Wow you do not know how much this have helped. Im from Haiti, I escape the earthquake in 2010 and lost almost everything. My mom was a photographer and videographer and she brought all the VHS tapes of our lives with her here in the US and just had them sitting there in the drawer collecting dust. We watch them on christmas but thats it. Now I can watch them and show my friends Haiti before all the earthquakes and my life as kid 😁😁😁😁

Ya it's super easy, once you get the hang of whatever capture software that comes with it. I did a whole "vlogging with a 20 year old camera" to really test out the camera and the software. Been using it almost all the time ever since going through all of our old stuff. It's great and a nice way to modernize these old memories. Thanks for watching. EDIT: Shooting with VHS is dope, I have to say as a creative authenticity that's totally coming back in style ;) Nice channel content by the way.

I have been a teacher att highschool in Sweden for decades and have just recently retired. I have tons of this stuff and it´s all on high 8. Sony Camcorder and high 8 whas state of the art at that time. The camera kept on running, in the 80:s and 90:s and so i have memories of my children, parents etc, but all the tapes have been just laying there. But now i can digitize the tapes and show them for family and friends! What is great padagogy? It´s a person with a great knowledge about a subject and who also has the will and capacity to make complicated things easy for other to understand. And man u really want to teach us something here. Hi Peder, what a great message to find here thank you so much! I honestly feel pretty strongly about this as well as everything I talk about on my channel. It comes from a place of both experience (been working as a professional filmmaker for damn, 16 years now?) but also from a place of authenticity. I really do feel like sharing these old videos with people who haven't seen them really is something special. It's not something I started to appreciate until I got older, but since kind of discovering it I felt it was an important element to share with anyone out there who may feel the same but doesn't have the knowledge or understanding how to do it. Anyway thanks so much again, your comment made my day for sure! Wish you the best in your retirement. You can use some of that time to find some select moments on these tapes and share them with those who'd love to see them. Best mate! -Mark

God... such nostalgia! I am 25 and my dad used to tape me and our family in the past. 1:02 The three cassettes seen here are Hi-8. The camera is a Hi-8 format, that can play back regular Video-8 tape but will only record to Hi-8 cassettes. VHS-C cassettes are slighltly shorter(not by much, though) but are deeper owing to the half-inch wide tape contained in them. A full-sized VHS tape dwarfs both types of cassette(though there is a cassette adaptor for VHS-C to play them in regular VHS machines).

there may be a slight exception in relation to copy copyright content. At least here in England you can make a safe copy of copyrighted items provided you own the original and that is just for security/preservation reasons. There are VHS films that are not available in digital form, I am talking about rare items like for example 'Breakdance Sensation' which VHS original tape comes at 100 dollars on Ebay. In that case I would feel more safe if I had a digital copy on my mac in case the original VHS would loose too much quality or would be damaged accidentally.

Absolutely, I definitely didn’t want to get into in this video, it was more just that FBI warning I remember at the beginning of every movie :). There is nothing preventing the transfer, just can’t distribute it in any commercial way as far i remember. Unauthorized duplication (to sell on the black market). I wanted digital copies of the ya altered Star Wars films where Darth’s Light saver is still a shade of red and not a pink tone from too much remastering :) Thanks for the comment, I think you have the longest name on KZbin! Great video. But one important tip you left out is that not all video output from a camera is the same in terms of quality. So on the camera you had in the video it seemed to also support S-Video it Super Video, and the adaptor you bought also seemed to support it. And since S-Video tends to be better than RCA it makes sense to try and use that method of video capture whenever possible. But note you will usually have to buy a separate S-Video cable to connect the camera to the adaptor.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 4 жыл бұрын
I kept it to the simplest common denominator, but you're right. S-VIDEO, i figured if one can understand the basics of this they might already know about S-VIDEO, I also don't have a cable to I didn't think it was that helpful to demo what I don't have. Great points though Jack.

lol, this is an oldie, i've done an updated one and youtube kept telling me how badly it was performing, but like this one...after a few weeks it starts to take off. There are better ones than this adaptor now, the Capture One specifically is what I upgraded to. Software on these might stop being supported (this one) so updated OS and kill support. The Capture One is self contained, captures it directly to SD or USB stick, de-interlaces it and gives you the most efficient settings so no software to deal with either. Just drag and drop, really has never been easier.

@@MarkHoltze Sadly mostly people who buy these are just uninformed, educating the uninformed is what the media world is all about, I write the wiki I spent over 2k GBP in R&D into this to make reference data and honestly no new devices under the 150-800USD total cost mark beat decode on a basic VCR. Ware as decode can be deployed for under 50 USD from scratch with a CX Card which is around 20 USD using any VCR with standard test points it's not complex nor expensive in fact it takes the need for understanding an TBC and using one in real time out of the picture, its 1 command capture 2 commands done anyone with a desktop and a free weekend can set it up it beats out the FA-310P and TBC-3000 witch are well 900-3k USD TBC units the thing decode shines on is damaged and shedding tapes witch TBC units dont really do much a good with in one run. Also this covers Video8 / Hi8 / BetaMax the list goes on potential wise. Now after the RF is captured decoded and video you don't need to keep it but then again 8TB of storage is only 120USD a unit with WD white label REDs inside the easy store units etc RF compressed is only 325MB/min with all signal data intact thanks to FLAC compression so 1 hour fits on a 25GB M-Disk even so total its 4 copy paste commands from capture to video and archival. All content is history so it's soul-crushing to see it defiled by the cheap consumer era when for a fraction of paying someone else to do it you can do it better than an 1000USD+ setup at home. The economics past 5 tapes make perfect sense and I would love to see you make a video on it. I will also say StaxRip and 1-2-3 QTGMC de-interlacing beats out eveything today thats a 3min setup if not less on windows but to present that on YT 1440x1080 and higher upscaling is needed SD video is just DOA in terms of YT processing lol.

Hey Mark! Any thoughts on whether it's better to play back (record) the video through the actual camcorder or through a VHS player using VHS cassette adaptor - from a quality standpoint?
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 4 жыл бұрын
I would go through the VCR personally if you can. Dedicated player vs a player/recorder (camera) but it won’t have an impact on quality directly. VCR might have cleaner play heads and better “tracking” options. Ultimately whatever is easiest for you :)

You should really have used S-Video cable instead of composite, Composite is a bottle neck for what's recorded on tape, Whether Video8, or Hi8 the signal recorded on tape is in Y/C format where Y is luma (black and white) and C is chroma (color). The camcorder takes those two signals and combine them into one signal called composite, this process results in slight loss of quality for convenience. The good news is some high end camcorders allows you to capture the native Y/C signal recorded on tape bypassing the low quality composite output (yellow RCA) by adding a S-Video socket that taps directly into that signal. The same thing applies to 8mm/Hi8 decks and VHS decks and camcorders.

Hey Mark, thanks for this very informative and well crafted video. I have a problem I was hoping you might be able to help me with. No matter how hard I try I cant get rid of all the overlaid digital stamps my VHS c camcorder produces. I have managed to turn off Date/Time, by changing the view mode to ‘Simple’ in the settings section which takes off the majority of the stamps, however, during playback Time elapsed, ‘TBC’ ad ‘SP’ remain visible destroying the aesthetic quality of my recordings. As far as I can tell no settings on my camera allow these stamps to be turned off, so I am wondering if there is anyway outside of the camera that i could bypass these stamps? someone spoke online of using a VHS C adaptor. Is this feasible? Thanks in advance for your time
@MarkHoltze

Hi Dripfeed, my pleasure. I’ve come to a point where I feel we shouldn’t leave these old formats dead in a closet. Too many important memories to share. Sounds totally like it’s a camera issue. If you can change them on the fly like that then it must be. Given it’s just a digital overlay, the actual vhs-C tapes should be clean. That should make getting a VHS-C adapter the solution. I use a VHS-C adapter as the old signal from my camera doesn’t play well with the adapter. You can find them on amazon pretty easily. Just make sure it’s a prime seller and read reviews. Lots of cheap knock offs out there made specifically to fleece people. Hope that helps! Good luck! Let me know if the problem persists and we’ll see what other options there are.

Anytime! Why I waste my time doing these videos is sharing info and the good vibes :) Yes unfortunately now you will need a VHS player. The setup is pretty simple: VHS with rca composite cables (red, yellow, white). Cables plug into the VIDEo and AUDIO “OUT” on the vhs and the other end to the video and audio IN on the adapter. Adapter has a USB cable that plugs into your computer. Install and load software and capture. I have a part 2 where I outline the record settings setup. But that’s a later step. VHS decks: consignment stores, eBay, garage sales, parents basement? Seems that lots of people have VHS put away so ask around before going and buying one. I’ve sound the same with film projectors. People keep these things and forget they have them. Good luck!

Here's something I found, If I dubbed from VHS to VHS, the resultant copy was okay to watch, but crap for dubbing to computer(digitising), BUT, if I dubbed from Video-8 or Hi-8 to VHS, I could use the VHS dub OR the Video-8 or Hi-8 tapes to get a good(reasonable) quality image on completion of the capture process. Rather odd, that! I have Cyberlink Power Director 8 and 14(both Ultra versions) and they really come into their own in editing video captured off tapes. They have a feature where you can convert 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9 without everyone in your video looking like they've raided the refridgerator, it's called CLPV. I've used it to great effect when converting old content I shot "many moons ago" on Video-8 and Hi-8 then dubbed to VHS before I had the computer technology I have now.

Mr Bat Man! It's an honour lol. I'm sure they do a pretty good job for you. It's also less time consuming, doing 10 tapes will probably take awhile, but it depends on how you value your time. If all you have are the tapes and that's all you plan on doing, might be an idea to go through the service .You save on time and buying the adapter, storage space etc. They'll probably put it all on a USB stick for you. Of course the total cost would be a factor and I can't speak to the actual quality as I've never used it, but I'm sure being a commercial product they do a good job. Hope that helps mate, good luck with your decision.
