To put Funks age into perspective, when Wyatt was born, Terry was older than Bray Wyatt in 1987 (43) than Bray Wyatt was when he died(36). At least Terry lived a long fruitful life.

I became a fan in 03, but i always loved watching the late 90s run of Funk, especially on Foley's greatest hits and misses. Loved him at the final one night stand as well. Then as i got older and seeing his pre ECW work, Terry was amazing. His body of work in Memphis with Lawler is still some of my favourite pro wrestling.

Fact: Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn wanted Terry to come out as Chainsaw Charlie. Jim Cornett told them, that's not going to work cause the fans know Terry's walk and mannerisms. Vince was like, No they won't. Welp, the crowd went wild, chanting Terry and not Charlie.
@BainesMkII
@BainesMkII Жыл бұрын
Vince Russo has said that the Chainsaw Charlie gimmick was created due to Cornette annoying McMahon. Cornette had kept pushing a lame Gobbledy Gooker-style "who/what is in this mysterious box" story, annoying McMahon. Since Cornette had also pushed for the WWE to hire Terry Funk, McMahon decided to stick Funk in the box, and created the Chainsaw Charlie gimmick.
@jonathancampbell5231
@jonathancampbell5231 Жыл бұрын
In Terry Funk's own book, he said the Chainsaw Charlie gimmick was his own idea. Bruce Pritchard came to him shortly before his debut, and asked him if he needed anything, and Terry blurted out- for reasons unknown even to Funk himself- that he wanted a chainsaw and to be called Chainsaw Charlie, and he also requested the pantyhose headgear. It wasn't his idea to come out of the box, but everything else was his.
@pikkon899
@pikkon899 Жыл бұрын
Your "fun fact" is incorrect as Terry Funk admitted openly in his book that Chainsaw Charlie was his idea - not Vince or Dunn or Russo. If you didn't like Chainsaw Charlie, blame Funk but no one wants to do that and no one will ever do that......
@BainesMkII
@BainesMkII Жыл бұрын
@@pikkon899 Not sure who you are calling incorrect. The first commenter was giving a version of Jim Cornette's account; Cornette's account does not actually contradict Funk's version; it was about whether fans would recognize Funk. My comment gave Vince Russo's account, which was contradicted by Funk's claim for the gimmick, but not necessarily the box. (And I never called mine a "fun fact", because Russo is a somewhat unreliable source.) After learning that Funk claimed to be the origin of the gimmick, Cornette has suggested that Funk was trying to head off Vince sticking him with an even worse gimmick. Cornette went on to tell the story of Funk previously ditching out of a terrible Vince McMahon idea. Cornette originally blamed Russo, which may be why Russo told a version that put blame towards Cornette. Russo may have believed his own version, not realizing that Funk had already given the Chainsaw Charlie suggestion to Vince, instead believing Vince came up with the whole thing on the spot.

@@arostwocents No, they went downhill after Vince's yes-men chased out all the people who threatened their jobs. Vince Russo came back for a brief stint in 2002, at McMahon's discretion, and almost right away, it was the writing room that demanded Russo be fired. Russo or someone like him (Pat Patterson, for the Hogan era) could do what Stephanie and weenies like Prichard never could: stand up to McMahon, look him in the face, and tell him he was wrong about something.

RIP Terry Funk, the man is the literal definition of a legend and had such an amazing and interesting life, one that most people can dream about. Usually when someone so well-liked and cherished as him passes away, you always think that their life was caught too short and wish they lived longer, but in his case, it's actually amazing he lived as long as he did and was able to do what he loved for so very long, especially knowing the rough life he led and everything he's done, and how short wrestlers lives can be, especially from previous era(s), and did not have to suffer and/or waste away like so many ex-wrestlers do. I can't imagine he'd ever want to live like that. He definitely made his mark in this world and will always be fondly remembered and looked up to!
