I have to say that driver material can make a huge difference in sound. Beryllium tweeters are really fast and have a great amount of resolution. My current speakers have a graphene carbon fiber cone for the mid and bass driver. They are super light and have fast transient response.

when i look at speaker distortion,its more of a guide or a reference as is all other specs,design/materials as well,but having the right room set up and equipment to bring em to life is more important in my experience.

Wait, isn’t distortion the measurement of the change due to symmetric or asymmetric (along with all the other types of distortion also being a measure of the difference between the actual source and the played/heard, right?). How would you calculate the difference from source/what’s played to what’s heard in a room that isn’t playing a source?

if you measure at 90dB and you move the mic half as close.. your spl is already 96 half that and 0.25meter ur at 102dB... (if using a pointsource at least) without creating the huge weird effects if you measure 1 cm away.. (witch would need a mic capable of handling insane spl's :) but helpfull video, ill take that in mind next time !

I lot of people try that technic and then reduce the level to not overload the mic. But then you are right back to where you started.

Would it be possible to take a measurement of just the room - with nothing playing - to get a baseline measure of the room noise and subtract that from distortion measurements of the speakers thus eliminating the background distortion?

You can't gate it out because there is no time arrival change. It is there as part of the signal. And I have made distortion measurements of just the room. And at those low levels there are variations. So it is hard to give it a set reading.

Great info Danny. In regards to crazy hyped claims .. It's comical in the car stereo world. Take a stroll through a local flea mkt and read the text on car audio products. It's criminal that companies twist terminology as to lead consumers whom may not want to understand just want performance and are being robbed. .
