What happened to Hitler's sinister private secretary, the head of the Nazi Party Chancellery Martin Bormann? Did he manage to escape from Berlin in May 1945 and live out the rest of his life in hiding in South America? This series will answer those questions.

No way he made it out of Berlin. He was hated by the Nazis just as much as the rest of the world. I bet his own mother would turn him in for a $5 reward. Without Hitler protecting him, his goose was cooked. Wouldn't be surprised to find out somebody he tried to break out with shot him in the back.

Forty one years ago I traveled throughout Paraguay. In the north-western part of the country I found the country to be remarkable in one particular respect. Most towns, populated by Spanish/Hispanic Paraguayans which were laid out with no apparent thought to town planning. Quite the norm for most Argentinian and Paraguayan towns and villages. Then there were the Teutonic influenced small towns and villages. The German influence, culture and language was unmistakable. Chalk and bloody cheese. I plan to visit there again before I die. You should too.

I concur. There is definitely a German influence in a number of South American countries. I've seen it myself. It's surprising to have met so many people with German surnames and obvious German ethnicity despite them speaking only Spanish. Also, a number of German ships and U-boats arrived in South America after the war whereas their crews simply melted into the local populations.

Riveting stuff - I have never forgotten the memory of my father being excited in the early 1960's at the news Bormann had been discovered in South America. And while he was not directly involved in the search, my father was in British Intelligence, so I expect his belief possibly to have been underpinned by information that was not common knowledge. All the best and THANK YOU Mark for this stunning series. Rob in Switzerland.

Dr. Heyde `s suspicious death is certainly an important clue in this fascinating story. Another interesting point not often mentioned is Bormann`s wealth. Fascinating. I recall that when Bormann's skull was "discovered", in a Berlin location that had been searched many times before and had undergone considerable redesign and rebuilding in the years since 1945; that the Bormann's skull contained a type of red clay not found in and around Berlin but was common in Paraguay.

@@jerryjeromehawkins1712 Agree entirely. Bormann would have been excellently prepared for ALL eventualities to smoothly move on to a new life far away from recognition or where he could be extradited. It's got some interesting things in there that have proven to be true, even if it is hurt by other things - such as his claim to have met Bormann at some point. An interesting postscript to this series might be a video on Bishop Alois Hudal, whose picture you briefly featured during this episode. His relationships with the two popes of the Nazi era - Pius XI & XII - were icy due to his 1937 book that was at odds with a papal encyclical that condemned Nazi ideology. He then tried to rally bishops from Austria and Germany to support the Anschluss, but he was sounded rebuffed (by a 90% vote against). If Bormann did turn to a ratline connected to Bishop Hudal, it would be the peak of irony, as the party chief was a chief backer of the Nazi’s Kirchenkampf against the Catholic Church. He lobbied for the execution of the bishop of Münster, Clemens August Graf von Galen, who publicly opposed the Kirchenkampf and the Aktion T4 campaign of forced euthanasia of “undesirables.” However, Hitler rejected this proposal, as they didn’t want to make von Galen a martyr.

If Eichmann, Barbie and the others made it out, Bormann would have made it too. He had both the resources and the ability to stay way below the radar, plus his 10 children who I'm sure he cared for deeply. If his wife died in 1946, there are now 10 small children, how did they fair, who took care of them and how well off were they taken care of , did any of them end up in South America? Bormann made it, I'm convinced of that and if that was his skull that was found, planting there and then a one in a billion chance it being found kind of makes you wonder.

I used to enjoy Charlton Heston narrating similar war stories. Ive been following you for a few years now and am getting the same enjoyment. Im just wondering if you have your "Q" clearance.

Whoever had the job, he must have gotten mighty tired of burying Borman and then having to dig him up a year or two later to move him to a different part of the world, repeating the process countless times.

Probably the same person who did likewise for the Red Baron ... dug him up four times, according to a video by Dr. Felton.

Von Leers was the one who took 11,000 blank Argentine passports from Argentina to Europe, he also carried 9,000 blank Identity Cards. The transfer was made in August 1944. The request for this documentation was made by Colonel Perón to the President of Argentina, General Farrell.

Thanks for mentioning the Farago book, Aftermath. I read it back in 1975. As I recall it got panned by the critics but I always thought at least in part that was due to critics giving Patton: Ordeal and Triumph a rough time since the movie with George C Scott was largely based on the book. I'm not sure what to make of Faragos claims but it made for an interesting read.

I am watching this series again... Very well done, Mr. Felton! Thank you! Of course he didn't die and escaped. He didn't want to die and so did many other people. The Jews, the Russians, the Americans, and the British. He was in charge of the Nazi Party billions, for God's sake! When Axmann saw his body, he was just resting (sleeping) after a long long walk through a burning Berlin. LOL Then he escaped and he lived in South America, like many other characters. After he died, somebody brought his scull back to Berlin. Somebody was probably pressuring somebody for some closure. Whatever happened to the money?!.. Also whatever happened to the Communist Party money in Russia, after 1991?!.. Same thing... It's gone!..
