Just an FYI. Jack is an interpreter, not a translator. An interpreter executes voice to sign or sign to voice interpretation. A translator is someone who translate the written word. Also, terp is a common shortened name for an interpreter.

Here's the thing Marlee Matlin doesn't see herself as a woman with a disability she sees herself as a normal person she has said that she can do anything except hear even though she might feel sad some days I don't think she would never change the way she is she seems like a very happy and energetic person she is happily married and has four beautiful children I have a disability as well and I admire her so much because her personality and my personality are the same and we think just alike even though times are hard I wouldn't change my life for anything in this world I believe in God and when you believe in God everything becomes so much easier

@kurlyTAC 4. When this aired, a lot of people complained that it was rude to hide jack. 5. When Marlee Matlin was on Ellen earlier this year, Jack sat next to her on the couch and was introduced by name. 6. Marlee Matlin will tell people to talk to her, not Jack. I've seen her do it.

Thanks for the compliment, but to answer your question; No, I don't know what station the show is airred in, but I do no that the show is still ongoing since its release in 2004. And to correct any misinformation; Marlee isn't part of the MAIN cast, but she was rather popular as a mute character on the show, JODI! ^_^
@charmedgirl9013 жыл бұрын
@Emorkia I Know! I know it could probably be awkward figuring out etiquette but most other interviewers dont mind having him sit in. The best interview I ever saw with her was on comedy central where Jack was actually included in the interview and there was a lot of joking around. It was so laid back and chaotic that at points Marlee would talk directly to the interviewer instead of waiting for Jack. It added a really nice element to it.
@piercedapparition12 жыл бұрын
Jack was not introduced because she wants to fit in with the speaking world in interviews and he should not have to be in the spotlight. It was not necessary. She does give him credit when she can. He was crucial on the Apprentice and was recognized. I love both of them! The fact that she found someone she trusts and to vocalize for her is great! Love her!!

No, that is Jack, her interpreter. He is her "voice" when doing interviews and such in the hearing community. Marlee knows the oral method, where she speaks and lipreads, but some hearing people find her hard to understand so Jack helps bridge the gap in communication. Very common in the ASL/Hearing world
@solveigrose147511 жыл бұрын
Actually in an other interview she said she could feel the vibrations, but she didn't use them. She said she just memorized the moves and the rhythms of the moves.

@kurlyTAC 1. This is hardly a typical intepretaer/client relationship 2. I have a playslist of Marlee Matlin's interviews. Jack is on camera in almost every single one. They introduce him by name or at least mention him in almost every single one. 3. When Marlee Matline was on Celebrity Apprentice earlier this year, they actually took time to introduce Jack during the first episode.

Believe it or not but many things starring Marlee are not subtitled or close captioned, what's worse is trying to watch a whole movie starring her and she's signing away and there's no subtitles and you're thinking, but I bought this movie specifically because she's in it, and you love her acting and there aren't that many good movies with Deaf people signing in them and when you do there's no subtitles in it but you'd assume that there would be so who didn't format the DVD properly? Happened to me last year, one of the movies she's been in had no subtitles, I would assume she'd have it written into her contracts that all DVDs released of movies that she's in should be subtitled and close captioned, preferably with audio description for the visually impaired too, after all, one shouldn't discriminate against other disability groups.

"Deaf" doesn't usually mean a 100% lack of any hearing at all. Most of my deaf friends can hear a little bit, often only of a specific range of frequencies, and some can even understand speech under special conditions, such as when there is no background noise at all. It's not a black-and-white thing.
@irishgerman22214 жыл бұрын
marlee's interpreter... i'm pretty sure his name is Jack... he's amazing. he knows her so well and can voice out such great inflection and personality of marlee's words. i'm an interpreter in training and i hope i can be just an eighth of the interpreter he is... WOW

Marlee and Jack have known each other for 20+ years now. He has become her voice 2 the hearing community. (If u look at other interviews with her its insane how synced they are!) I think she introduces him b/c of their long time relationship and b/c she has nothing but respect 4 him as an terp and friend. If u don't want attention as a terp say so that is ur preference. If a Deaf person wants 2 introduce u that means they respect u and consider you part of the Deaf community
@cattrac702215 жыл бұрын

@LesciK12 He's not. You need to remember a large part of signing is in the face and not the hands, so many words are just implied or weaved in to what is signed. It's a beautifully complex language.
@Knightimehero13 жыл бұрын
@BooDeaf thank you for clarifying that! I think it is so mean when people think the terp should be ignored... they're a PERSON! how can you not introduce them. People who aren't familiar with Deaf culture and sign are curious and should be informed. :)

Geckii Her voice sounds off because she can't hear her own voice. Plus in Deaf Culture its always the preference to use sign. Plus some Deaf People can read lips but usually only at 30%. So she needs an interpreter to understand what they are saying.
@BooDeaf13 жыл бұрын
@203wee...... I know Jack's there because that's his job... to voice over what Marlee says. Same as he is signing to Marlee what Ellen and the other dancer are saying..... I know Jack's talking because he's voicing over what Marlee is signing! I don't need to "hear" him to know he's there; and if it's not "Jack", it's another interpreter, who is there voicing over her signs and signing the hearing peoples' voices! That's how I know.
@JLexine1313 жыл бұрын
@BenASL you're completely right. Once you know a Deaf person well and interpret for them often, you learn what words they prefer and how their mannerisms play into what they are saying. If interpreters did not do this they actually would be giving a very flawed and impersonal voice interpretation.

@LesciK12 You misunderstand. I said implied, but what I meant is that its part of the language itself. Along with the fact that he thoroughly knows ASL and the grammatical detail that's included in the face, he also knows Marlee better than any other Deaf person (I'd bet). He knows her typical words, her way of structuring sentences, everything. I wouldn't doubt any experienced Deaf person or interpreter would tell you that his interpretation (translation) is flawless.
@AhuLanguage12 жыл бұрын
Interpreter* Translators deal with written or recorded, static text ... interpreters work on the fly in real time. They're different jobs. Also, what does the gender matter? The point is that everyone understands each other. Maybe you think it's weird to see her and hear a male voice, but maybe you also think it's weird that she's flapping her hands around too. It's not her voice, it's her interpreter's ... and if it were a female interpreter, that wouldn't be her voice either.
@crisguia11 жыл бұрын
It seems to me that you and many others who reacted negatively to my comment are the ignorant ones. You clearly didn't get that I was asking only if a CI would help someone like her who's about my age to hear well enough. It was an innocent question that wasn't intended to be negative about her condition. I am deaf in my right ear, which is why I asked about the CI for someone losing her hearing. You're all such mean people.
