As a former arcade tech (albeit 20 years ago) I can confirm Cyclone can be set to payout jackpots at variable intervals and also people would stand there with a cup of tokens and just keep plunking them in. Cyclone was one of our top 3 ticket games for my entire 2 years at the arcade and I'm not surprised it still exists to this day. For the record, MOST of our non-skill based (ie not skeeball or basketball) redemption games from that time period had ways of being set to payout jackpots variably.

I worked at an arcade for 5 years. A lot of the games are rigged. It obviously depends on the game, but many of them have options where you can set the payout rate. Games like Cyclone, Stacker, Keymaster, etc. Stacker and Keymaster, where you put in a very expensive prize to draw people in (Xbox, PS4, Beats, etc.), we would set a 1/1000 payout rate. So we'd always be guaranteed to make money on it. My boss even told one of my coworkers before we opened for the day, to play Stacker until he wins. He literally played the game for 1.5 hours straight, won the game, so it reset the payout, so we wouldn't have to give out a prize for another month or whatever. Arcades are scams, simple as that. I honestly thought it was just common knowledge though, I'm surprised everybody doesn't know this.
@docgiggles1307 жыл бұрын
Firelord Azula I worked in arcades and routes for more than 20 years. You manager didn't know the game very well. The play count can be reset in a menu in less than 30 seconds. He was also a fool because players notice that nothing ever gets won and they stop playing it. Games that people see a win on get played more. It's a case of giving up some money to make a lot more.
@docgiggles1307 жыл бұрын
Rob Yagenmyer I'm not surprised you won. It must have been an operator that understood what it takes to keep people coming back to play it again (Or one that knows they may have to show the local police the game history and prove it's not being reset all the time)
@l00tur7 жыл бұрын
Vending tech here, can confirm this. The high traffic places get the shaft on jackpot payout. Your best bet is the low traffic places where the game is less played but the odds are better in your favor. Word spreads quickly when a game has dished out a jackpot in say, a bowling alley.

A carny is someone who works the booths, games etc at fairs . Games of chance, such as this, are very much rigged in favor of the owners of them at these fairs If you have a conscience , meaning sleep at night, you most likely will not do well as a carny. If you want to enjoy yourself, meaning not lose , then play a game called *I Got It* It's a game where someone will win each time. It's located on the midways, and generally under a tent with seats. Grab a beer and a sandwich , or whatever, and just sit back and enjoy. They let me go from my job as a carny , for I gave away a couple of the big prizes that are rigged . The big ones are rarely won. I was basically stealing money from 13 year old kids. It bothered me. So I gave a couple away. F**k Um

This is a lot like the arcade crane games, right? They only deliver enough force to actually pick up an item once in awhile, which is why you lose most of the time.
@OztheTall7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the crane game. The one's with e-claw or e-laut are all payout based. Basically the ones with more expensive prizes. The ones that you find in Wal-Mart's and sometimes machines with cheaper prizes are actually skill based but you still have the owner set the strength of the claw and it can still be very hard. There are also other factors like if the prize is too big or too small for the claw.
@TheWwjd957 жыл бұрын
K & G Claws and Games so to clarify what I thought you said, the newer crane machines are preset to win a game when it hits a certain number of tries, but in a classic crane machine, the claw strength is what can be altered in order to win? Aside from the prize itself's aspect like size and weight [does my wording make sense?]
@OztheTall7 жыл бұрын
Yes you are pretty much correct. Some of the older machines can be set to payout also that has been programmable since the mid 70's. And newer machines do have the option of just being a skill based game. It really just depends on the operator and what the prizes are. So just assume the more expensive the prize the more the higher the payout. The operator on newer machines can also set multiple "payouts" so for the first 20 plays the claw will be very weak, the next 20 could be only if you are really good/lucky and then have the machine keep getting stronger after so many plays again. Some of the rigged claws are also set up to have enough strength to lift the prize then drop it so you have to watch for those again. If you see a claw machine with say Yeti mugs or purses nicely arranged and they look easy to get that is definitely a payout and even if you lift the prize if it is dropped immediately payout hasn't been hit. Even on skill based it is up to the operator how easy it is to win. We have a lot of videos on Wal-Mart claw machines where you see us lose even though a prize is open and easily gettable but then we also have a series from last valentines day where we completely cleaned out a claw machine of over 50 toys because the claw operator set it so strong it was pretty much a winner every time.Sorry for the long winded explanation.

Those games have settings that basically say "Let someone win every XX games". I used to manage arcades and got to see some of the settings in the games. In a weird way, games of true chance like Colorama are the biggest payers. Its a ball in a spinning bowl, kind of like Roulette, so theres not really any way to rig it. I started typing this comment before I reached the end, I just saw the manual shot and had to laugh as I basically nailed the wording. I'd get kids/parents complaining all the time "I hit it when the light was on and it just moved over!" The smartest way to play it is to watch a couple of 8 year old suckers lose all of their money, then swoop in and play a few rounds and you'll likely win. I'd argue the real scam in arcades is the fact that you'll spend up to $100 to win something worth $3-$5 and leave like you're on top of the world. Those prizes, especially the lower end prizes, come on a massive pallet from China. If you look closely at some of the higher end prizes, they're typically toys with slight defects that couldnt be sold in stores or its just stuff that was not selling so it gets a huge ticket price slapped on it and is some how sold at 1000% of its worth. Arcades are too far gone now. At least in the 80s-90s you could go in, learn a non-redemption game and be able to play for 10 minutes on one credit. Mortal Kombat is an example, if you were good, you could pay once and play it to the end. I could go to my local arcade with $10 (which was huge in the 90s as a kid) and play for 2 hours. Now even the games that don't pay tickets are hugely over priced, designed like the ticket games, they basically have a set amount of time you're going to play for your $1+ buy in and thats it. Skill no longer means anything to those games. I refuse to even bother playing in most arcades now unless its a retro arcade with some reasonable games in it.

An arcade that isn't a scam? Sounds like it was fun...

Gacha digital games (usually mobile, though there several P2P ones like Star Wars BattleFront 2) completely cut out the China middleman and give out digital prizes with no monetary value at all. On one hand, these probably are the main causes of Arcade Death, on the other hand, it's a good thing they're being investigated for being practically gambling for kids...

There's a arcade near me that you pay a cover charge of 15 dollars and you can literally play all day. Like you can come in at open and leave and return as much as you want all day and play any games in there. To me, that's worth it.

Thing is, you're also paying for the fun, and that's something most mega-arcade patrons understand. I don't think anybody is under the illusion that they're going to "Win big" and give the redemption booth a run for their money. At least in a casino that's technically possible, though statistically unlikely. In a kid's arcade, the kids legitimately enjoy the games and adults see that as part of the money spent. It's the experience. Whereas most serial casino-goers are going in for a payout, which is downright foolish.
