Friday 18 September 2009: in the afternoon the Massed Pipes and Drums Band is performing in the streets of the old heart of Arnhem. In the evening, about 7 pm they go in a slow march towards the Airborne square, to grace the real Market Garden Commemoration. You find everything about laying wreaths, speeches, national anthems of Poland, United Kingdom and The Netherlands (Mazurek Dabrowskiego, God save the queen, Wilhelmus), Dutch Hymn 293 Last Post, respectfull silence to the casualities and the reveille. The completion of the ceremony was at the Arnhem town hall, of which I taped the performance of the Massed Pipes and Drums Band.
Thanks to God for sending deliverance.
Thanks to those who lost their lives for the victory. Rest in peace!

Thank you for all you did, I lived in Nijmegen for 27 years, used to love to meet and hang out with the British and Canadian liberators. They gave us the ultimate sacrifice, to live our lives without having to speak German.

The problem was ...a cup of tea. In the face of unforseen heavy SS resistance, John Frost captured the north abutment of the Arnhem bridge and the British front unit from Nijmegen on stopped at the little town of Elst to drink tea and decided to stay the night. However, in this night the SS put dismantled tanks across the river, hastely reassembled them and captured the south abutment. Now, though only 10 km separated, the unit couldn't set free Frost anymore. Too sad to be true, but it is true.

Northern France was an easy surrender? The British and Canadian troops had to deal with fanatical SS troops in and around Caen. The quality of troops and level of resistance further West with the Americans was ultimately what you would style 'weak' resistance in comparison. Again, unofficial censoring by sensationalist US historians has downplayed this vital aspect of the fighting.

Sorry, Holland. We did all we could to liberate you but Arnhem was 'a bridge too far' for us. I hope, though, you respect the efforts that the Scottish troops put in to try and free you from the Nazi scum.

Operation Market-Garden was mission impossible! The Operation was all about time and luck, The Operations came very close to success, The British at Arnhem fought like lions and did everything that was asked of them, however the ground forces were delayed and failed to relieve them and the British were overrun by the SS. Success in Market-Garden would end the war in 1944.

@Orlik1946 Thanks Orlik and you're right. With this meeting regularly the three concerning national anthems are played, you can find them in this video series. That is, the Dutch, English and Polish anthem. I'm trying to learn the Polish anthem, but find the rponunciation a little hard Marsz, marsz, Dąbrowski, Z ziemi włoskiej do Polski, Za twoim przewodem Złaczym się z narodem. God bless Poland!

ah no, your right about the cup of tea, however there was no taking tanks apart and putting them back together again. the plan didn't work for a number of reasons too many to go in to here, I did my masters paper on the battle, so I know a bit about it.

@djnoonie Sorry that I can't really help you. It's simply played slower to stress the fact that it's a commemoration including of all people who sufferd or died. The slowness should stress the sadness. It might have sense to Google with the name of one of the pipes and drum bands mentioned in the thext box under the video and ask them.

Bagpipe music always makes me think of great heroism. And it was exactly that what the tommies, americans and polish showed! Btw: I think those pictures taking people in front of the band are pretty annoying!

Sorry, but I thought you're wrong. The SS put over lots of Königstigers with simple wooden rafts. First they did hold the Nijmegen with that tigers (and infantry) and when they lost it, they got new ones and aided the Arnhem bridge South bank German infantrymen. That stupid raft lenghtened the war and dis-superpowered Churchill, actually. Secret Service and the political use of it did fail as well, as the Ardennes Bulge in December 1944 showed. But it's easy slamming, in 2012, behind a computer
@jsharpe45
@jsharpe45 11 жыл бұрын
there were very few tigers in that battle, they did attack nijmegen with a kumph gorupe of panthers but the town was mostly defended by ss infantry. Quick action by the Germans and mistakes by the British resulted in frost being cut off at the bridge, and the rest is history. as I said I did my masters work on this battle so I am some what knowable on the subject.

Can i just say they stopped because they had no Infantry support,so the Armour at the front of the advance had to wait the night for the Infantry to get up to them.

I didn't I must admit, just did read some books and websites. So I did read about 35 tigers at Nijmegen. I alos did read the Market Garden was a too quickly developed scheme (amongst others Secret Service information was overlooked and they tried to avoid inundation risks by dropping most of the paras at the heaths instead of low meadows near the bridges) to pass the Ruhr area and keep Berlin out of Russian control.

All things said by anyone are true, in my opinion. After the easy surrender of Paris, Northern France and Belgium, the heavy SS resistance in NL was a blow. In such situation they often said that Patton would have solved the situation. The cut off of the 9,000 Britsh paras at the North Rhine Bank was bad luck, especially "Frost" but also the Oosterbeek branch, for instance the lost of the "Westerbouwing" spit of land, why the Polish forces hardly could cross the Rhine from the South bank.
