dear Eric .. i am speechless. simple but BEAUTIFUL.. u asked hopefully that we would like it?.. i could go whole day watching how u make it look so simple .. tQ tQ tQ.. if anyone can pull off drawing shadow in Lilac instead of the usual Grey, then Hail to U.. take care Eric. i hv subsribe 2 ur channel i am trying to learn drawing plan trees n coloring them as part of my therapeutic ASMR ..

I’m good with your blending technical for the tree itself but for its shadow, I have some issues. I would either stick to the same size circle or trace the outline of the tree and then put that under the paper, shift it in the opposite direction of the light source, and use that shape as the shape of the shadow. I might also add just a touch of shadow on the shaded side of the branches before blending to increase the texture and depth. As to the color of the shadow, I would simply darken the color of what ever the shadow falls upon, either by going over it one more time with the same color or a shade darker if and where the shadow is deep. Conifers and trees with dense foliage cast deeper more uniform and sharper shadows than deciduous trees and those with sparse open foliage which have a more dappled appearance. Also, obviously the length of the shadow has to be longer if the plant is taller and shorter if the plant is shorter. The shadows and reflections of other objects has to be taken into account as well. I’m not sure why you want to highlight the edge of your shadow as it’s edge never contacts the open air. Obviously, you could spend all day on the shadows and no architect, no matter how quickly they can draw, can afford to do that. So spending the additional time to make a good rendering is a function of the purpose and scale of the drawing and the budget that you are working with. I would definitely do it for your portfolio drawings.
