Thank you. I had some grumbling as I climbed the learning curve with your paint products but I hope I represented them in an honest but flattering manner in the end.

Shes a beauty Mark! Look forward to seeing her in the water.

I like your “philosophy” and am reminded of a saying from an old boss of mine…”A little bit of putty, a little bit of paint, makes things look like what they ain’t!” The man was an excellent painter and good craftsman.

Love that!

Hi Mark. I switched to waterborne sprayed finishes for cabinet/millwork and have not looked back. It you can get an auto-body quality gun it make a big difference. I got a Devillbiss gun (HVLP driven by a compressor) and it let me spray much heavier finishes. Also, you may get better flow characteristics by using an extender to dilute instead of water. I use General Finishes extender with many brands of finish and get good results. Keep on experimenting until you find what works for you!
@NomadboatbuildingАй бұрын
If I can streamline my spray booth setup, I would certainly make those improvements. Are the extenders alcohol based?
@michaelm325524 күн бұрын
@@NomadboatbuildingNo, they are water based (and watery), but have some other components. Also, you may notice that thinning the finish to spray reduces the gloss. So, diluted glossy may be halfway to semigloss.

It makes a very handsome package the closer it comes to completion. It'd be interesting to hear the all up weight when it's done.

Just a wonderful project Mark. Can you comment on the brush you are using on the finish coat?
@NomadboatbuildingАй бұрын
Not much to say. Just an average priced synthetic bristle oval brush. Simms brand I think. I wasn’t happy with it on this paint. I think Purdy brushes work better with these waterborne enamels. But every brush is its own animal. Luck of the draw I find.

Nice! Have you ever used those disposable spray bottle /gun things that you put your own paint in? Most of the painting I do on tugboats is 8” rollers , 4” tampon rollers ( genius idea) and chip brushes. Work boat finish is the order of the day. Why only linseed oil on the bottom? Boiled or raw?

Well, I suppose we're going to have to come up with some other complaint to nag and cry about.

May I ask you about the paint, type, manufacturer, where it was purchased?

It's TotalBoat Elixer Waterborne enamel inside and out. Supplied from TotalBoat directly. The primer is Interlux Pre-Kote.

Is there a reason polystyrene could or couldn't replace wood?

Do you mean replace all the planking with polystyrene?

@@Nomadboatbuilding some or all; where ever appropriate
@NomadboatbuildingАй бұрын
It's a good question. I have pondered building a boat using traditional methods but using synthetic lumber products. There are a number of challenges with this concept. First, the synthetic products don't usually have the same strength and stiffness properties as wood. In some cases this might be an advantage, in others, not so much. Second, fastening with adhesives requires careful selection of products because plastics are inherently slippery and resistant to bonding. Styrene is not particularly strong and probably has not the greatest UV resistance but is bondable with Methyl Chloride. If you look at the history of plastic boats, Polyethylene and ABS are more common as well as other branded materials like Royalex. Of course the use of Polyester and Vinylester resins are ubiquitous in the industry. I would certainly entertain the challenge of trying to build in thermoformed plastics if some plastic company wanted to bankroll the project.

@@Nomadboatbuilding what formats would you want the raw materials… the same as commercial lumber?

Love the tampon rollers but I rarely use them on boats. I usually just brush. I don’t use the disposable guns. I just don’t like disposable stuff in principle. Boiled linseed oil. Raw never dries. I use that to store my varnish brushes in though.
