What happened to Hitler's sinister private secretary, the head of the Nazi Party Chancellery Martin Bormann? Did he manage to escape from Berlin in May 1945 and live out the rest of his life in hiding in South America? This series will answer those questions.
Dr. Mark Felton FRHistS, FRSA is a well-known British historian, the author of 22 non-fiction books, including bestsellers 'Zero Night' and 'Castle of the Eagles', both currently being developed into movies in Hollywood. In addition to writing, Mark also appears regularly in television documentaries around the world, including on The History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, Quest, American Heroes Channel and RMC Decouverte. His books have formed the background to several TV and radio documentaries. More information about Mark can be found at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Fe...

As a young teenager in the early or mid-1970's I stumbled upon a stack of old Reader's Digests from 19599-1961, and I remember reading in one of the issues the story of Bormann's escape to Paraguay and his death in 1959. Seems to have been rather common knowledge at the time. I also remember the cock and bull story of his remains being found featured on the CBS Evening News with Uncle Walter. The question of the Paraguay soil came up at the time (1972). Glad you have revisited the whole story, it wrapped up several untidy lose ends that have been nagging at my mind for half a century. My compliments on the stellar historical work you produce on your excellent channel.

I was a teen in the 70's too and recall the the fact that it seemed to be common knowledge then regarding the fact that Bormann escaped to Paraguay, Again when his skull was "Found" I also recall the debate concerning the red soil. I certainly recall my Father commenting that it was all a cover up.

My father immigrated to Chicago from Germany years after the war. Interstate 94 that runs south of the city was called the Borman expressway after Frank Borman. My father always referred to it as the Martin Bormann expressway when I was a child. It it wasn't till years later that I found out my father really did have a sense of humor.

Mark, this has been a very interesting series on Bormann . I remember first hearing of Martin Bormann when I was 8 years old on holiday in the summer of 1965 at a guest house on the Isle of White. For at least two days a new sighting of Bormann was being discussed by my parents and other adults in the guest house. It was of great interest to them but they found it amusing that he kept being seen in so many places over the years since the war.

Excellent series. As friends of mine in the intelligence community, familiar with German Intelligence apparatus in the post-war through the early 60 eras, always maintained that there was an active government wide "conspiracy" to deny the Nazi past. You make a strong point about how there was a strong presence of former Nazis in the West German government, who were very interested in discouraging further interest in pursuing fugitive Nazis.

@samwise1790
@samwise1790 Жыл бұрын
@@nancymilawski1048 well, consider that generally for high ranking diplomats theres a preference or requirement for 'experience', which is intrinsically a proxy for age. So even those who might have been young low ranking staffers or functionaries in the war/late war/early post-war years would have been mentored by the 'experienced and qualified' high ranking nsdp members. So you kind of have a 'fruit of the poisoned tree' problem. Ideally youd want people born post 45 or 50, raised and educated in the de-nazified german state and schools to take their place, which almost by necessity means they'd have to be over 30 years old by that time, which puts you into the 70s and 80s for the fresh crop of untainted diplomatic corps. Though I agree in principle, it might have been better for the whole lot to have been denied ability to serve in diplomatic and higher government state function, at least from an ethical and justice perspective. But government's a messy business because of politics and the informal system of patronage and loyalty, not to mention the international politics of the cold war which saw the US turn a blind eye to many persons with unsavory pasts and presents if they felt it helped the current goal of competing with the soviet Union and containing the spread of communism. Though it does not justify it, we must remember that the grand goal st this time for the US and western allies was anti-communism, and the people who would have been both the most experienced and effective diplomats but also the most staunchly anti-communist would have been the former nsdp members of the former Nazi German state.

So explain how Bormann managed not to age in South America. The body found in Berlin was of a 45 year old man -- Bormann was born in 1900 -- hence he was 45 in 1945. So unless he found the fountain of youth -- this is all BS. All forensics done on the body showed it be of a 45 year old Martin Bormann !!! NO CONSPIRACY -- NO FAKING ANYTHING. He was killed or committed suicide in Berlin in 1945. Felton never even talks about that aspect of the aging of the body just some dental work that may or may not have been done by Dr. Blaschke. They had others dentists at Hitler's HQ -- but Felton conveniently ignores these things to fit his theories.

Mark, I will share now a story I heard from Otto Gunche who I came to know from the yearly war reunions that my Opa would take me to and then as an adult until his death. It was in 1985 during the summer at one of these reunions that the subject of Borman came up. Gunche was discussing his feelings about Borman and described him as a "fat wall fly" that was constantly in Hitlers ear stirring the pot. I had no idea at the time who Borman was and so I inquired. He went on a lengthy rant about Bormans antics during the war and how he would constantly interject his opinion when he had no real war experience or knowledge. After he was finished I asked what became of Borman. Gunche replied that the real question was where is he now, to which he went on to say that the U.S. was responsible for his demise and that he died in a south american shlthole where he belonged and that the skull found in 1972 was a operation by the BND/CIA to end the hunt for nazis who escaped justice. I was only 15 years old at the time so I didnt understand the fully what he was saying and he never said anything more about it and I didnt bring it up again. Now looking back and with my own research combined with your excellent presentation here, I can conclude that option 2 was the most likely scenario with this being an effort by the BND with the help of the CIA to aid in West Germanys rehabilitation in the eyes of the world that all of the high ranking nazis were accounted for and that this would put to bed any further attempts to give credibility to news articles about nazis escaping to South America.

This has been a very interesting series, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this piece of history. I'm inclined to believe Scenario 3 is most likely (Nazi sympathizers moved the body) since there seem to be a number of almost amateur-esq mistakes (granted, that's easy for me to say 50 years later after watching Mark's videos on the subject). One question, Mark mentions several times that Bormann's skull had the reddish soil on it, but he does not mention the rest of the skeleton having this same soil. Does anyone know if the rest of the skeleton had the reddish soil on it, and if not, what explanations there might be for the lack of the soil?

Mark, yet another great film, loving the work that you do…. Regarding the mystery surrounding Bormann, I can’t help but think, most governments couldn’t find their backside in a dark room with their hands tied behind their back so the conspiracy side of it just doesn’t fit with me (no matter how much I’d love to believe it!). Now if you’d said there could have been complete incompetence in the search of the burial site, I’d have been all over that….!! Fascinating and intriguing series. I'm inclined to support your third scenario. Just because by 1972, West Germany was largely absolved of its past. It was a member in good standing of NATO, the Common Market and the UN. It had even made things up with Israel, providing military aid, paying reparations and enjoying good diplomatic and trade relations. Finally it was hosting the summer Olympics that year. Any problems it had were domestic with the rise of left wing terrorism.

This is really increadable. The amount of research that Mark has done is amazing. I also find version 2 or 3 much more likely than version one, given the many surrounding facts. As a fourth version I could also imagine that the soviets were involved somehow. I always thought that it is very awkward that he actually died in Berlin in 1945, given all the sightings in South America. I never knew about the dental works and the clay on the skull. It makes me wonder how credible the sources of these findings are? It would be interessting to find out more about that. Would it not be possible with the backing of the Wiesenthal center, or another powerful Organisation to clarify this once and for all. There must be more evidence in South America to prove that he lived there.

If I'm the West German govt, it seems to me it would've been easier to just leave him buried in Paraguay, under some assumed name, unknown to the world, than to dig him up, transport the body back to Berlin, and then rebury him. The risk of someone talking, the risk of people seeing the reburial and saying something, is far greater than the risk of leaving the question open on whether he survived or not.

As a german archaeologist i can tell you it's generally difficult to compare historical evidence and archaeological features. Sometimes this works well together and you find the written sources fully supported. In most cases (though i can't give you an exact number or statistic, just around 25 years of field experience) the excavation of a site described precisely in other sources just raises further questions and/or lead to a new evaluation of the sources. We tend to look at the more simple reasons first (for example the impact of other construction activity on the site in the meantime - which could explain the movement of the corpses or the in Berlin unusual soil on Bormanns skull). In this case, some of the witnesses might have also remembered incorrectly. From a scientific point of view, these have a higher probability than the rather unusual, but more interesting explanations.
@muddeer2222
@muddeer2222 Жыл бұрын
Mr. Felton's conclusion, IMHO, is rather weak in this case, though he gave a fair treatment to both sides in the videos. I am not going to make a point-by-point argument, but I don't see the witnesses and the evidences supporting Mr. Felton's conclusion being any more reliable than those on the other side.
