“We can’t go back.” Admission they don’t have the data to do neural net programming and are trying to figure out some way to use AI but right now are still stuck with human coding. This is a case study in good money after bad. Waymo people aren’t dumb, they see Tesla’s V13 and know that very soon they will have competition undercutting the Waymo prices by half or more, and Waymo is burning huge amounts of money at their current prices already. The rational thing would be to shut Waymo down now, nobody cares about Waymo having offered robo rides for four years. But instead Waymo is expanding, burning as much money as possible before going under because there are no possible positive things one might do with five billion dollars so might as well use it to preserve the jobs at Waymo a little bit longer and protect their egos from having to admit they failed just yet.

You can buy a robot dog with lidar for under $1k. I imagine Waymo has reduced their lidar cost significantly. I wonder about their cost structure. BYD + Waymo would be super low cost.
@tribalypredisposed10 күн бұрын
But fundamentally more sensors of more kinds is more expensive and takes more power for the sensors and compute which uses more electricity, right now their Waymo Driver uses 40% of the power of their taxi, and Tesla FSD uses two hundred watts. Add in the cost of maintaining the mapping needed for geofencing, and remote drivers for when the taxi needs help, and the cost of installing everything into an already manufactured car, and the cost of hand coding while Tesla uses a neural network to program, and there just is no way Waymo can compete on costs.

Waymo did 4m city rides in 2024, 1m miles a week by end of 2024. Say 50 million miles of city traffic in 2024. Tesla has 7 million vehicles recording video all over the world and feeding it into their AI model. Even if every Tesla only does 5000 miles a year, that is 35 billion miles a year. And they are doing it with vehicles people have paid for, with FSD subscriptions or upfront payments, when Waymo needs to buy the vehicles and recoup the cash from paid rides. It's not a fair fight, Tesla will solve self driving first. There is plenty of room for a second player in the self driving market, but Tesla is looking further ahead - real world AI in driving leads to real world AI in other human spaces - factories, homes. the model ports to the robot.
