How to change dead LCD panel CCFL backlight to LED.
This was fixed on a Yamaha PSR-3000 but I have done this many times on several keyboards & other old CCFL and electroluminescent displays. The music played at the end of the video is Yamaha's built in Demo from the Yamaha PSR-3000 keyboard.

Your knowledge on repairs is beyond me, I've been stuck out of Australia for over 2 years due to the covid travel restrictions, finally got my Yamaha psr 660 out of storage and the led display very faded. I thought oh no... watched you video and 5 minutes in I thought I'd never be able to do what you are doing... but you did manage to find a way to fix the issue just after you'd put everything back together - the moment 90% into the video you said adjust the contrast the aha moment hit me! There was the issue with my display, contrast needed to be adjusted with the simple knob at the rear of the keyboard!!!! Thank you. Loved watching the video and you're a genius removing all the boards and creating an led lighting set-up. Thank goodness I didn't attempt all that. Thanks.

Thats great to hear mCKENIC. I have repaired quite a lot of the old 2 line text displays that use the electroluminescent strip under the panel, just one bright LED and a strip of white paper or plastic seems to be enough to scatter the light nicely.

Hey Markus, I'm a new subscriber on the strength of this video. My son is a composer and he really likes using the old M-Audio Keystation 88 keyboards. We have 3 and two of them have their blue backlights dead and the third is on its way. You have shown me how to get them back and even change their color. I'm currently replacing the worn out USB2 socket on one of them so I think I'll dig a little deeper and deal with the display. Thank you so much for leading the way.

Yes the diode trick is cool, never gave that a thought although I should have guessed as they are used as detectors in AM radios lol. I had such a big smile on my face when you turned it on and it lit up for you and looked no different to its original function I guess :D Really glad it turned out good :D I have the reverse problem with an LED backlit PC monitor, I only had it a few months from new and the backlight has stopped working completely. I am still looking for a fix as I dont want to damage the screen if I go inside it. The monitor is passed it's warranty. I also want to retrofit LED to my old Iiyama 1024x768 monitor which is CCFL but still works though the colour has turned a warm sunset when in use. That monitor is years old lol but I still use it with a Socket A PC that has all my music software and keyboard drivers on it, also my midi files are on there and I havent switched it on in a few years as I want to clone the drives before anything happens to them.. Just havent got round to it lol Thanks for a great tutorial :D

I've watched many of your videos and especially enjoy the "keyboard that's ok apart from one thing that renders it unusable" fixes. In all of those I've not been too concerned about getting it apart and then back together again. This one however gave me the heebie heebie with that display buried away in there and all those connectors! Glad you met with such success. Please tell us why lowering voltage with resistors is not best practice. I mean if the 12v comes off a regulator, dropping it with resistors would be stable enough? Or is there more to it? Love your work.😀
@ZElTGElST
@ZElTGElST 5 жыл бұрын
To lower it you need to do a voltage divider, which could dissipate too much power and maybe even break the main power regulator. Well, in the practice you could do that and get the thing working but using another regulator is way more elegant. Anyway I would love Markus to confirm that

Great job! Best way to fix is to improve at the same time. Not sure why you need the caps if you are starting with 12VDC off of another regulator, not off a bridge from an AC source. One would assume the internal 12VDC buss is pretty smooth to begin with.
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right the 12 volt source will be pretty smooth already but I guess Im so use to using these with caps that I just went ahead and included them as a matter of usual practice.

A very nice job well done. For that purpose you can purchase LED stripes on AliExpress "LED stripes for monitor backlight" for just a few quid. The ones I bought were 7 EUR and since they are meant to fit a 17" monitor I still have the cut pieces laying around. The displays I resurrect are not in as good shape as that Yamaha one. The plastic around the CCFL is usually degraded to flakes and totally gone. And since the liquid crystal in the display is also going I am faced with a total replacement and FPGA bases converters....Dunno if I want to spend that time.
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 5 жыл бұрын
I too have many metres of the led strip, It’s so useful for many jobs, I’m pleased this was an easy fix (apart from the time it took)
@ChipGuy
@ChipGuy 5 жыл бұрын
@@markusfuller Oh I should have mentioned that those AliExpress LED light stripes are very narrow, like half the width of the reel type. Just a bit wider than the CCFL. So cutting them would not be necessary. However that was a very good idea and I didn't know that the layout makes that even possible. Looking forward to your next car boot sale item :)

@@markusfuller This is one of the best mid-range arrangers that Yamaha made. The sound quality was wonderful and also the build quality and buttons. Now they come with squishy rubber buttons, but the PSR3000 has hard plastic ones which were very responsive. My keyboard had the same backlight issue and i got it fixed. Not sure what they did to fix it, but I could see it dimming out again so I had to sell it off quickly. If only I had found this video earlier. A majority of PSR3000 keyboards have had display issues. I guess the display was the weak link in this model. Thanks for the great fix and for sharing it here. That is shocking Mark with all the good work you do also promoting Yamaha in your video. I cant imagine Yamaha putting a track on their synth without having paid a license for the track in the first place. It is always the management and not the artist that goes after copyright. Unfortunately youtube Algorithm is dumb I have published music on routenote and uploaded the same track onto youtube only to get a copyright strike on my own music from youtube. So i got them told and white walled my music so i cant get any mor copyright strikes. But i dont put music on youtube now anyway as streaming is giving music away for free. Like Gary newman complained one song streamed 1 million times made him £37

Sweet! And about your diode "signal tracer", would it detect low current signals as well? I was given a Novation Xio synth that is defective, it doesn't load the OS, can't be detected by a PC's USB bus so I am thinking about finding where the problem is through signal tracing. I only have the schematics to help.

Hi there are special signal probes for oscilloscopes that have signal amplifiers built in but they are very expensive. but to be honest if your scope can go to very low signals i guess it could be possible to do the diode trick though i have normally only done this when sniffing for signals in high current signals. i must try it out and see how low i can go.

Hello Markusfuller, I have a Roland G 1000 and it is developing a problem with the LCD display in that the colour is fading from blue to a yellow brown and can hardly read it, it is strange that if I lean back I can see that the writing looks normal but leaning forward when I want to edit it looks pale I can hardly make it out, maybe it is only the light or something more serious, upon looking around to try to find a part for it I stumbled on your site, you know so much about the keyboards and you said you have a lot of them around I thought I would trouble you for some advice or you may have a part very willing to pay of course, as I can't a find a part anywhere and I am feeling sad that if the light goes out that's it, otherwise the keyboard is in great condition as I have looked after it with service etc. I am wondering if you can help as to whether you may stumble on a part for the Roland G1000 or if there is a generic or if another model can act as replacement, I also contacted Roland Corp with bad news as to a replacement, your help would be greatly appreciated hoping my request is not too much trouble await your reply Kind regards Noeline
