Marking Its Territory - Let's Fix My 1968 Dodge Charger's Leaking Radiator

This is my 1968 Dodge Charger, which is affectionately known as Corndog after a silly off-road excursion involving a cop car and a hot case lunch. I've owned the Charger for over two years now, and bit by bit I've brought it up to snuff in various videos on the channel. The biggest issue for the last year has been a leaking radiator that I installed (with full knowledge that it leaked.) So today, I'm finally going to fix that - just in time to park the car for the rainy season. Typical.

I did the same as you, got sick of repairing the original radiator on my cuda, bought a 'stock appearing' one from a company that was recommended to me. It dropped right in, had to do a little drilling, but otherwise, perfect fit and awesome function. Got to enjoy my car all summer with no pissing of green stuff. Thanks for your vids.

Watching your videos has inspired me to change my philosophy with working on my classics. I'm used to fixing problems by replacing factory parts with aftermarket units. Recently I decided to buy an NOS rebuild kit to fix the starter in my '70 Ford F250 instead of gambling with reman garbage from the parts store.

Nothing is more disappointing than buying aftermarket parts that don't fit or worse - don't work. While there isn't a LOT of NOS parts out there, 9 times out of 10, you're better off seeking them out first.

I have commented before that my step dad had that car only it didnt have the stripe and had black seats. It had the white vinyl top and the cragers just like yours. O so many memories. I blew up my 65 lemans with a 326. And i was going to have to drive a 75 pea green rusted out maverick. For home coming. He handed me the keys to the charger and told me not to wreak it or get a ticket. Thank goodness that didnt happen. But almost got a ticket for drag racing on the way home. If you would have put a egg on the hood it would have cooked it. Man the memories. Thanks for them. Sadly i only have a picture of it with only half the car in it

One result of depression is complete lack of interest in doing the things you once enjoyed. My entire life has been Mopar oriented, but time, and lifestyle perhaps, often extracts a hefty toll. Unforeseen damage can be the result. Anyhow- thanks for sharing and I'm glad to have recently stumbled upon this channel. Your ability to blend Mopars with a subtle hint of AVE has certainly caught my interest. Common sense and simplicity goes a long way, I see nothing wrong with distributor points, vacuum advance, or drum brakes for that matter. The most dependable and highest milage Mopars I own still have both. But again, common sense is the most valuable in one's toolbox. Based on the size of your KZbin following, I doubt you'll read this. But that is not why I'm writing it- I write only to clear my own cobwebs. Mine worked off and on, if I drove it consistently it did, when sat to long and to reset the time, got a tic toc tac from a guy on eBay for $27 he said was sitting on a top shelf of his relatives automotive shop he was cleaning out and selling everything in a estate sale from a relative passing away

The secret to getting the clock in my 71 working again, was Naptha and microKroil. Use a computer duster to gently blow it out. Then use Q-tip or foam swab to get out as much dust as possible. Then use Naptha sparingly as cleaner and lubricant at every contact point. Then wait a few says for the naptha to evaporate as much as it will. Then finally use a toothpick/pin/hypodermic to apply microKroil at the contact points, again sparingly. Worked great!

I was with My oldest brother when he returned from Viet Nam and bought his first new car. A 1969 Dodge Charger with a 318 from Coronet dodge in St Louis. My dad cosigned for him. He moved to Los Angeles and became a cop. After he was married, we went to visit him. Dad took the Charger out for a drive with all us kids in the back seat. " floor it " says my brother. Wow 120 like a shot. "that ain't that 318" says dad. "Nope I swapped out a 426 wedge." That was an awesome car. I begged my brother for it. He sold it to his mechanics son. I have never forgiven him.

Any thing '68 Charger catches my eye. I bought a new '68 383/2bbl PS, PB, AC. Shortly after purchase I got a set of used HP exhaust manifolds from a fellow Mopar guy, installed them with new factory dual exhaust. Went to the wrecking yard and found a set of factory R/T exhaust tips to complete the job. It did make a nice mellow sound. Enjoyed it the car for 5 more years, sold it and moved on to a "73 Trans Am.

That radiator looks good in there. I'll always prefer the OE or "day 2" look over anything modern. If I need to replace the radiator in my 440 I will definitely get one of these. And I am also a master antifreeze pourer, and I use a budweiser bottle for my overflow tank. Thanks for the video.

In the early 80's i had a 79 Chevy half ton pick em up truck, a oil rig truck picked up a rock and it hit the middle of my radiator about a mile and a half from my house. The radiator was leaking pretty bad, i put about a half of medium ground black pepper in and was like soldering the hole. Drove it over a year, sold it to my Dad and he used it for a couple years, sold it to a family friend and he drove it until it rusted away. The radiator never leaked. There's stuff called alumna seal or something like that, it almost looks like black pepper with a coating on it.

That new radiator might need an overflow tank. If it is like the oem, it'll have a little baffle just to the side of the upper hose connection, you should be able to see it through the cap hole. If there isn't one, you need an overflow tank. I had a 75ish Fury in the shop once, had the oem radiator flushed twice, could not get it to stop overheating. Put in a 'meh' aftermarket radiator and it was fine. Still have that old oem radiator. The aftermarket one did not have the baffle in the top tank. I used a 1 gallon Ocean Spray juice bottle ziptied to the radiator support. The owner got a kick out of it.

I went with big goofy aluminum radiator in the valiant. It really pops against the surface rust and the factory tank was cracked.

The voltage limiter for the fuel, temp and oil pressure gauges could be bad. Jamie seems very capable of trouble shooting and fixing electrical problems. Fixing the gauges isn't that difficult. It's just tedious because there are so many possibilities for problems. The only serious problem is if the thermal element in the gauge is burned out.

Know of Evans anti corrosive coolant? You never replace it & has very high boiling point / does not stress pressurize the coolent system. Leno loves the stuff, protects the aluminum water jackets on his doozies...✌👍

her is a suggestion as this car is ur dream one: the power train 360 cid - 4 bb carb. - overdrive "lock-up" 4 speed automatic transmission - rear axle ratio 3.2 which is very good on flat & mountain roads - Mopar new Bleu ignition module " over 5500 r.p.m" will be ur joker.. I know u r a master but the reason why I suggeste this set is: I tried and still remember that joyful ride.. greetings

I already built that but with Magnum EFI in a ‘66 Charger. It worked really well… for brief moments. I went through two of those junk transmissions then swapped to a four speed. Had a computer failure, then fuel system issues, which frankly were to be expected. You have to understand though… this is a “numbers matching” original big block ‘68 Charger. I would never take that setup out. Sure, I considered a Hemi swap for glory. But the urge passed. I have another car to do those ridiculous things with now. This thing runs nice, cruises great, passes whatever I want, and gets 15-16 MPG. Good enough.

My brother needed a front grill to finish off his 68 Roadrunner in the early 2000's, After 9 months of looking everywhere he found a guy with a NOS in the box 68 grill. It only cost him $3,000 dollars....but it sure looks nice! Must be nice to have money! He owns a machine shop. That can be useful foe engine rebuilders...

Speaking of big block water pumps failing, I had one fail on a '71 Charger R/T spectacularly -- while showing off (naturally), it seized and was literally ripped apart. The pully and part of the pump body completely broke off. I have never seen coolant dumped so quickly and thoroughly.

Have you ever tried gasket shellac on the valve cover gaskets? I remembered about 25 years ago we used to use something called Indian head gasket shellac to glue the gaskets to the engine and it worked well to prevent leaks on pans. I will be trying it on the 440 going into my satellite

​@@DeadDodgeGarageIt appears that your Charger has never seen road salt. I could see the original plating on the flare nuts. Here in the salt belt a couple winters of driving in salt causes the flare nuts to rust weld to the cooler lines. They can be a genuine PITA to disconnect once that happens.

My uncle had a 68 Charger. By 1976 the tops of the fenders had rusted away and anything put in the trunk would soon be on the ground. He sold it to buy a Volare. New. On purpose.

The fuel line/carb aside my apoplexy is mainly fueled by the non OEM radiator hose clamps today. OEM Mopar spring clamps all the way and they're about 200x better because they're self adjusting. (the speaker grills are causing me to reach for the Dimenhydrinate but I'll survive... somehow)

I hate the factory type Corbin clamps with a fiery passion. They are a pain to work with, and I haven’t found them to actually work in various cases. Also, none of my sets of hose clamp pliers work with the round wire style. I actually have a bag of them somewhere. The Demon will be getting a more accurate job, and I’ll probably have to use them. But I’m not looking forward to it.

Love the 68's, best looking IMO! Maybe it's the grill with the hidden headlights? HOWEVER much as I like an 'original' look, living in south FL I don't wanna run HOT and would have opted for a Cold Pack or whatever with dual fans. And you don’t need to run the heater when it’s cold in Washington because the heat coming off the fire wall into the cab is sometime very scary of how hot it gets in the car lol, at least my charger did when I drove it

Jamie, I was looking at the Cold Case rads for my '71... they appeared to have the stock looking tanks. Are they different on the earlier gen? Oh... and my stock 22" rad has a large (like 5"+ wide) mount on the left side. Will a 26" just bolt in? Figured a bit more cooling would be good when the Magnum goes in, it's pretty marginal now with the stock 318.

Huh. Sounds like the 26” probably would bolt right in if that is the case. I’m not sure why it would be like that. There are different versions of the 26” radiator but they’re kinda sorta all the same, as long as you get one that matches your lower hose position you’ll be good. Sometimes one or two bolt positions will be slightly different. Usually an easy fix.

I " think " the extra earth lead on the earth terminal is to keep a clock running . the lead just blows out if you try and start it , most have a fuse fitted in the lead .

​@@linwoodlane5721Whaaaat? There's "key off" battery voltage available on the fuse block on vintage MoPars. The body ground is between the cylinder head and the firewall. The negative battery cable connects directly to the engine. The only "memory" in the OEM radios is for station pre-sets, and that is strictly mechanical. The electronics in the OEM radios are analog.

Just looked up your old business address to see who is there? It's now a construction and environmental company. I worked for a guy today that has a Studabaker Avante and it's in beautiful shape. I took a couple pictures, but I don't know how to send them to you. His mom bought it brand new. And I believe it's still all factory.

Actually the construction company has now moved out, and all three buildings there are for sale. If I was rich or something I’d buy them for the memories. Have no interest in ever having a business again really.

Did you re can it and raise the compression? I go 9.7 to 1 I think in my rebuild for the off the shelf done top piston was only they had, my original flat top I wish they were able to reuse but I guess the rebuild would have been way more expensive to get the 10:0 to 1 but oh well, the engine rebuilder said the compression was about 9:3 to 1 and he said it would run better on the compression they got now on 92 octane, but anywho I’m happy the rebuild just cost a little over $4000 compared to other shops who wanted over $10,000 to do it…..

Re cam lol I can’t spell, I had them put the 383 magnum cam in mine with the magnum hardware double value springs and all with the performance coating doing the exhaust manifolds and compression I figure maybe 340 hp, tranny guy did the rebuild on the 727 figured with my engine rebuild and 323 gears about a 2000 stall on the converter was good I think what got put in it, I’m soooo excited it’s almost done!

I haven't done a darn thing. It's completely stock as far as I know, and I love it! It makes plenty of power for the street, for passing, for burnouts, for everything I will ever do with it.

What is your opinion of stainless steel replacement fuel sending units? Any particular brand better than others?
