I’ve been a collector for over 40 years. I’ve primarily been a baseball and hockey collector. About 25 years ago when I was making some decent money for the first time in my life, I started buying a ton of anything hockey. Big mistake since I’ve wasted thousands of dollars on stuff that I don’t want and have lost significant value. So for the last 10 years I’ve primarily focused on collecting 1 player in particular and other than a box here and there, that’s my focus and I don’t allow myself to get sidetracked

I just got to that point after buying at least a thousand dollars Wemby hunting.I went to a card show, and doubled my amount of Wembys for $100.I do realise that I did get other good cards, but I didn't get anything great.I may have gotten one $100 card besides the Wembys.Pack buying isn't worth it anymore, because there is no competition between companies, all there is, is Panini, and they know they don't have to give us any value, because they have no competition to deal with.

I bought a pack yesterday pretty confident I'd hit the auto ( 1 per box) and sure enough, I did...a limited parallel rookie auto of my fave team no less. So if you study breaks, you have alot better chance....

I mentioned this on MidLife Sports Cards video last week. If a buyer evaluated every person’s collection, there would be a small % of cards that they would want. The rest of them would probably appeal to a niche collector or they are worthless. That’s why you can’t overthink it when you collect as you will never have the perfect collection that is 100% liquid. Try to diversify your collection and that way you can enjoy it. Have some GOATS in your collection so it gives you some value. The rest of your collection should be exactly what you want (specific era, prospecting, specific player) and don’t worry if it appeals to anyone else. If you can find that perfect combo of cards that will have long-term value and cards you just enjoy collecting, you’ll enjoy it more.

I’m an old school collector with 100,000 plus cards only a handful graded. I collect for the love of the sport the look and stats on the back of cards. Now a days it’s nothing but premium numbered, autos. Doesn’t seem anyone actually just loves to collect cards or for the love of the sport. It’s all big business with 20yr old kids ripping $400 packs on KZbin. Most of my cards are from the 70s tons and tons of HOFers but condition is a big factor as they were almost always cut bad, way off center etc. I go to shows with thousands of cards in top loaders I sell them $5 each with a big sign that says For The Love Of The Game. Can and will this mentality ever come back or are most folks just looking to make money. Most People today can tell you more about the limited foil parallel then the actual player and that makes me sad and at 60 yrs old obsolete.

And no one cares about the "commons" just the 50 variations of a rookie or anything to get people to part with their money. Cards also lost their distinct look. You can't tell what year cards are now as they look the same as last year or 10 years ago. I just collect vintage cards of the era when I was a kid. You must have a lot of fun looking at your collection.

You're right and you're wrong. It is big business and a lot of the younger guys are doing it for the money. However... It's all big business because somewhere at the end of the rainbow there's a man buying that card for his what... That's right, his collection. Ultimately there's people with big money that are buying the big cards once they have the opportunity. Or else none of it would be working the way it is.

Tip #3 is great. I am from Bay Area was at a small card show in Minnesota and found a dealer with 2 different raw Panini Curry rookies and nice raw Montana rookie. I probably overpaid in cash and trade by 10% but figured I'd never get a chance to get all those cards together in a single deal again. Plus, I still have upside potential with grading

Hardest lesson to learn - don't split hairs! Fortunately I have learned my lesson on that. Perfect example is this week - I paid $420 for a card that I was hoping to get for $350...I'd be a lot sadder about missing the card (and I probably never would have seen it again) than I am about spending the extra money to secure it. My biggest problem is one you talk about all the time - buying cards on release day and the first week - that has cost me a fortune, but I never learn on that - the FOMO is strong with that one!

This is all great advice and also, at the same time, back in the late 1980’s it would have been a great time to buy Michael Jordan cards. The 1950’s would have been a great time to buy Mickey Mantle cards. The industry has changed a ton since then and it will change a ton in the next 20, 30, 40 years. Everything he is saying is assuming that things will remain the same for the next few decades. At the end of the day, do things that make sense….to YOU. And enjoy the hobby with the rest of us!

I am a collector since the 1960s. You could buy Mantles in the early 1960s for a few dollars. Really. You could buy Jordans in the late 1980s for less than a dollar. The 86 Fleer basketball was a total flop when first released Card stores were practically giving them away. I think a wax box was about 10-15 dollars.

McNabb has more career Touchdowns than Drew Brees? He has more rushing touchdowns, that's a bout it. Brees easily has double the TD passed McNabb had. Brees played 20 years and regularly threw 30-40 touchdwons a season. McNabb played 11 season and averaged about 20 TD passes a season. It's not even close.

Oh, they’ve been massively overproduced now too. A difference from early ‘90’s are the limited run cards, but a negative difference is all the overproduction floods the market more now since much more of the product is being opened due to breaking. Stuff for the early’90’s there wasn’t demand for just never got opened, the equivalent stuff is getting opened and flooding market now.

Are certain key buyers accumulating disproportionately? And, from my conspiracy theory files, in a 1 billion+ business for Topps, how much of a slush fund would you need to prop up the market? 25 million?

SOME cards can definitely carry value over time. The most notable players, and the most iconic cards. But most cards go down. It's not unlike large cap vs small cap stocks, in the sense of risk profiles. Collecting is the backbone of the Hobby.

I started collecting a bit before 2020 after finding my dads old stash of un-ripped packs. Mostly from the junk wax era but i fell in love with opening. Unfortunately I bought blaster after blaster and bought a bunch of singles off eBay of my favorite teams players in different parallels, inserts, etc. but if I could start all over again I’d save and invest that money into more quality cards of those guys instead of quantity.

Great points in this video, basically the goats will hold value over time. Most other players just get forgotten unfortunately. You should always collect what you like of course just don’t expect it to go up in value just because it’s meaningful to you.

Small time collector/flipper. I looked at my PC cards and said why not list these cards at a premium price. 30% over my cost... If it sells it sells, if not it stays. I have a rare auto for a player from a championship team. I listed it for $149, cost was $45. Have had several offers over double my cost, but have held it so far..

I've gotten back into the hobby over the last 2 years or so. and just recently kind of zeroed in on what i want to collect Cal ripken was always my favorite player growing up so anything of his i'm interested and on the flip side i'm an O's fan and really like the look of Bowman chrome so i'm collecting Baltimore prospects. I go after low serial on card auto parallels if they pan out and turn into stars then great but if not i really don't have a ton invested in each card. Really just started with this kind of collecting strategy this year so i missed out on the Gunner and Adley hysteria. i did splurge on a few Holliday's though.

@@MarketMovers Everyone priced using the Beckett guide so they were accurate because that is how pricing was done. Beckett prices were set by Dr Beckett by having collectors feed him their current sales. They did not move much on a monthly basis.

Absolutely phenomenal video! It might be interesting to do a data dive into a larger group of premiere athletes to see which fall into that top of the pyramid where the cards hold or go up in value. I know you listed the obvious ones but I’d be curious what we’d see for people like Shaq, Barkley, Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, Peyton Manning, Roger Clemens, etc. etc. Those are just some examples but it would be helpful to know the athletes that can hold or increase value long term compared to those that have or will continue to decline. This is a great video though!!

If you can just build the discipline to save up your money and buy surefire generational greats already midway through a guaranteed HOF career (as close to guaranteed as it gets at least), you almost certainly will not lose money, and will probably make money long term. Players like Judge, Ohtani, Mookie etc. Those guys are almost guaranteed HOFers and they're the best of the best from this generation. Yes it might cost you $5,000 to buy a good card graded really well, but I'd rather save up for however long that takes than settle for buying the mass overprinted stuff of someone like Elly for example

A fair point and well met. However, Judge and Ohtani were once in the status of Elly... And Elly could be the next one up. Will he be? I have no clue. Might he be? Sure. Speculation on the new guys is the biggest gamble of them all, and the vast majority of the time it doesn't work out. Like my 401(k), I distribute my financial choices in cards into different categories. Some money into blue chip players and cards, some money into midcap type stuff, and some into wild speculation of potential breakouts. It's fun, and I have done alright with it!

Hi there. 1st time commenting here. Got an openion question for you. I am not a reseller of the cards I am asking about but a buy and vault for min 10 years type of collector. I collect MJ gem mint graded cards and have amassed about 650 slabs. Early on, I chose to collect the lower tier gem mint base and inserts of his 90's cards when he was playing with the Bulls. These cards cost me on an average of $100. They have risen in book value. At one point, we must have an end game move for all collections so I purchased these cards with that in mind. I wonder if I keep this collection in a more accesible to the general public cheaper Jordan gem slabes, or at one point sell all and purchase a hand full of much higher tier/grade inserts or RC cards of his. What's your openion on this matter if you wanted to buy and hold for a minimum of 10 years? I appriciate hearing your openion. Dont FOMO buy I agree with. HOwever, at fanatics auction last night I think I FOMO bought a Kaitlen Clark draft fever card numbered out of /25 in a PSA 9. 1 of 3 and like 3 graded higher. I do think she will be a TOP tier player for many years in the WNBA. What do you think of my purchase ? I heard a respected sports broadcaster say he has never seen a single player as Clark make an impact on the sport they play from an audience and people watching then her.. I think I agree. I did not know the WNBA existed until clark showed up for the most part ?????

Demand for her is wild right now, partly is because there’s not nearly enough supply to meet it at the moment since WNBA cards haven’t come out yet. Personally the stuff I have (nothing rare talking PSA 10 base), I’ll be selling during first round of playoffs because I think that stuff’s gonna take a hit after her WNBA stuff available.

Almost 20 years ago I had a huge binder filled with MJ cards about 450 of them. Hurricane Katrina hit and I lost everything EXCEPT those Jordan Cards. Obviously had some money issues literally having to restart my life and sold them all to a guy for 600 bucks. Regret that transaction every single day though at the time I had no choice. Some of those cards by themselves are worth more than that now.

Good video as always. Only point which may be misinterpreted is that GOATs are always smart purchases - I’m paraphrasing. Jordan and Brady can - and have - gone down. Significantly at times as the COVID spike showed us. Hear too often: “Can’t go wrong buying Brady or Jordan!” Not true and gives the misconception that these are safe(r) investments.

The one tip u suggested I did not follow… narow and focus on a sport or player.. I did the opposite. I googled the top 10 players in all sports and if I recoconized there name (and some I did not) I started collecting them. So my start was to collect in all sporst top 10 all time with name recognition that I knew.. as time when by some of the unknown names I found were big in the hobby and started collecting them.. IE… stan musial, walter johnson, bull russell, etc...

Oh we are. A big difference is with the amount of breaking so much product is being opened that there’s no demand for 99% of the singles that are going to flood the market anyway. Back then, if there wasn’t current demand, it wasn’t getting opened and never did. That’s a big downside that comes along with the upside of the chase cards

I still consider myself old school. However, you must identify the definition of flipping. I went to a show, bought a card from an dealer by the main entrance and flipped it for 3x the $$$ at the end of the aisle. or... I bought a card at a show and flipped it 20 years later for 100x the $$$. If you don't flip cards, then you are intended to NEVER sell them. Hopefully, your grandkids will also pass up the family tree.... Assuming the player you like is a lock for Cooperstown and you bought a raw, base card of him for $17 (population report of 20,000 copies), lets say. I bought the same base card but graded by BGS Black Label for $500 (population report of 7 copies). What do you think our G-G-G-G-Grandson will flip it for? LOL

@@samhiniang8590 yea I’m sure the money is in graded cards lol but I don’t really have any cards I’d sell cuz it’s just my PC players .. so if they don’t like the cards they can do whatever with them cuz I’ll be gone haha

a certain player will bring a nice return, even on base cards. As for me, I only buy graded, portrait like, rookie cards. I don't like cards without the player's face clearly visible or cards that are over designed with graphics.

well said! Paul Skenes is a prime example, hes a pitcher for one, two he only has pitched a few months in the MLB...look at him now, hes getting rocked in the past few games. and to think, people were willing to pay 6 figures for his RC LOL his team prob wont even make the playoffs, it seemed obvious he was a train wreck from a mile away.

Rule #1 never buy during the season. Off season of any sport is better😊

Actually many cards hit low points during the season, for various reasons. The worst time to buy is right before the season, or right before/during the playoffs. Typically the best time is 6-8 weeks after a player is eliminated, and second best time is during midseason lulls (especially after a losing streak or during injuries).

i just love card collecting. i do try to buy autos and low numbered. not saying that matters.
