@@MeliorIlle they 'revamped' the veterancy to emphasize more onto attack instead of defense, which the ai already gets a massive buff due to difficulty, making it harder for the players frontline units to hold them since they get hit a lot more. They may also have increased the buffs the AI gets, not entirely sure. Over all the patch introduced quite a lot detriments for the player like decreaded vision (ai does not seem effected by this at all) and nerfing ports into oblivion (although that seems to be a bug, since it should only had to have an effect on Wulfhard i heard)

I had a battle like this. An impossible battle that I just couldn't see myself winning. On the third attempt, I actually won. I pulled off the most epic victory ever seen. And then the game CTD'd on the post battle screen. I haven't touched WH2 since.

Not quite as epic, but I had a similar 'epic victory' with Khemri that CTD'd when I tried saving the replay. It's a replay problem that, as mentioned above, disappeared when I erased old saves.

Most of the siege maps that I have come across at least have little patches of trees where you can hide your units that you're not using right away, but yeah the sieges in the other games being full 360 around the city make them so much better. Especially when you have 2 stacks facing off against a full garrison/stack, it just gets way too crowded.

Really don't like army loss penalties in vanilla, I like that Steel Faith Overhaul reduces it so your whole army won't just route instantly when you reach a certain threshold, high leadership units can still fight and hold.

Wulfhardts Campaign is the hardest campaign I have ever played on legendary difficulty. It's near impossible to fight against lizardmen that have unified the southlands by turn 100 (last defenders and tlaqua) while hexoatl is also still alive. With the income nerfs its dreadful. 3 whole provinces and barely 2 stacks to defend against 20 deathstacks simultaneously

@@SmashingSnow I'd install the mod that reverses the port income nerf and in hindsight I should have focused more on taking out Hexoatl instead of killing the Vampire Coast for the hunter quests. The greenskins and Order of loremasters were easily killing the lizardmen early-mid game but later they got wrecked by Hexoatl (which confederated with Cult of Sotek) in a matter of a couple of turns Also try not to piss off the dark elves too much since they eventually will take over Ulthuan and then turn their attention to you. When I stopped my campaign the dark elves had already taken many coastal settlements and even the capital of Lothern

It said "You are losing ground" because a enemy unit, the flying one, made it into your square. (I think.) Usually, if you are defending the walls, when a unit makes it to your square it's a sign that you're losing the battle.

Basically same situation happened to me, took Hexoatl and Mazda sent 2 stacks to me including Jurassic Park doomstack. I just pulled my defending army and let them take it, then took it back next turn just by cheesing the siege and shooting carnosaurs through breaches with my hammer of the witches.

Damn, that first fight. The ONLY thing I think that could’ve been done is to manually withdraw the archers once they ran out of ammo to get the gunners in earlier. But, really, you did that battle so damned well. The close defeat was a letdown after that skill level

You could leave the hellstorm rocket batteries at the flanks and leave them and make them go to city center immediately after you start the war. Then you could man the batteries again when they blobbed up. That really would make the battle much easier. Secondly you could place those spearmens a bit closer to the gates and there would be a corridor which cannons could shoot at frontlines. None of the enemy units would try to get past there because its so small. You just let all the spearmen die for no obvious reason.

Oh yeah, I definitely remember this damn gate cheese from the AI... I was thinking the same like you: "hey, the gate is open! Lets go in!" and somehow a few units actually managed to get into it, but then got cut off from the rest of the army and got slaughtered inside. Awesome. Had to reload that shit.

you could press the retreat button when archers ammo finished so the gunners would come earlier. I am not sure it would work though it was a really hard battle.

I was thinking this when he mentioned how his (by then) very low health tank was actually a negative effect on his battle ability because it was preventing his gunners coming in by taking up a unit slot

@@juanxtr3711 Thanks for the explanation. I did see a comment further down from Legend replying to someone else saying it wasn't possible in the situation. I wasn't sure what the situation was though. My assumption was being in a battle with no escape - i.e. all units lost if you lose (city defense or fast march defense for example). So is it the case for all defensive battles?

@@Zone1BC on a regular field battle you can withdraw units even if you are defending. I think its limited to armies on force march and defending sieges, with or without walls, since they get wiped out after a defeat

A little trick that it could have been used, its to put small units around mid battle on the towers so they will keep shooting at the enemies, like Kalara was doing. The continuos and free dmg of the towers shouldn't be understimated :)

It's pretty bad in sieges which are 90% of the campaign battles you're fighting. They're also super expensive.

Yes, be sure to bring karl and his deathclaw to make siege easier. Ambush to lure armies out of their fortress and auto resolve the siege, or bring an extra army with great cannon/witch hunters to break down walls for you

SPOILERS Legend, in previous total wars there was a button that made units retreat from the battlefield, I'm half sure that still exists in warhammer 2, I am just wondering if it would have been useful to make the archers retreat so your reinforcements would come in earlier in that battle, to save the archers and replace them with fresh units earlier loving the video ^^

The only problem I saw with the battle was how you wanted those reinforcements yet you had guys sitting around. That delay I think cost you time to reset your lines. I mean if a spearmen had 2 guys left and was just standing around would of been best to just force retreat them or just send them off to die right away. Yea it was pure chaos and can be hard to micro everything at once. Still that was an impressive fight. I'm learning more and more just by watching your videos.

you can't force retreat if you are the defender, the button is only enabled for the attacker side. If you check the UI, the last button is blank

I personally prefer Halberdiers for my holding force , but spearmen do the job quite well.

They are unique to Wulfhart's campaign. You get 4 heroes that start out with the immortal skill and have unique questlines tied to them. A big part of the campaign is doing those quests. The 4 are a bretonian paladin, a witch hunter, a waystalker and a dwarf engineer.

I never used the gate glitch myself but I don't think its worse than wasting enemy ammunition with a single entity small unit, or having several enemy units run around the map trying to catch just one of yours that is faster

the ai is rushing through the breaches, so the arrow towers won't kill a lot of units, and to maintain them you have to sacrifice several units since lizards in melee are way better specially with the cheats they get in legendary difficulty

You cannot retreat in a battle where the army is wiped out upon defeat (defending cities, engaged while in forced march, underway interception, etc.). The retreat flag icon isn't even on the toolbar. The unit either has to be routed off the battlefield or wiped out. Why they designed it like that is beyond me, given the limitations on strategy the current system creates.
