should just ship it with the trackpad, and ditch the awful mouse. * The base model should have touch ID, as that's life changing. * There should be a way to get to at least one of the TB ports without peering round the back of the computer. * They should make a proper Pro iMac for all the design shops. Pro chip, dual OLED 120Hz, FaceID, all the fancy iPad Pro/macbook Pro bells and whistles. This is a bit niche, but they'll sell way more than the Mac Pro.

@paulwoodward8265 Different sizes for different situations. I like the portability of my 13" Macbook Air, but when I use it at home I plug it into a 28" 4K screen. My 6" iPhone screen is fine outside the house, but at home I'd rather browse and watch KZbin on my iPad. Nintendo Switch portable gaming is fun, but at home... docked to a 55" tv. My travel dildo is... oh nevermind.

I wanted a compact one. 20-21.5” like before. So, I may look at another Mac mini. Then I can have the screen size I want. Maybe I can use my 11” iPad. Hmm
