Here is why him signing that 2nd contract was not a good trade off in the long term .. IMO we are talking about the 2nd contract that was the bigger mistake for JJ, and mostly Dak and his agent .. Its more about his Dallas Cowboys QB legacy, and how you can monetize this legacy short and long term .. If you win just one SB with the Dallas Cowboys, that one SB is worth more for a lifetime in endorsements and other things then winning 5 SB in New England or KC or anywhere else for that matter .. the endorsements alone would set you up life long after you retire, and just as important you are beloved and forever sketched in Dallas Cowboys history.. You would instantly become Dallas Cowboys royalty and you would be known as the guy who turned around the most storied franchise in all of sports. Also you would be known as the only QB in a string of many who was able to break the 30 year curse/drought and put thee Dallas Cowboys back on top where they belong ... That Star would shine bright once again .... Now instead you might end up being known as the guys who took all the money and ran and gave the fans nothing back in return ... This 2nd legacy will come with no life time endorsements - Now this was not Dak's words, it was his agents words but he repeated them in public. "I have an obligation to the other NFL QBs" - he didn't say I have an obligation to the Dallas Cowboys fans, or my teammates .. He said right or wrong I have an obligation to the other NFL QBs. That will be your new legacy. Look at what Ohtani did for the Dodgers, he deferred all his money with his contract to the future only with the understanding that the team would commit to getting and keeping the players they needed to win it all. And they did, and may have more to come. Now there is no cap in BB, so this is not an apples to apples comparison but the Dallas Cowboys life time endorsements would have made up for any discounts you may have taken in that 2nd contract for sure. Now there was no guarantees, but I wish him and his agent would of looked at the long term and bet more on taking less now, for the better shot at more later. There is no "QB market". There's a salaty cap and a QB cap allocation that doesn't change, has never changed and will never change. 12.5%. Go above that you start losing depth. 12.5% = $27 million per year. Not just for the starter either, but for the entire QB room. I would pay Dak $20 mill a year. Dak is making $60 mill a year. Want more than that? There's the door! I'll find someone in the draft to replace you. And the less great you are, the less interested you should be in going anywhere above 12.5% anyway, because you're the one who will be going out there with a hollow team getting embarrrassed every week.The lie, presumably coming from greedy agents and QBs, that there is a "QB market" dictating shit is crippling a lot of teams in the NFL now. Doesn't change the fact that Dak had a top five-top ten defense for three straight seasons with Dan Quinn as the DC, and that he did nothing with it. Just as he did nothing with Zeke's rookie year when he was the best RB in the NFL, nothing with Dez, Witten, Beasley, Cooper or Lamb. Or any receiver he has played with. In fact, whatever you give Dak, he will waste because he is a mediocre QB who can't read defenses, throw with anticipation or perform well in big games.
