I've lightened up on Vince Russo for one reason. I have a Star Trek group on Facebook, and I was doing this "what if Vince Russo wrote Star Trek" thing, where Russo wrote the worst episodes of Star Trek. I think Vince Russo was fine as long as he had someone around to tell that “Wow, that’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard in my life!” It was when he had full creative control that he was at his worst, and his work in TNA and WCW demonstrated that. Russo was only good when McMahon was there to control him. His call on gimmicking Owen Hart’s harness release led to Owen’s death. The fact that Russo never caught a manslaughter charge is crazy.
@Foxo-Matti12
@Foxo-Matti12 3 жыл бұрын
"The whole idea just started so innocently. We had brought back Owen’s old gimmick, The Blue Blazer. He was meant to be like a superhero, but a spoof on a superhero - to really get over the comedic genius of Owen Hart. It was probably the Friday before the show. The show’s already written - I get a call from Steve Taylor [WWF’s V.P of Operations]. He goes, ‘Look, I just got a call from the people who rappelled Sting from the rafters [in rival WCW]. They said they’re gonna be at our pay-per-view. They wanna know if there is anything they may be able to do for the WWE.’ So while he’s telling me this, I’m looking through the show, and I see Owen. And I’m saying, ‘Well, that’d really elevate Owen’s character, that’d be something really special and cool for Owen. What if we rappelled The Blue Blazer?’ -.... "So now during the day [of the pay-per-view], Owen Hart comes up to me, and what he said was, ‘I rehearsed rappelling from the ceiling, but when I rappel down, it takes me a while to get my harness off. If [Owen’s opponent] The Godfather is in the ring first, and then I rappel, and I gotta take this harness off, The Godfather could pummel me…’ See, everyone [at that time] was thinking, ‘Real, real, real, reality,’ so he said, ‘Could my entrance come first, THEN have The Godfather come out?’ I said, ‘Owen, no problem - I’ll make the changes, no problem…’ And that was it. That was the extent of our conversation." - Vince Russo

I've honestly heard so many conflicting stories on this that I genuinely don't know what to think. I've heard several people both in WWF at the time and some who weren't in the WWF but we're close to Owen say it was Owen's idea because Godfather was coming out first and the harness took so long to get off it would get awkward if Godfather didn't jump him. I've heard others say it was Vince Russo's idea so he could quickly unhook then do a prat fall. I can see both, they weren't treating Owen seriously at all at the time so having him fall flat on his face for shits and giggles seems right up WWF's ally. On the other hand, I've heard some insiders talk about the blue blazer being a stopgap gimmick that was only gonna last another month before Owen would drop it and cut a work/shoot promo about how he was being constantly mistreated and since he been in the company he was in his brother's shadow. This would've led to a huge push. This also makes sense given how much they like mixing real life into the story at the time and I can see Owen getting a big push because he had alot of people who liked him booking at the time plus he was very well liked backstage, more than even Bret, and thus it is unlikely he would've been victim to backstage politics.

WWE are ultimately responsible for Owen's death. Why do you think they paid the Hart family a whooping $18 million in compensation after he died in an out-of-court settlement? They knew they were totally in the wrong and had no choice but to pay up. McMahon bares far more responsibility than Russo, especially for the unthinkable call to continue the Over the Edge PPV after Owen's death. It really should have been the end of the WWF full stop.

Or saying Tony Schiavone looked like a cokehead! TNA basically stood for Trashy Nasty Asses. Sad stuff, but hilarious! This faction made the latter days of the NWO look hardcore awesome! And Jeff Jarrett basically acting like a Budget Store John Cena. Oh, God, and I just died watching this again and hearing your Jeff Hardy impression! Classic! I never get tired of hearing about Jeff's stoner friends. No Shoving this one! A+ all the way!

My thoughts on Vince Russo are..... meh. While he did have more bad ideas than good, I respect him for at least trying something new and always wanting to give everyone on the card something to do, especially the younger guys. I think the hate for him in recent years were because "it was the cool thing to do" and everyone did it without looking into his ideas with an open mind. I honestly think his S.E.X. faction was okay at best. Sure, it started the never-ending trend of TNA doing "faction warfare/takeover" storylines for the next 10 years (Planet Jarrett, World Elite, Main Event Mafia, Aces and Eights, the GFW Invasion etc.), but at the time, I thought was cool seeing S.E.X. members like Triple X, Sonny Siaki and AJ Styles getting pushes in the company's early years.

Say what you want about Vince Russo, but the Sports Entertainment Extreme faction was ahead of its time. 2 separate fanbases in the wrestling community argue constantly about what pro wrestling should be based off on, and what better way then Old School Wrestling Tradition (NWA) vs Story base driven concepts with elements of Crash T.V. (S.E.X.). People have their own opinions on Vince, but for me, he understood the importance of ratings and what causal fans wanted to see.

@@Abyss_Wanderer4816 I'd take a Bischoff booked show over one by Cornette, Russo, or McMahon for that matter. WCW from 96-99 got the balance right between new reality based stuff with the nWo while maintaining a very high standard when it came to the quality of wrestling and the commitment to their JCP/NWA past. Meanwhile, WCW were also heavily featuring cruiserweights, shining the spotlight on in-ring action in a way that had never been done before.

Yeah DDP was coming back from injury hanging out with Kevin Nash and the natural born thrillers. He told Nash and Sanders he has a new catch phrase that's going to be huge. He would tell his opponent they are SOL then hit the diamond cutter. The next night Mike Sanders suggested they take DDP's new catchphrase and use it as a rib. As they walked backstage DDP was there all he said was it was going be huge but it belongs to you guys now.
