The way Jimmy projects himself onto Curly is INSANE. He has no shame. He kept talking about responsibility, saying Curly was running from them when he was the one who wanted to escape from all of them. He is, directly or indirectly, the reason for the crew's deaths.
@vickyvale7112 ай бұрын
Everything you said is true! But Curly also refused to take any kind of responsibility in his own way. As the Captain he is also supposed to be responsible for the crew’s safety. He knew about Jimmy’s attack and at VERY LEAST he could have made sure that Anya was separated from Jimmy by giving her a new room with locks or keeping her in the med bay or keeping Jimmy locked up somehow!
@user-yw6hu9lg4nАй бұрын
This might come off as superficial, but this is why you don't put two close friends in one working space. Curly tried to mitigate things between Jim and the rest of the crew-which honestly would've never work out because of his "see the bigger picture" mentality-instead of actually making him take responsibility
@spoony8485Ай бұрын
@@vickyvale711 I think the reason for this (this isnt in his defense btw) is because curly viewed jimmy as a "friend." and Jimmy viewed curly as one too. They were partners, and at most curly would reprimand jimmy but not actually do anything about it. It shows the mental hierarchy of those two have of each other, when compared to the rest of the crew on the ship. I think if there were more cuts with curly we would also see that negligent side of him more rather than the occasional glimpse. Plus, since jimmy is so deranged, it makes curly seem completely sane whenever we pan back to his perspective, whether that's true or not. Also, interesting how swansea is easily the most functional person on the ship, even though he comes off as the worst in our first introduction (and how hes a hardcore alcoholic). I think that’s what makes it such a impactful game though, you could rewatch someone playing it for maybe the fourth time and still find new information you hadn’t realized before. The devs really outdid themselves. Swansea is probably in my top 2 characters, he was arguably one of the genuine and caring, even if he didn’t show it in the way we’d expect.

@allen61872 ай бұрын
@@vytautaszygelis1106it’s heavily implied to be SA, based off of the comments about locks in the sleeping quarters, Anya’s nervousness around Jimmy compared to Curly (and the fact that she’s so clearly trying to appease him whenever she talks to him), and her clear fear that Jimmy may use the gun on board to kill her (and the fact that she mentions not being able to use it to protect herself). Jimmy also heavily dehumanizes her in his segments of the game, to the point that she doesn’t appear in any of his guilt sequences, just his unborn child. I definitely recommend looking up some of the commentary on this game if you’re interested in a more in depth analysis of what happened! Her story is incredibly tragic, but because we see most of the game through the eyes of her abuser, who obviously doesn’t feel guilt for what he did to her, it can be harder to notice the signs. It’s also an interesting a commentary on how easy it is to overlook / even miss abuse, especially when you’re hearing about the situation from the perspective of the abuser. Jimmy is an incredibly unrealizable narrator, and Anya was barely a thought in his mind. That doesn’t mean that the game didn’t heavily imply that he SA’ed her.

Anya pointed out a huge issue: the two places that have locks are designed to be accessed by people in power, there was no brig for containing a violent threat. More importantly, Curly was unwilling to do what Anya gestured to in the first place by hiding the gun- either Jimmy would use it on someone, or Curly had to be the one to kill him. In a way, his torture is being stuck with the one that he refused to contain, confront, or constrain in any way, as his sick mind creates their hell together. The person who designed and signed off on the ship failed to consider any internal threats.

I've seen a lot of other people pointing out that it's moreso a lack of care for their staff. we saw that when you override the autopilot controls, or access the stock you're transporting, those both resulted in a pay dock, even in emergency situations. they put locks on the cockpit and the stock room but not the sleeping quarters because they care more about their assets than their staff, the pony express sees them as expendable. it would also make sense if that were the case because the game kind of parallels reality, in that there was a real mail carrier service called the pony express that only employed orphans under the age of 18 because they were seen as "expendable", the kind of people that wouldn't be missed according to them. back when the pony express was around, that kind of job was extremely dangerous and often cost lives. it shut down after only 18 months of operation. I see it as them both trying to save money on the cost of locks, and there were time/money restrictions making it so that they had to choose where to prioritize installing locks.

!Spoiler warning for Mouthwashing! The whole story started because Jim assaulted Anya. 1) When she asks Curly why aren’t there locks on the sleeping quarters 2) When Anya finds out she’s pregnant and hides the gun saying to Curly: I know you wouldn’t let me use it to protect myself a\but at least I can keep him from using it. 3) Jim crashes the ship right after finding out about the baby because it’s proof of what he did. 4) When he gives Curly medicine (after seeing Anya crying to Swansea)he’s worried about what will happen if they are found and brought back and specially says “What is she gonna say?” In reference to the company. 5) He knows a cocktail to put someone to sleep which he thinks will make them not even remember what happened. 6) The first time “Take responsibility” shows is when he’s talking to Anya and she is timid and trying to appease him. 7) She is the only one he doesn’t feel top level responsibility for. But his subconscious does. His guilt for Anya comes in the form of the horse. Coalescing with how he finds cartoon horse s*xually attractive. And in the end when Jim thinks he’s finally taken responsibility the cartoon horse says: “Then why are you focusing on him?” Implying that he’s not really taking responsibility for the true heart of the entire game. Anya’s forced pregnancy. 8) Anya is only timid and reserved when speaking to Jim. She is a capable nurse because keeps Curly alive with limited tools. Since we see it from her abuser’s point of view he doesn’t see what he did as wrong so it’s in the background of the story. He doesn’t see Anya as a person so her card is underneath all the men in the room of his guilt. And again, guilt for her comes in the form of the horse. While the others get heartfelt speeches she gets not true voice because he doesn’t care. 9) Also when Swansea and Jim’s confrontation starts Swansea says: “Oh yeah, Anya and I talked but she was the one telling me things. Yea.” 10) All of the men failed her on the ship and it led to all of them being at the same mercy of Jim that Anya was. This is a tale of enabling, they didn’t do the crime, they don’t think it was a good thing, but yet they did nothing causing the situation to grow bigger and bigger.

Curly was the only one who was "enabling" any of it because Anya had clearly spoken to him before about Jimmy, and yet he hadn't kept them separated. Swansea very clearly started hating Jimmy at a certain point, once Anya told him about what Jimmy had done. Daisuke literally just didn't know. Blaming everyone for it makes no sense when Swansea clearly didn't know until Anya was days away from killing herself (presumably why he'd also kept the axe with himself rather than letting it be with the "captain"--jimmy) and Daisuke was too airheaded and uninvolved with anyone but Swansea to find out. He also fully trusted Jimmy at the end of it, showing no sign of knowledge about what Jimmy had done. My hatred for Jimmy is as strong as yours, but Swansea and Daisuke were innocent. ffs Swansea even tried to kill Jimmy at the end.

it makes me sad bcs ive heard multiple people say this but the ending is there for a reason. The ending is the focal point of the whole reason all of this happened. obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I think the biggest issue is that most people, mainly men, dont understand the symbolism of it. The whole reason Jimmy crashed the ship was he got anya pregnant via SA. and the ending begins focusing on that a bit more. And also the guilt he feels towards the other two. Notice the theme of regret with the men, but there is NOTHING for anya. Only for the baby he forcefully created. He doesnt even regret what he did to her. Only now that he nearly had to face responsibilities bcs of it. idk. Yes it was a long game, but I really think every single scene had a meaning up until the end. Would the game have been fine without it? sure. But is it part of the story telling just as much as the rest of the game? absolutely. I think the issue comes where the developers put the really intense shit just a litttttle to early, making all the more symbolic, thoughtful, dark walkthroughs afterwards have a bit less intensity. But yeah. just my thoughts on that.
@PipEnigma2 ай бұрын
I agree with you, but I think the issue is that the actual puzzle/gameplay elements towards the end start to get excessive because they all hit back to back to back in such quick sequence you don’t have much time to even process what you just did before you’re thrown into another one. It’s a little too overwhelming to the player, especially if you don’t immediately grasp what you’re supposed to be doing at first and therefore start getting frustrated by failing over and over until you do figure out that puzzle, then straight on to the next.
@xxozziewolfxx96602 ай бұрын
I agree yea
@jadefang22222 ай бұрын
@PipEnigma Even then, that's a storytelling choice they made. It's like everything Jimmy has done up until the end is all coming down, crashing on him all at once. In a gameplay sense maybe it hinders it a little bit, but it all happening back to back by the end is to nail in the idea that he's shattering at the idea of responsibility, and how much he's supposed to take. And even then, this piece of shit doesn't even feel bad for SA-ing Anya. Feels worse about the unborn baby than what he did to her. And that's why the end is so important. For this game, the game itself feels more like a storytelling tool than anything else, and it works.
@PipEnigma2 ай бұрын
@@jadefang2222 Sure, I understand that, and I appreciate the story for what it is. However, it is a game first and foremost, and I think most people start to enjoy the game less when the actual gameplay elements start to feel like they're dragging the game down. I think some of the time spent in each sequence starts to feel...tedious. Each gameplay sequence just overstays its welcome a tad bit too long. Going to get the mouthwash for Daisuke, having to avoid the monster on the ceiling, that sequence lasts just a couple of minutes too long. The relief of that ending should be "Finally, that was terrifying." but instead it feels like "Finally, I was wondering when it was gonna end." Crawling around the vents the first time starts to go for a little too long. It's just a pacing thing, genuinely. Yes, I understand thematically *why* it's happening, but the reason why doesn't take away from the nagging sensation in the back of my mind that I'm actually enjoying the story unfolding more than I'm enjoying the gameplay, and I start to feel like I want to skip through some of the ending puzzles because I'm thinking "There can't be that much actual story left, so now I feel like I'm trudging through mud for 30 minutes just for a 3 minute ending sequence to tie it all together."
@jadefang22222 ай бұрын
@@PipEnigma To be fair, I've watched a couple of other playthroughs before this one and I've seen people go through a lot of the segments like the one going to get the mouthwash and going through the vents happen much faster for them. Those segments get as drawn out as you'll let them. And I'd personally argue, yes, it's a definitely a game, but it's much more cinematic overall. It feels more like it uses the fact that it's a game to enhance the story it's telling by truly dropping you into the shoes of Jimmy and Curly via the mechanics of a game. This game could easily be translated into a movie or the like, because above everything else it's telling a story. Personally, I felt sick at the end, absorbing everything that Mouthwashing is about. It didn't even occur to me at all that it dragged, but even then, it didn't drag at all in my eyes. But personal opinions and all that. Regardless of how it ended, I think you and me at least agree this is at least a good game overall, so who cares. We experienced something from our own eyes, got different shit out of it, and here we are. Have a great day, friend.

Jimmy is the most monstrous human I've seen in a long time. He takes out his frustration of not being as successful in his career as he wants, on his his best friend. He crashes the ship out of spite, effectively for being fired. He physically and shrekshually assaults and ropes his coworker. He's obsessed with being in charge and puts others in danger just to appear competent. Aka, he doesn't see them as people. Only the image of himself is what matters to him. Nothing else. He horrifically tortures his best friend when he's at hist most helpless. And in the end, he doesn't even see the error of his ways. He just ends up with no-one else to blame but himself. So instead of blaming himself he "heroically sacrifices himself" for his friend. But it's actually just to avoid responsibility yet again. Insanity can't even be argued for Jimmy. He is completely calculated, deliberate and intentional in his actions! Just think of all the safety systems you had to shut down at the start of the game to even crash the ship. All of this was premeditated 1000%! He wasn't on drugs either. Nor did he have any mental conditions. It was all pure ego and self righteousness! We have laws, prisons, psyche evaluations, etc because of people like Jimmy! To prevent them from harming other people, and destroying a community/society. To be fair, the captain and company also failed. They consciously ignored all the red flags Jimmy held up and waved vigorously all the time. Hell, they even ignored the assaults. All of this could have been prevented if that monster Jimmy was locked up in a room (on the ship or in a asylum). Which he would have been if the authorities around him didn't excuse/ignore his misdeeds. That doesn't change the fact of what a monster Jimmy is. And that it is all his actions and his fault. He's one of, if not the, most MONSTROUS Character I've seen in Video Games, nay in media, so far.

It's a great story and has many great moments don't get me wrong, but that's still time taken out of my day for a story we can put together pretty quickly with the way it does it's time jumps. Context clues if you will. Still love the game but everyone I've seen play the game has said it drags for too long near the end and I can't help but agree

@arctichangover2 ай бұрын
having mark say the last 30 minutes of the game dragged and should've been cut really disappointed me. I've watched a bunch of playthroughs of this game and I've noticed that many men who play dont understand how important the last section is in portraying and helping the audience interpret the story. It gives us a lot of insight into the way Jimmy actually viewed Anya - as nothing more than the consequences to his actions, his SA, and the monster growing inside of her. Juxtaposing that with daisuke, there are frequent memorials to him near the ending, like the segment in the vents with his weights and gameboy, and then the grave just before and after his death, and the reoccurring hibiscus flowers. The way jimmy views the men in this story is SO different to how he views anya, and that is explicitly shown, as well as him losing his mind, in the final sequences of the game. This game is amazing, and honestly i think its full of such dense symbolism and analogies that most people miss all of it. But seeing people completely miss the SA aspect of the story, when its so insanely in your face (the dead pixel on the screen, why medical locks but not the sleeping quarters, anya talking about hiding the gun, anya being nervous around jimmy, jimmy purposefully crashing the ship to avoid responsibility, the ultrasound segment at the end of the game, polle saying "if all of that is true, why are you still so concerned about him?" followed by a "take responsibility" screen showing jimmy thinks he isn't responsible for anyas assault, anya saying "you were right. i should've done this a long time ago" to jimmy right before she offs herself which suggests he told her to off herself, jimmy saying to curly "what would she do?", etc) is pretty sad. it just kind of shows that when you're not familiar with these types of abusive relationships, when you've never been in one or known someone in one, then you just become... ignorant to it and how it affects people.

What does the dead pixel mean? /gen
@arctichangover2 ай бұрын
@@kennalikespizza4515 In that one scene with curly and Anya, anya is able to see the dead pixel while curly is not. you could interpret this two ways: one, the dead pixel represents jimmy and who he really is. Anya is able to see jimmy for the monster he is after her assault, while curly is still stuck in his people pleasing optimistic attitude, where he hasn't realised yet just how horrible jimmy is. Two, the pixel could symbolise the larger problem of Jimmy on the ship and his actions, including but not limited to him assaulting anya. the pixel started out as something most people could ignore and look past, but then the whole screen breaks (Swansea hitting it with the axe) and the problem (jimmy) has spiralled out of control and cant be ignored anymore. these are just my ways of looking at it, I'm sure other people have other opinions but these two make the most sense to me.

as someone who has been sa by someone like jimmy and watched this its expertly done. the first time i watched it i barely had a clue jimmy was the bad guy, its subtlety makes it difficult for people to pick up on the nuances. once you grasp a thread of the plot, the whole story unravels and the unusual one-liners and details start making sense. i totally get where youre coming from, but i also understand people that didnt engage with it fully. some people just miss those points, which is disappointing, but it happens. all we can do is hope mark thought more about it in his own time and came to those same conclusions

Seeing popular youtubers totally ruins it by focusing on the comedic aspects and giving it a wrong point of view infuriates me. That's why i waited for a long time for mark to play it because i knew he would "understand" it better due to his experience with horror games. Even tho i was expecting it to be a singular video and not a streaming. Yet it did feel refreshing to see how his mood slowly changed to a more focused and serious one while still keeping the humorous impact at the revealing point of the game, and focusing on the dialogues of the characters instead of just quickly reading the conversations/skipping through them. Mouthwashing is a really good game, but I'm very disappointed in the community it formed.

100000% him dying thinking he's a good guy makes me so ill. He really wanted to play like he was the savior and the martyr even at the end. He deserved so much worse.

This is one of the most comforting videos I have seen. I'm lying on a blanket pile in my dorm room with all the lights off, doing homework, and watching this stream from the future. It was so peaceful and comforting. 10/10 Will be watching this again

1:35:48, question for people who know the ending (spoilers) If Jimmy is the one who's psychologically compromised (shown by the ending and throughout the game), why is CURLY the one who gets this weird hellscape vision? At the end of the blood sea scene with the ladders and the warning signs, I believe we're to understand the explosion happens, but is that just a poetic/cinematic way to show more story? Or when Curly said he was just sane enough to stay on his toes (or something like that), was he being serious? Why would he be having this acid trip of a vision?
@anishajog2 ай бұрын
I could be wrong, but it seemed to me not like a vision Curly was actually experiencing but more like a symbolic sequence. It's leading up to him doing Jimmy's psych eval, so the emergency warning signs might be indicative of how he was seeing all of these red flags in Jimmy that he kept brushing off. The ladders could represent the recurring analogy that Curly was at the top rung of his symbolic "ladder" in life (i.e. doing well for himself) while everyone else could barely reach his bottom. Jimmy resentfully brings this up more than once to imply that Curly would always be above the rest of them while they couldn't even come close to his success. I imagine the bent and broken ladders were a symbol of what was to come, with Curly being so heavily injured in the crash and all of those prospects dying with Jimmy's decisions.
@StarfayeArt2 ай бұрын
@@anishajogohhh I see that! I was thinking maybe it would be PTSD nightmares post-crash Curly could be having while coming in and out of it on the drugs but it was confusing that it would be in a pre-crash segment, since it’s very intentional about showing a nightmarish interpretation of* Curly’s encounter with the crash itself.

This is where the enabler gets post-abetting clarity-All of those warning signs that he ignored at first are blaring now.

there’s a book called “up or down: the illusion of choice” in anya’s office about pain perception in fish. this led to me finding out that wrong organ (mouthwashing dev) also developed a game called How Fish Is Made, a really wild horror game mark played in 3 scary games #84. kudos to wrong organ for two very memorable surrealist horror games involving much darker themes!!

One of these days, someone is going to make a Halloween stream that turns into a horror skit where the whole thing is captured on the facecam and you can only be like 80% sure it’s fake.

48:00 I haven't heard Mark scream like that in a while. That filled me with such nostalgia lol Also, is it possible the whale that Mark saw at 17:10 was like a hidden anomaly and that's why it didn't appear in the list? I wouldn't be surprised if it was, and Mark would be the one lucky enough to encounter it. Or maybe it was just a bug.
