When they came to England 🏴 they only needed a passport and nothing else and could stay for upto 6 months and they were here for 5 months. Also when I went to the USA to do a tour of the west coast I had to apply for an ESTA at cost and have it accepted before I could go to the USA. As I understand it Canada and New Zealand also have ETA requirements for UK citizens and the EU will require ETIAS for all non EU citizens soon too. Canada had had something similar for years for visitors, so the UK getting on board to raise revenue from visitors as opposed to just the citizenry seems in line with most countries looking for additional revenue sources. Super easy to do this all online and they’ve talked about this for years so most travellers have known this was coming for a while now. Most overseas cruise stops require additional visa/ETA type for certain nationalities like ours to South America or in many places in Asia and the Middle East.

@@JD-gv4uz OMG, don't judge the whole country by what the headlines say! Apart from local pockets of trouble 95% of the UK ticks over nicely thank you. Most countries in Europe have strife at the moment, and many who have hot tourist spots are talking about restricting tourism due to the damage it causes to the very thing that brings the tourists. Not to mention the rise of far right politics in many European countries, and the world wide effect of the wars and border skirmishes in Ukraine, Middle-East, Africa, Russia-Sino-India, South East Asia et al. On ETA/ESTA's, its no big deal and nothing to do with restricting entry to genuine visitors, or returning nationals, or dual Commonwealth passport holders, and its also generally cheaper and easier to get than a visa, but importantly its very useful tool for blocking illegal migration, they have been in place in the USA, and Canada* for years (*ESTA, only if arriving by air, includes Commonweath residents). It's the same in how moving money about between countries has become more controlled because of money-laundering. The world has changed since we were able hop on a boat, train, plane and get waved through borders, especially from the UK where to travel to Europe is increasingly more difficult since Brexit. Norm, its not just England that is affected, it's every country that makes up the UK. If you fly direct to Scotland you will still need one. It's really no different from the US requiring ESTA for non-citizens or non-residents. This will cause airlines to drop UK flights as most people will avoid the additional red tape, regardless of how straightforward it might be to do. I'm a US/UK dual national so it wont impact me but it will hurt tourism and the people there that rely on it for a living. Another brilliant government idea.

The EU has it, as do the USA, Canada, and Australia. Canada, the USA, and Australia are continent sized. As is the EU. Once you're through the kerfuffle at the border, the EU Schengen area extends from Brittany to the Black Sea, now that Romania and Bulgaria have joined Schengen, and from Ostend to Talinn.The same applies to Australia and the United States. A Greyhound pass takes you everywhere, pretty much. Not in England. Snarled up traffic, on pot holed roads, trains that rarely or never run, vast swathes of the country closed if half an inch of snow falls. Is it really worth the hassle and EXPENSE ? Abd the price of UK hotel rooms is astronomical.

A lot of countries do this, so I don't understand the negativity towards the UK. It's a fraction of the cost of a trip and lasts 2 years. My understanding is that transit passengers going through the UK onto other countries may have to be landed and reboarded, as a lot of airlines do not offer transit facilities (budget airlines for example) or will not pay for transit facilities. As a result, passengers enter the UK via a border control and go straight onto departures to check in and catch an onward flight.
@glennet961314 күн бұрын
@@ridemorebikes6448 This applies even if you don't go through border control but are just in transit. So if you are flying from, say, San Francisco to Barcelona transiting through Heathrow you will have to apply even though you stay airside. Heathrow thinks it will lose a substantial number of passengers, up to four million a year, because other countries aren't doing this.

Of course those people entering the UK in small boats after crossing the Channel will be exempt from this new rule. Those people will still be welcomed into the country even though they are not carrying a passport or any travel documents.

I hate the ETA requirements for passing through .... it's so complicated and inconvenient to travel to Europe for those of us who aren't part of EU not to mention getting more expensive with all these add on costs. Thanks for letting us know.

So, you have never gone to any of the many countries that require a visa to enter? We have had to obtain ESTA's for the USA for many years now. Lots of countries have similar.

Australia has had this implemented for over a year now. Once you get through the online ETA process (by the way, answer questions as an Aussie would, not an American…misdemeanor traffic violations are seen by a magistrate in Oz, not a judge), the entry into Oz is wonderful. So simple. Singapore has also been using this system and is also smooth a silk. Much better than standing in a line for an hour, entering the U.S. (even with their ETA)

Thanks for the update! When I travel from the U.S. to Ghana, I go to London, stay overnight, and then take British Airways. They're a great airline for flying into Anglophone Africa.
@G4GUO16 күн бұрын
I have dual British and Canadian citizenship so I am going to have to juggle passports. It is not just the ETA but also the API (Advanced Passenger Information) you have to give to the airlines. Outgoing I will have to enter my Canadian info to the airline app and on the return my British info. Same applies when entering the US as Canadians don't require an ESTA to enter the U.S. When going to the U.S I have to make sure I use the same passport to enter and leave the U.S otherwise they may think I have overstayed. I am not sure when you formally leave the U.S. I suspect it is when the TSA does a document scan just before you go through security.

When taking a cruise out of a UK port and visiting an EU port both the ETA and ETIAS is required. A lovely tax grab.

Useful information! Understand the reason behind this but another example of letting in too much riffraff and then clamping down on the general public.

Similar to the US ESTA, it’s easy to just go online and it lasts 2 years once it’s done. Costs 21 $US, that’s for the USA. I’m hoping it’s easy for the UK one as well

I'm an Aussie (UK expat), and I tried the app, and it was so frustrating. I got to the payment section, and it crashed several times. Got locked out and can't get it unlocked. Went on line no problems. Got an email immediately saying received and being processed, should be approved in about 3 days. 8 minutes later, I got another email saying it was approved and active.

In NZ the exchange rate means NZers pay $22.00. Not a lot really considering the cost of airfares. If you can afford them $22 is not much.

I cannot even BOARD a plane to Australia or other unless I have the ETA docs and others available to show the gate agents. Each country on a cruise is up to you-before you board. ie: columbia, you must have a passport.

This is very important. You must realise illegal entrants are arriving in the uk at around 1000 or more a week . So we dont have room for people who are obeying the law and booking flights etc.

Seriously? This is an issue??? Geez, you have to get up, get dressed, make sure your bags are packed... Get a ride to the airport or seaport... wait around... then have your ticket ready.... GEEEZ. Remember when you could just close your eyes and click your heels together??? SHOCK HORROR. Sorry, but this is a needless blow up of a new small requirement.

❤ Thanks for the info guys! I am beginning to think that there are just too many hoops for international tourists to negotiate. It's all so very stressful to dot all the I's and cross all the proverbial T's as it were. We have all we need in North America and so we will be content with that! And, no VAT to boot! Europe(Canada too) is a failing state due to its over-regulation and here we have the perfect example of another Golden Goose about to be slaughtered! I will spend my retirement dollars exploring beautiful North America from the comfort of my luxury SUV.🍻🥂🏒🥅🥳- Mike from Ottawa. PS; love you guys!

It might be that you can't pay for the ETA with prepaid credit cards. I had a similar experience when trying to renew my UK passport through the UK government's website, as they wouldn't take my prepaid card although it had sufficient funds on it. I wound up getting the passport renewed through a passport agency that took it with no problems. It was worth the agency's fee.
