I know this was done several years ago but I am considering getting one. So thanks for your comments. I have generally used paragraph form Bibles and preached for decades using a Thinline NIV. (Many in my area have lost confidence in the NIV.) So I often use the ESV or NKJV.

Brother, I would love to see and hear preaching without verse numbers on the page. Remember when we were asked to bring our Pilgrim’s Progress books to Sunday evening service? Not everyone had the same pages because of the different editions (versions?). Some even had modern versions with updated language (oh my, this sounds real familiar beyond remembering the service, hmmm). We were all able to find the part that the pastor wanted to point out. There’s no reason that your idea can’t work. Before chapter and verses (15XX?), I’m not sure how many in the congregation would have had a copy of the Bible in their laps. Maybe those in the church to whom you preach in that way will be the first congregation and generation to have that kind of experience. If it can be proven that it can work, then maybe we will see more companies putting more translations into readers’ versions. I had a funny thought for that style of preaching. It involves everyone needing the exact same model of the Bible that the preacher in the pulpit uses. The preachers who love their 1917 Old Schofield Bible had their famous line after they called a reference for the congregations to turn - “…page 473 if you have the right (or the right kind of) Bible.”l There’s your first joke in your first sermon of preaching that way. Love the review. You stated your preference while still showing strengths and weaknesses. I love paragraph versions that are single column for just reading to do the flyby and seeing the eagle eye view. I do like verse by verse when dissecting the verses and getting into word meanings and deeper exegetical study. It is wild how format can have such an impact on how we perceive text.

That is a very good looking Bible. I too believe that paragraph settings are better. I get many people like verse by verse and that is okay. My first Bible was verse by verse, it was KJV after all. Then I started to reading the the NKJV, and now I'm not so into verse by verse anymore. Whether double column or single, I still believe paragraphs are better for exegesis. I'm getting in to the ESV translation as well and hoping to get one as my go to Bible. I've been reading through it on my android device and thus far I've fallen for it. It's just such wonderful translation and it has excellent footnotes to go with it.

Mark, have you turned your mic volume down recently? The volume seems quieter now, as I had to turn my PC volume to 100 on this video to understand. A sound measurement app I have had this video at 39dB, but, for example, one from December (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHXZfJ9sl9mAi7M) at 51dB. (My declining hearing may also be involved, though.)

Is the ESV your favorite translation? Most people I know prefer the ESV. I tend to read NKJV, KJV, and CSB in that order. Good video. God bless..... Never mind. All I had to do was keep watching to get my answer. I will leave my comment, as to hopefully help your channel.

That sounds like a solid printing/binding of the Bible. I've been eyeing the possibility of investing into a "premium" Bible. It's nice to hear your attention to detail in analyzing this Bible, especially with your thoughts on typography/formatting. However, it would have been nice to see more of it and less of only you. Rather than have the camera at you, and being forced to hold the Bible up, perhaps next time you should slide the camera back, or add in shots of other angles, to better highlight the Bible itself. I must know...how does one get given Bibles like this? That sounds like a really nice gig!

I think we're both 'on the same page' as far as the 'layout' of bibles are concerned. I was one that was born-and-raised on KJV and surprisingly taught of the "pilcrow" in my KJV at that younger age in church, and that it meant a new paragraph. But. yes, very few people are aware of it. I think "wow!" at the thought of a bible with no verse markings; fine for myself personally. It would be a good way to test how well I know the 'where-abouts' for what I'm looking for. The real value in verse markings is that it certainly speeds things up in study and arranging for a topical talk/sermon. Not to mention when you have a congregation of 150 and you invite them to turn to the book of XXX, chapter X:X. Can you imagine saying something like; "Ok, let's open our bibles to the part of the bible where the Apostle Paul speaks of his being in the third paradise....." .. then waiting for them to find it? It kind of even makes me smile/laugh even as I type this. If there really is an unmarked bible like that around, I would be interested just for checking it out and (depending on the translation) using it as one to read cover to cover. Nice review. Don't hold back simply because other KZbinrs are doing it!

@@markwardonwords One "problem" (not for me though) is when you're one for introducing the bible to the average person that typically doesn't read the bible. A readers' bible doesn't 'look' like a bible - at least a traditional two-column one. At that people are hesitant, or at least distracted when you want to be fixed on a specific topic. The average "newbee" kind of expects a bible to at least look like one. I remember a time where; if it didn't have a black cover, it wasn't a bible!! Fortunately, now with e-bibles, the average person doesn't have any prior expectations. I think they all basically are one column and in paragraphs. Maybe if there was an option to "turn off" the chapter and verse numbers.... Anyone know of anybody connected with e-bible programming? ;) Ray

@@19king14 Logos Bible Software has all those settings, allowing paragraph, verse by verse, including or not including reference numbers, and more. It's awesome. That's an interesting thought about a reader's Bibles not looking like a Bible. However, many publishers have been doing "single column" Bibles with verses arranged in paragraphs, not line by line. I think that's a happy medium that maintains some of the "Bible" feel, but adds much of the readability of actually decent formatting. I'm not sure your preferences, but sadly, there are very few KJV Bibles in single column, paragraph format. It's much more common with other translations.

@@PritchardStudios "Logos Bible Software has all those settings..." That's good to know.. I haven't invested in Logos software. I have downloaded a couple of free ones, but I still fall back on my paper/ink library. 64 years old and have collected quite a library over the decades that I use which has become second nature to me. I did invest in a Samsung I-pad and started transferring my many notes into it. But the battery swelled up and ruined everything causing all of my hours and time to be nothing but loss (except for the fact I got to review and refresh my memory on much of my notes from the past). Since then I decided I'm simply going to continue with books that can last even hundreds of years (as a small collection of them already have!)! I have read through the New Jerusalem bible in single column form. Byington's Bible in Living English is another single column bible I have plans for reading through. Strange, I've done enough bible reading that I can basically tune out the chapter/verse numbers mentally as I read. They certainly don't get in the way. I'm retiring in a few months, kids are grown. Now it's more time for me, my biblical library, preaching and God....

Nice I live in WA state too. I like verse by verse but they seem to have fallen out of popularity. And this one seems like a really nice Bible. I have to admit I feel guilty at the thought of buying high end Bible though... but I’m thinking about it!

Yeah, I agree. I have kept just one really nice Bible, itself a gift to me as I left South Carolina to come to Washington. As far as I’m concerned, it will remain my preaching Bible till I die. I did ask my good friend Randy Brown if he had any extra copies of the King James lying around that I could use me for my videos. He sent me a good one. I guess that means I have two nice Bibles.

Believers need to be reminded that the Epistles are letters, hence epistles. They do not need to be taught verse by verse, they need to be read and discussed concerning content and in context, bringing in other scriptures where they are needed for support when necessary. Remember, it wasn't until the 16th century when we find chapters and verses by the Greek text of Stephanus. The Epistles for example, were read to congregations in all caps when they would be sent them. Paul says in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians that they were not writing them anything they could not read or understand. It is easier for believers (they are born again) to read and understand the plain text and context, especially if not coerced to believe what is not actually in the text, more and more as they grow Spiritually. If one has a good translation in one's own language one that may include strictly factual footnotes, one will be comfortable studying through it. The same would apply to one preaching, some bibles have too much on the pages that makes for too much distraction. Seminaries and Preachers/Elders/Pastors are making God's breathed words, seemingly more complicated to study often times by the average believer and more and more have difficulty believing that they can ever really understand the scriptures on their own. One must gain a fuller overall knowledge of God's word while carefully handling or dividing it and the understanding will come by some "good and consistent instruction", which is all over the place these days, including and beginning with, how one is saved. A bible needs text that doesn't mix in too much non text so that the text is immediately recognized on the page, whether Old Testament or New. Believers also need to be able to use their Bible as a book that they can write notations in.

I have a wide margin KJV two-column Bible, which I only now, while Mark was talking, realized is a verse-by-verse edition, and I know it's fine for me, especially for study notes. What paragraphing does is insert the translator's interpretation into the text, creating his own version of the *context*, whereas verses equally distributed allow the reader to derive the division from the text itself, thus being able to 'rightly divide the word of truth' as Paul told Timothy. Case in point: where does your version put Gal. 6:6? Is in the same paragraph with verse 7? My NIV puts v.6 and v.7 in different paragraphs. I don't think so! Verse 6 provides context to the truth about sowing and reaping: the context being sharing good things with the instructor who teaches you, versus sowing into the flesh. My ESV, by the way, rightly divides this passage, starting a paragraph with verse 6. Check it out in your Bible!
