I watched a movie back in the early 1970s starring Dave Wheeler, I believe. It was called Yahoo, I think. In any case, It was awesome to see the old names like your great uncle. He was one of the greats! I was happy to have been in Sun Valley in 74 and 75. Great times. I wanted to take lessons....

I started skiing when I was four. Born in 1962, I lived through hot dogging on long planks in the 70's. Thing's improved with shorties,ski leashes, then two prong ski brakes. The quads are fried now, but it sure was fun watching this video!❤😂

I skied Freestyle for Lake Eldora 1977-80. I then skied pro until 1983. Being coached be Eddy Lincoln, Bruce Dinman, Peter "Rabbit" Johnson and getting to ski with Scott Brooksbank, John Clendnnin and some of the early greats was amazing.

Agreed that VERY FIRST event was at Waterville Valley. Just dug out an old trophy and it reads. Chevrolet Skiing / Waterville Valley / Nat'l Championship / of / Exhibition Skiing / 1971 / Amateur Champion So it was 1971 but clearly the buzz at the event was that it was THE first. I think Warren Miller had footage from that years movie of me bleeding when my ski cut my head in the qualifier. (First Blood lol) And yes the crowd went wild so I got to advance! There was so much snow coming down that they had to postpone the finals one day. (So it was definitely way before March in New England.) Took over a decade to make it to my recommended but it sure brings back memories . Thanks.

That's awesome that you were in it Bob! Yes, I've looked for available footage of that competition but haven't been able to find it. I think Wayne (Wong) managed to get to that one too. As I stated in the info at the top, Dick Barrymore appears unaware of that the Waterville Valley meet in 1970.

"When you did it right you did it Wong" etc. lol My brother Steve who was a member of the PSIA USA Demonstration team competed in the pro division and was top ten finisher. I was told by a friend they had seen footage of my bleeding face in that seasons ski movie so focus on clips by the big hitter film makers of 71

Jackmerius Tacktheritrix No. Barrymore made many movies in europe and knew and stated in those that skiing in the U.S. was brought over from there. The reason the U.S. is the focus here is because that is where freestyle skiing began.

They would pick it up… but it’s sufficiently different that they would have to learn all new skills. It’s easier to go backwards because you can still ski like this on modern skis. But you can’t carve on older skis

@@tainicon4639 Bullshit you couldn't carve on older skis. Did hotdogging back in the 70's/80's on Olin Mark IV Comp IV in 190 length and carved like nobody's business. It's all in how you set up the skis - did my own tuning. They had a bit of an upturn in the tail (not much). Modern mogul skiing like practiced by competitive skiers is nothing more than a slalom race without gates. WAY too fast. On seeded moguls as well . Only reason I don't ski anymore is extensive knee damage.

The first "World Professional Freestyle Championship" was held at Waterville Valley, NH in 1973, Wayne Wong won it. Other notables from the Waterville Valley area were George Askevold and Floyd Wilkie. I was there. There were no rules, just a panel of three judges giving scores. The cool thing about the scoring was "Extra points given for wicked cool recoveries"
