Back in the '80s we used to go out here and on to Fort Rock from Bend or La Pine, and when you made that trip, you made it a whole day-long excursion, packed survival gear and food because chances are you would not see another human being between La Pine and the town of Fort Rock, and you drove at 45-55 mph the whole way. ...last time I was at Hole in the Ground, there were at least 20 cars there, five or six RVs, and packs of 20 to 30 year old Instagram influencers struggling to get the best selfie while throwing their trash on the ground, and riding motor bikes down the trails; just taking the whole place over and trashing it so no one else can appreciate it. I'm glad your video shows it much more like I remember before "they" discovered it a few years back.

I think a lot of the people we see in parks and on trials. Their main motivation is to go, so they can post photos. Not to enjoy being out. I went to Glacier two years ago. You need to have reservations long in advance. You cannot get into the park without a reservation. People get into their campsites after dark. Set up their pop up tent on their vehicle. Eat go to bed and leave before 8. On to the next campsite. While checking off trails all day. It was strange for us to watch the campground nearly empty out every morning, then be filled up again just as it gets dark. I think we were the only ones who had the same campsite for a week. The sight of full trailhead parking lots at every trail head just made me want to leave. One last thing. This is me being petty. Kids! the REI outdoor outfitter look is lame. You do not need gear, to take a 2 hour hike. All you need is shoes and clothes. Comfortable ones. It is possible to go on a hike without your phone / camera. I have many images from 50 years ago saved only to my memory. I can retrieve them all without an electronic device. I just can't send them over the internet. Nor do I want to. LOL

Heck, I have no proof of what caused that hole. In the past it could have been a hot water resivor for a community or lost city near by. It maybe a hole where a giant tree once stood and then was scrubbed from existence. The area may have been filled with valuable resources a long time ago and then mined. It may have been an area of high technology that don't match the current narrative so it was blown into obscurity.... Let's just call it an inverted volcano and call it quits.

@MattCookOregon Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Any good volcanos there?
@teklife Жыл бұрын
Neither God nor bad, there are no volcanoes in New York. but there's a lot of other natural beauty and unique geological features. It's a very old landscape and it was changed a lot during the ice ages and the recessions which left the great lakes and a lot of other lakes and includes carving out the mohawk valley which flows into the Hudson River and scraping the tops of many hard granite hills to give us open mountain tops and beautiful vistas where they would otherwise be fully tree covered. Catskill park, Adirondack park, the finger lakes, the thousand islands on the st Lawrence River, the great lakes, oneida lake, lake Champlain, lake George, Niagara falls(and river), and thousands of other lakes rivers, mountains, meadows, marshes, and streams. Oh and the huge long white sand beaches of long Island. The Hudson Valley is incredibly picturesque too and is famous for the Hutson River school(art paintings). Check out the views from Anthony's nose, breakneck ridge, and the Hudson highlands, and the many huge parks just a short drive out of New York city.

Often in the back of my mind I wanted to get this answer. Thanks to the miracle of technology, I have it. Things like this are creepy, beautiful, and interesting. I always think that the center will collapse like a sinkhole some day, even just from walking on it.

Agreed they are a bit of all that. Not much going on underneath now but always possible, just like walking up any mountain that could erupt.

By chance I found your channel and I've subscribed. If Oregon was part of Canada I'd live there. We've vacationed on the Oregon coast, in the Cascades and in the desert for 3 summers when our kids were still at home. I worked at one time off and on out of Portland and loved that city. Those who live in Oregon are very fortunate indeed!

There is a large hole to the west between hiway 31 and 97. It's gotta be 40 miles wide, it's overgrown. I saw it in the first seconds of your video on the left.

Nice catch! I have wondered about that before too. It is more of a hill. The dark shape on map mostly comes from trees. I was going to do a video on it but when looking into it there was nothing.

Have you been to the Alford Desert? French Glen is cool place if you ever get a chance. Not to mention the Steens Mountains.

Sure have! Last I was there was right at the start of the pandemic. We got back from days of no service and people were going nuts haha. Here is the Alvord video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIjLi6mfhr6cl8k

As a multiple visitor of Arizona's Meteor Crator, my 1st thought was this also was a blast from space. It's fascinating that a form of vulcanism can for such a similar topographical feature, both of which created by an immense force. Great video!
@MattCookOregon2 жыл бұрын
Yep they are incredibly similar especially with erosion happening to either. Thankfully someone knows how to look at rocks to get the story.

I visited there only once about 25 years ago. That's a problem with Oregon is there's just to much stuff to see! One thing you didn't mention is those steam explosions shot rocks as large as 26 feet across, 2.3 miles away. Makes me glad I wasn't around then living nearby. That's for the refresher tour!
@MattCookOregon Жыл бұрын
Thank you. That is impressive volcano power. I would mention something more vague next time. People tend to disagree or fall asleep when you start using numbers.

The key to understanding this type of crater is right in the center🎯 All the debris surrounding it tells much, also.

Right, that is the source. It is always fortunate if natural wonders keep their shape so we can study them better.

Interesting that central Oregon was and still is extremely active Vulcanisms and yet it was all underwater they say even though it’s at 2500 ft to 4500 feet above sea level perhaps the magma .... well yes he said it in the video super heated the lake water/spring and boom dignify we got our selves a hole in the dirt i know where I live in prineville the water table is mor spots is only a few feet down and we’re also in a caldera scary stuff too cause I just felt that 6.4 earthquake Northern California just had hopefully Mother Nature dosent decide we need to become an ocean again that would suck
@MattCookOregon2 жыл бұрын
This spot was right near the edge of the lake, probably above the water level. Look at Fort rock which is way different, obvious wave cut ledges.
